Kawasaki KLX 300 Delkevic Exhaust Decibel Sound Comparison

  • I installed a Delkevic Stubby 14" Carbon Fiber Oval Muffler on my KLX 300. I ran decibel sound comparisons with the stock muffler vs. the new muffler with the different baffles and also without a baffle installed. The sound test provides insight into what the sound level means vs. just listening to the audio via TH-cam which can be misleading. For those who know a lot about exhaust systems and baffles, please share your insights in the comments.

    I have 22 300sm
    With the delkevic 14 over stainless
    With spark arrester installed
    DNA air filter
    02 delete
    Kdx200 snorkel.
    And it runs great
    Imo a fuel tuner is not needed.
    Great video

    Great video with good audio. I think it sounds best with the bagel it came with. I have the same year bike and I'm going to order one now. The black carbon one looks great with the rest of the black on the bike.

    Good info. I went with the same setup, except in stainless.
    My reason for going aftermarket was to get rid of the heat from the catalytic converter. I ride and camp in rugged country, and I don't like getting my legs and gear burned, especially when I crash. I would have preferred the quiet of stock, but ...

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point! The heat reduction is noticeable. I've dropped the bike on my leg and even with knee braces that heat can really get you. Also impacts my luggage set up with my light ADV set up but less heat now with the aftermarket muffler.

    Nice video but if I could offer a suggestion...to accurately use db comparison, standards are required. I have a db meter I have used in my racing career. Measurements taken 7 feet from the source at 2 foot elevation. For your viewers I have the following comparison of the stock KLX300 exhaust vs the FMF Q4, which is the quietest aftermarket exhaust I have found, but added power to the stock engine. I have installed the KX snorkel, Twin Air filter, EJK fuel controller under the left fuel tank side panel, removed the O2 sensor and the FMF Q4 exhaust with spark arrestor to get dyno results of 25.5 hp with 17.4 ft/lbs torque @ 8k rpm vs the stock at 23 hp with 15.4 ft/lbs torque. For me the great advantage of the KLX is torque. At 2.5k rpm you get 80% of the torque all the way to when the cam kicks in at 7k rpm with makes it really easy to ride at slow speed with lots of "tractor" like power! I rode the complete route of the Trans America Trail last year and I can honestly say the additional power of the mods on the hill climbs and technical portions of the trail, the KLX preformed excellent! I did change the rear sprocket to a 42T which is much better at slow speeds but runs the engine only 4k rpm higher vs the stock 40T rear sprocket.
    RPM readings @ 2.1k/3k/4k/5k/6k/7k/8k
    Stock exhaust db @ 70/75/78/80/83/87/88
    FMF Q4 db @ 75/78/83/86/87/89/91
    I am very interested if you could follow the db test parameters above and test the Delkevic pipe for comparison.
    One addition note....on the Kaw KLX forum, one viewer put together what looks to be a Supertrapp exhaust system on his KLX300 with no other mods and the dyno showed 25 hp, just with the exhaust mods!! I do not find this available on the Supertrapp website and reached out the viewer to see if he would provide parts so that other can do the same, but no response to date...maybe someone else could try.

      Thanks for the great info! I agree with you, I should have marked the exact same spot when measuring the db reading. I noticed just moving a foot or so would vary the reading. I'll run the test at 7 feet from the source and two feet elevation for the different baffles to see what the difference is more precisely. Thanks for the suggestion.
      Riding the KLX for the entire TAT is a great testament to the capabilities of this motorcycle. The low end torque continues to surprise me as well. I'll look into the 42T rear sprocket since I like riding the KLX on slower single track trails.
      Cheers!

      Hey! I just read through your awesome write-up. Do you know of anyone has made a chart or table with the decibel levels of all of the different aftermarket exhausts available? Or at least some of them? I'm primarily looking to keep the bike quiet and lose more weight.

    Thanks for this! Im thinking about putting one on. i like the quietness of stock but I just wish it was a liiiittle bit louder. Theres a offroad club around here that says you cant have any aftermarket exhausts and im wondering if the spark arrestor would satisfy why they say that 🤔

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my opinion, the spark arrestor option was just a little bit louder but not too loud vs stock and the decibel test shows the same results. You might have a case of extra safety with the spark arrester? Mufflers are pricey though so you may want to check with group prior to purchase. Glad the video helped.

    Nice comparison. My new to me (used with just 150 miles) 2023 KLX300 is basically stock right now. Changing the exhaust is way down the list after fall and personal protection. However too many of these video's have to do with "the sound". My only reason for changing to aftermarket anything would be #1 performance gains that really make a difference & #2 weight. Tough between the two of them. "Sound" I really couldn't care about. I've found after many bike builds that the factory engineers already knew what they were/are doing and especially on the performance-end... if you needed to squeeze more and more out of the bike maybe you should have just bought a different bike. My original owner/seller used the KLX for a week and then went out and bought a Beta. That's over the top for me so my luck I got exactly what I wanted in a basic cookie-cutter bike I can make but not make major modifications to and not make it something it never will be (a Beta).
    I'll put 1000+ plus miles on her and then decide on the exhaust and also swapping out the stock heavy battery. Those both for weight-specific reasons only.
    But a great comparison video that with the decibels listed help out as a secondary choice if that's important to you. So Thanks much.

      Thanks! I do feel a nominal difference in performance when I changed the air intake snorkel and exhaust though. The sound is important to me due to decibel limits for events I ride where the bike is test prior to the start. Thanks for the comment and enjoy your 2023 KLX300!

    I got FMF power core on my klx250s loud but not obnoxious. I wouldn't have it quiet. It should have a thump to it

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! I also considered FMF but they were sold out while I was researching options. That "thump" feeling from the aftermarket mufflers makes the bike feel more alive, I totally get it. Similar with my Delkevic.

    Hey there, I'm interested in this pipe - did you have to extra order the Spark Arrestor, or did it come in the box? Looking at this listing on their site for the carbon and full stainless version, it says it does not come with a spark arrestor, but one is available. How much more did you pay for the spark arrestor?
    Secondly, I'm looking for an exhaust that gives like 10-20% more sound but will not piss people off in town if I'm ripping around. I've had a ton of loud exhausts and I'm looking for the quietest upgrade that I can do. Thoughts now that you've had it for a year?

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello. the pipe allows you to use your stock spark arrestor as I recall. It also comes with 2 different baffles and the sound is deeper and louder but not too loud where it will piss people off. It passes dual sport event pre-tests that require a spark arrestor and decibel limits. I am very happy with the purchase and it also helped improve engine performance.

    I have a CRF250L and they make a full kit for it with the same silencer. I run the spark arrester because forest service approved however it does give the bike a bit of a raspier exhaust note that I'm not a huge fan of. Tempting to order the quiet baffle and see how it works, its the length of the spark arrester but solid so it would hopefully be thumpier but quieter?

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also run a spark arrester for the same reason, forest service road rules and fire safety. Not sure but it might be worth a try to test the quiet baffle.

      @@theEHWAZ unless you did a full exhaust there is no real reason to do a tune. It looked like you only did a slip on exhaust so you should still be good with factory tune.

  • @SmokinZen
    @SmokinZen ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I want to do this without the tuner not really worth the money if it’s not a huge difference, don’t want to spend money for just sound

    • @theEHWAZ
      @theEHWAZ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends what you are looking for. If you want better performance, then the muffler alone won't cut it. I'm still considering a tuner myself.
