    We saw MWH earlier this year. They still know how to make a crowd feel good. Respect!

    I'd never heard this song until a year or two ago, and have played the video dozens of times. The happiest song in the universe, as someone else wrote. Appreciate this video with Ivan.

    My older sibling was about 15 when Safety Dance was released. I was about 14 when Pop Goes the World was released. When we discovered we both had the same plan to buy the album, we decided to go halves on it. One of the rare times our sibling rivalry was not in play. :) Oh, and I have the album in my collection now.

    On Tuesday. A genius song. One of the most important songs for me in the 80s.

    This song NEVER gets old. It's timeless in some way. I remember where I was when I heard it the first time, and said to myself, "Oh man, is this Men Without Hats?" I was a big fan of the Rhythm of Youth album, (Safety Dance). What makes the song, other than the melody, is the effect on Ivan's voice done in the studio. No offence to Ivan but that effect enhanced his voice big time. I wish the POP Goes the World album was done using it...great interview! I wish it were longer! Thanks for posting.

    Most people just thought in the UK that they were a one hit wonder (Safety Dance), but there was so much more to MWH but they didn't get much airplay which was a great shame.....one of my favourite bands of the 80s. This was the same for Alphaville, another great band.

      They had a huge number of very good tunes and the 2012 CD is very good as well. Very much hard edged and concise,

    This song became a football anthem in Argentina, even today is sung by the football fans on the football matches with different adapted lyrics each time....

    A whole album's worth of MWH material between Folk of the 80s Part III and Pop Goes the World, just thrown out? I would love love love to hear that... or to have heard it back in the day

      "Heaven" is certainly one of those. Look it up on youtube. They played both that and Pop when I saw them on their Freeways tour.

    Cool story, love Gentle Giant. And "Pop Goes the World". There was a rumor I heard as a kid that the video was filmed at McDonald Cartier High School - any truth to that??

    Another excellent episode!! Love his humbleness here regarding putting his own opinions aside and following his mentor's advice. Very inspirational indeed.

    FUN FACT: Did you know that the main riff of this song is one of the most popular singed among football (soccer) fans in Argentina? They sing the riff and name their team, so it can be use for every single soccer team in Argentina. For example: th-cam.com/video/AZ_miGbD4hs/w-d-xo.html

    Pop goes the world....was used by Tide and they got a fortune in revenues for it...they then created a new album and went on tour. Most of his songs were really edgy and meant a lot to me....Too bad too many drugs killed his career as he could have easily been Canada's best Band ever and an international success. AS they had Where do the Boys go, Hey Men, Safety Dance and many songs that made you think.....God Bless Ivan.

  • @DungeonStudio
    @DungeonStudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ohhh Ivan, you let me down! You were so BRILLIANT on your first releases musically and lyrically! And nothing against Pop Goes The World, but seemed like a overwrought trippy concept album for poops & giggles. And then you guys slid into the whole 'rock' thing, which I thought was gutsy - but really lacking the ballsy substance you had early on. So you were just following the guidance of a mediocre prog rocker all along since that point...? (And I'll get stink for saying Gentle Giant is 'mediocre' no doubt! LOL)
