Charles Ludwig - A Whitechapel Murders Suspect 1888.

  • On September 18th, 1888, a one armed unfortunate by the name of Elizabeth Burns, went with a man into a dark court in Minories, on the eastern fringe of the City of London. Standing in the darkness, she was horrified when she noticed that he was holding a knife.
Her screams brought police officer, John Johnson to the scene, where he sent the man on his way. When the woman later mentioned that the man had frightened her with the knife, Johnson carried out a quick search form the man, but to no avail.
Realising that he may have let the Whitechapel murderer slip through his fingers, Johnson continued on his way, and told other constables he met to be on the lookout for the man.
The man had, in fact, gone to a coffee stall, where he pulled the knife out on another man, and was duly arrested. It transpired that his name was Charles Ludwig, also known as Wetzel, and, later that day, he appeared at the Thames Police Court.
In this video, we take a look at the events of that day, and then follow his story in the Victorian newspapers, as the police and press began looking into the possibility that he may also have been the Whitechapel murderer..

One of the police problems at the time was that they were searching for someone with maniacle traits. Someone who was clearly "mad." The ripper most likely was able to get away because he seemed normal, and didn't stand out at all. I think it is very likely that the actual murderer was never even questioned by the police, and has never been named as a suspect then or now.

Being of German origin myself, I have a theory about the different names: Charles Ludwig is obviously the anglicized version of his German name Karl Ludwig. Karl and Ludwig are both German first names. Then there is the name Wetzel, which is a frequent last name in Germany. So I think his full name might have been Karl Ludwig Wetzel, "Karl" and "Ludwig" being the first names and "Wetzel" the family name. On arrival in England, this might have turned into "Karl Ludwig"/"Charles Ludwig" because people thought that "Ludwig" was his family name. It's only a theory though that came to me while watching the brilliant video.

I see that there are fools who feel the need to deface everything over in GB just like they do here in the states. I was watching a video of some guy checking out the location where the famous Laurel and Hardy short film "The music box" was made and of course the neighborhood is now trashy and the plaque commemorating the site was all but unreadable, because of the low life's that just have to destroy everything that should be revered and respected. My guess is that most of the current individuals that occupy that area now do not read or speak English, so what the hell do they care about our historical treasures. smh
