    I must warn about materials that you should NOT put to the laser: vinyl and PVC. They release hydrogen chloride gas which, combined with the air humidity, generates hydrochloric acid, and that's not good both for the machine and the operators.

    Laser etch a "celtic" pattern into the border of a window, but the "celtic" pattern doesn't repeat and is actually a maze.
    Edit. Then put this window where the sun will catch it, and project your maze onto the floor or opposite wall.

    I recommend a paper transfer tape that you would use for vinyl transfer instead of blue painter's tape. It's thinner and easier to remove. Sometimes, depending on settings, blue painter's tape melts into the engraving and doesn't come out.

  • @ropeany1

    There are a lot of things you can do with one of these. One thing that is fun is to engrave a design onto a piece of cast ( not extruded) acrylic and then 3D print a box to mount it in on one edge. Inside the box put a strip of LEDs so they shine up through the edge of the acrylic and it will only show where the etching has taken place. Makes it so your design is floating in the middle of the piece of acrylic. For added fun get a set of color changing LEDs and have it slowly go through the colors as it sits on the shelf.

  • @prashanthan4
    @prashanthan4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Great video, I look forward to more from you two!
    Fun materials to engrave include: Cork, Acrylic, Glass, Card, any material with coloured layers so you can remove parts of one colour by engraving it away. Fun but stinky things: Leather, Foam, Felt, Neoprene, Bacon!
    Personally I never use the tape as it's a pain to get off and inconsistencies in the tape means the laser power that gets to your material may differ. If I use wood, I lightly sand the surface to remove any residue and there won't be residue from engraving metals. Plastics may need a different kind of cleaner if you don't want to scratch them up by sanding.
    Happy laser cutting and engraving!

    I think I remember reading somewhere that you could use a laser to engrave rubber and make a stamp, would love to see you 2 give it a try!

    • @nzlemming
      @nzlemming 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that would smell really bad (and possibly be poisonous). I'd engrave wood or glass at the deepest setting, then use that as a mold for silicone to make the stamp. That way, you could make plenty of stamps with only one laser session. That said, engraving isn't very deep so it might be better to use NPH's 3D printer to make the negative mold for pouring silicone into.

    And old trick I learned when I was a kid (Navy brat so learned to move/clean up from moves) is to get firm (not rock hard) to use an art gum eraser and it will take the stickum off and since it is a GUM eraser (no abrasive) it will not harm wood finish (if you do NOT go crazy with the pressure).

    1) Try doing a custom engraved/cut card with message and image.
    2) Show how how the laser can cut materials to create a 3D box with finger or dovetail joints.
    3) Deep engrave one wood material, clean burn out, cut inlay from another material and install and finish.

  • @kirknelson156

    I've seen people do some awesome stuff with ceramic tiles, depending on what you want you can paint them and do a reverse image that burns off the paint leaving the white underneath, one guy used 2 layers of paint, and was able to burn off just the top layer which was black, and then more power to burn off the second layer which was a green, leaving it with a very cool tri-color image. that unit might be powerful enough to actually etch a white tile on its own.

    Etch a family photo on plexyglass (cast acrylic sheet not rolled) and put it on A lighted base. This will make the etching glow. The reason for using cast sheet is to prevent cracking or shattering during the etch and cut phase, rolled sheet has stresses locked into the crystalline structure of the polymer that can release during cuts/etching.

    Mirrors are cool to do. Had a friend in the mid 80's that chemical etched mirrors, then would put colored film on the back of the mirror surface. He would light the back of the mirror. You can use runes and Keltic patterns to make magical mirrors. You can use different colors for different runes ect. (Added) You can chemical etch the glass after cleaning the laser passed glass. This will rough up the surface of the glass, it will diffuse the light better and give the pattern a glowing look to it. Use a test piece of mirror to check and see if the etching chemical will remove or blur the mirror backing edges. Have fun with your new toy!

    The thing I did recently was I laser a path around some lettering on acrylic that was enough to score the protective paper/plastic and then I peeled that off. Then I airbrushed the lettering that I had removed because the rest of the surface was effectively masked off. I gave it primer, paint and a protective acrylic coat then removed the rest of the protective cover. I was able to get super fine detail that I would not have been able to with something like vinyl lettering

    NPH should now try 3D printing MrBaddeley Printed Droids (Star Wars Astromechs and mini droids) for his kiddos! They make real fun projects for kids (and adults) to learn electronics, programming, modeling, and more....

    Engrave the game behind you, the chips that are red and black. It should do plastic, do the front and back. Can do your logo or engrave your family names or a mix logo one side, family on other side. You can laser cut out a jig of holes that is sized for the chips. Than you just drop the chips in the holes, you can do this with canning lids also. Suggest that the spacing be about 3/4 to 1 inch between the holes that way the wood will not break up and you can reuse it again.

    I so want a lasercutter. But I simply don’t have the space at this time. I used to rent an office space, for my (V)FX but work was drying up and then covid hit, and it was just plain cost. So I canceled the rent. But I’m already stuffed in my appartement with my electronics and FX makeup and 3D printer stuff. So I hope soon (V)FX will pickup again and I’ll restart my productie company. For now, I’m just focussen in my IT company. Easy during lockdowns :)

    You can also spray paint it before you remove the tape. The laser makes a perfect stencil for that.

    I’ve been a fan you’ve been the Doogie!
    You could cut tags for your products at the farm that double as souvenirs. You could change them from year to year or season to season or go really crazy… month to month. 😉love ya bud

    Hey Joel! Hey Neil! Awesome collaboration! There are so many things you can use. There are some that can be a danger like a few have commented like PVC, vinyl, etc...Maybe come up with the most requested list on the video, twitter or instagram. The real question is how would you benefit with the Glowforge by making your own creations for whatever projects you haves coming up.
