Breaking Silence: Inside the closed world of Carmelite Nuns

  • Carmelite Nuns living a contemplative life of silent prayer behind the high walls of a monastery in Christchurch, New Zealand. This compelling short documentary provides great insight into the closed world of these nuns. For the first time, Carmelite Nuns share different, in such an intimate session, the things they go through on a daily basis, and talk about their past, hopes, fears, moments of joy and despair, men, and the feeling of living in enclosure for years.
    Living as hermits in community, sisters are dedicated to a life of prayer, contemplation and study. They serve Christ and the world as a spiritual powerhouse, praying for the world and its needs. As with any powerhouse, the monastery is largely closed off to the public in order to keep out elements that would distract from the work that goes on inside.
    The Carmelite Nuns are dedicated to a life of prayer, following the example of the Desert Fathers who lived on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land, especially the biblical prophet Elijah. In the 13th century, a group of hermits gathered on Mount Carmel to live a life of prayer.
    Their chapel was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Eventually, St. Albert of Jerusalem, at their request, wrote a rule of life for them to follow, which is the basis for Carmelite life today.
    This is an exclusive inside look into the lives of Carmelite nuns. ENJOY.

      Maybe you should go on a retreat some time. You might really love it. I was invited to go on a silent retreat once and was somewhat hesitant because, I've always been a chatty. I went and it was such a powerful experience. It was great to shed technology and all the other distractions of life and just be open to the experience. When I left, I felt deeply quenched in my soul. I was so relaxed and I knew the weekend had done me a world of good. For many years I went twice a year. My work schedule now, makes it a little more challenging to go, but I've been really desiring that retreat again.

    What strikes me about all of the women in this video is how utterly genuine and emotionally honest they are, how comfortable in themselves. There's also a true spark of joy in them; their very smiles are different, as if deeper and truer than the smiles of most of the people we come across in our daily lives. I'm not Catholic but was educated for four years in Catholic boarding schools run by nuns and know from personal experience that some nuns are true Christians in the best sense of the word.

      @@andrenajones767 The bible alone (Sola Scriptura) is itself unbiblical. Jesus is the only Savior, but we are also supposed to participate in the work of salvation and we do that through proclaiming the Gospel and praying for and attending to the needs of others. Elijah lived as a hermit and Jesus described him as "The greatest born of a woman."
      "I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John; yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” (Luke 7:28) Many of the Old Testament prophets would take 40 day fasts in the desert to focus on God and Jesus did it as well. This religious have dedicated their lives to Jesus and for humanity. Take it to prayer and perhaps the Holy Spirit will enlighten you.

      @CIST3 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andrenajones767 Jesus started the Church when he chose the 12 Apostles. They were entrusted with handing down the teachings of Jesus Christ. That is the origin of the Christian religion and Jesus himself practiced religion (Judaism) faithfully his entire life, so be careful of your "man made" criticism. Faith is a free gift given by God, but religion is what is practiced by those who accept the faith being offered. Observing the Sabbath and being disconnected from a community was never part of the plan.

      You can feel it again, by faith, when you trust God by faith.....the finished work of the atonement when you believe, can give you what the Bible calls..."the peace that passes human understanding..." Maybe you're looking for something that's in your mind a bit big to find; but start by trusting God in the little things, giving thanks, maybe putting a value on your meals and giving thanks.....thanking God for your hunger and being grateful when it's satisfied. Those are all things that Paul called..."knowing this, reckoning this..." he was saying be mindufl and focus. Step out from your feelings and trust God, when you can. Feelings of peace are nice when they are there, but exercise faith even when they're not there, if you can. And, you can.

    I am not a nun, but after several relationships I am now living alone and I am the happiest and most peaceful I've ever been in life. A few years back, I was devastated by the deaths of my two beloved uncles. That was when I realized that the love I was looking for but couldn't find in all the men I loved and loved me, was the love I experienced with them when I was little. Because that was pure and true love and that was when I felt the safest and most loved and cared for. So I realized that no spouse or lover can ever give that kind of love to me. But God can. And I feel now that God is enough. I feel His love everyday. So, in a way I understand what these nuns are saying when they say that anything they could need from a man, they find in Jesus Christ.

A very nice and peaceful oasis. Whenever I visit the monastery, it rejuvenates my soul, knowing that the sisters are helping me in my prayers for my salvation and that of the whole world. Of course, attending mass in any Catholic Church gives me the same feeling, but, it is a bit different when going to a monastery and see the kind sisters going-on with their activities and having conversations with them, buying their home-made products, seeing them happy in isolation from worldly ways…
    Crude jokes were made by people on the outside about the priests and nuns, but, I will have to remind these people, that there are also very good ones. And yes, these things happen in all religions because they have to do with the fact that we are imperfect beings and nothing to do with the religion/faith. That is where I cast my judgment. In all that the church has done to cover these crimes.

    Being a biological Catholic (Catholic before I was even born), I grew up knowing about the Carmelite Nuns. I didn't fully understand as a kid, only what my mum told me and then finding out as I came into adulthood through my own research.
    I've come to understand that not all Priests and Nuns are bad and cruel - there are genuine people who take up the mantle because they believe in a higher purpose - whilst there are a few who taint the vocation. And I know this because my uncle is a priest and 1 of the good 1s - and have met plenty of good priests and Nuns throughout my life.
    They are prayer Warriors, and that creates an energy that amplifies out into the world and to the universe. I know firsthand the power of their prayers, my mum was a prayer warrior, as am I and I've taught my grandchildren the power of positive prayer.
    My uncle always told me just because men and women dedicate their lives to God, they are still human and still experience feelings, struggle with emotions, have dreams aspirations and desires - those are human instincts that don't switch off - but they are worked through every day every year for the rest of their lives.
    Thank you for what you do sisters 🙏🏾😑💜

    This is a wonderful video. While I certainly appreciate very much their intercessory prayer...I cannot understand how they cannot physically have contact with their families. A friend of mine was a former Carmelite nun..her father was very ill and she was prevented from seeing him ...and he died shortly thereafter.
    I was my mom's caregiver for many years and it was particularly wonderful to be with her during her last 6 months into God's loving arms into heavenly glory.
    I think it would be a comfort for a dying parent
    To have their child by their side. Certainly this would have been a loving example of Jesus love had she been with her father. And at times like this...the love of Jesus would have been shown to her dad and eased his transition into glory.
    This is what I don't understand About the Carmelites.

    • @kevinerose
      @kevinerose 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I'm not a Catholic but I think the idea is the teaching that you love God more than family. There is a difficult verse in the Bible that if you don't hate your family, then you are not worthy to follow. This doesn't mean to actually hate them but to put that in comparison to God. Also, a follower asked Jesus for time to bury his father and Jesus said to let the dead bury the dead.
      Your friend will see her parents again in glory. It is believed that this life is very short and we are promised the hope of a better future in glory where there will be much time to be together. Her father likely understood all these things and knew she was thinking and praying for him.
      It is a difficult saying. Not many can accept or able to see to the future. Especially if we are thinking of pain of a loved one and comforting them at a difficult time.
