      Sapphire knows everything that COULD happen, like we saw in the baseball episode with the "i saw this was a possibility, but i'm surprised this is the route we're taking" line. She doesnt know what WILL happen, just that it might.
      Garnet might had a weakened future vision as compared to sapphire, or she might have more distance from it. But she still sees a multitude of possibilities. Considering this was one of the multitude, she mightve missed it, IF she was looking for it

    What makes the moral dilemma in Bismuth clear cut to me is how absolutely pathetic the Breaking Point is as a weapon of war. It's short range, can only be aimed at one target at a time, takes a little while to use, and relies on the target just sorta staying there and not resisting.
    It's not a gun or even a nuke. It's a guillotine. Not a weapon at all, but a method of execution, only useful for finishing off an enemy who is already defeated.

    • @baraxor
      @baraxor 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +41

      If Bismuth had invented a true WMD like whatever caused corruption, that would provide enough chips to play with so that an honest discussion about its use and moral implications could be had. The Breaking Point as shown wasn't that kind of weapon, it was just an execution device.
      Rose Quartz's primary aim was delivering Earth and its lifeforms from Gem Empire destruction; she accepted social change for Gems but only as secondary goals. Bismuth's primary goal was revolutionary societal change and liberation of Gems everywhere; whatever happened on Earth was secondary. This episode is what hapens when two ideals collide.

      I kind of agree, but also consider that, not even the homeworlder gems are willing to immediately go to intentionally shattering other gems (how they treat off-colours is hypocritical to that, though most Amethysts are ok with the main one being over-cooked). Escalating to murder, without it being an ordered execution, was breaking a big taboo; ending life, for a functionally immortal species. Though there's also the fact that this was more an emotional over moral decision.

    - Bismuth is voice by Uzo Aduba who also voices Alicia (Lightyear) & Kubritz (3Below), but she is more known for playing as “Crazy Eyes” (Orange is the New Black) which they made a bit of a refereanvce to this character when she was referencing some other gem as “Crazy Lace”. Fun fact Bismuth is not actually a gem it is a metal on the Periodic Table as the symbol Bi & atomic number 83, & you did see her before during Lapis’s flashback as the individual that poofed her
    - Lonely Blade says that the sword was forged by Muramasa which in Japanese legend was a sword smith that created many cursed / demonic swords due to his madness going into his swords which if a person would use them would cause murder or suicide
    - The eyecatchers during those episode are similar to some anime like Sailor Moon & Yu Yu Hakusho which speaking of some of the weapons in her forge are based on ones from anime like on the wall is a large sword = Omnimon’s Transcendent Sword & the Breaking Point = Big O’s piston or Ikoma’s piercing gun

    Gems can grow stronger through training like pearl who was made to be a servant but became a skilled fighter instead and they can develop new abilities like peridot who now has metal powers and Pearls laser beams are also new and we know that they can change as a person like what Peridot did. Its just that Home world does not give them the chance to change and improve. It keeps them stagnant for eternity.

    Fun fact: the bismuth episode was SUPER controversial when it came out because of the message. It is kind of crazy that Rose wouldn't even let her soldiers consider shattering the diamonds, especially in hindsight of EVERYTHING that happened to the crystal gems as a result. I found Bismuth's line about valuing the gems of their enemies over their own pretty compelling, and even today I think this one could have been handled better. Great reactions yall!

    • @echonvoid
      @echonvoid 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      I super agree. But I also think it’s very much a sign of the times. We’ve come to a better understanding that there’s a middle ground between slaughter our enemies and let everyone live and everyone gets a second chance. Like the diamonds (specifically white and yellow’s arc could’ve been longer) and their vague redemption arc that wasn’t super an arc. But also, violence breeds more violence, and there are plenty of people who just need the space and chance to learn to grow and be better and come to the understanding that they’ve just been lied to. That’s part of what made owl house so great. It should some need space to grow and heal and others should be ended swiftly and without mercy. But I am definitely on bismuth’s side; but with rose’s background I can see where she comes from not wanting to be the same as those she came from. It’s a beautiful contrast between those forged in war and those in peace. Since life is constantly evolving we have to take in the culture of the time in its entirety. And see it for what it was in that context; Steven universe is a perfect example of an incredibly helpful and valuable show that was vital to the understanding of mental health, healthy relationships, the lgbtq+ community, and honestly aged pretty damn well. It’s just life is violent and messy and it wasn’t what we needed and felt too… forgiveness brainwashy kinda shit that a lot of us with religious trauma had to be violent to wash that shit out. But once we did/were we were able to heal and realize that just cuz religious assholes were using it as an excuse to be abusive doesn’t mean that there wasn’t some helpful merit to it. Like, I grew up religious and the Jesus I pieced together from that shit show was a dude who was middle eastern, surrounded himself with the disabled, the mentally ill, fought for the rights of the hated, was definitely queer (my parents thought the idea of him being in any kind of relationship with a human was sacrilegious, so he was pretty much ace in my household growing up; now I think he definitely was in a gay relationship with John the Gospel dude, but still possibly ace idk) his best girl friend was schizophrenic prostitute who he never shamed for being a prostitute. And he was not afraid to be clever and use weird social shit against his enemies or to be violent if necessary. It’s crazy people use him as an excuse to do whatever the fuck they want to people they don’t like.
      Woah didn’t mean to word vomit like that my b

      This whole episode caused a big plot hole to form too. Does this mean the rebellion never killed ANY Gem? Did they bubble them all? If so, where? How did they even get the space for it? I HATE how they essentially said that Steven's values were the right values and the antagonists never properly challenged his mindset in any meaningful way. Shattering the Diamonds does NOT make the CG as bad as Homeworld. That argument is stupid and the fact Steven never realizes it's stupid is bad. You gotta remember a big part of Garnet is knowing it's important to live in the present, as shown when she taught that to Steven when he was freaking out about all the futures where he may get hurt. So often, she isn't always looking into the future, only when she wants to and needs to like in combat to predict attacks, or like when she suspects danger, etc. Also her future sight does let her see there are many possible paths, but she doesn't know for sure which path things might go so she tries to focus on outcomes that are both favorable and likely so that she can best direct things toward those paths.

I remember way back when it aired I finished watching and the only thing I could say was ''That was... Intense.''
    That final fight between Steven and Bismuth still gives me chills to this day, and those final lines are just burned in my memory in a way that I can recite them word for word even after all these years

    Since episode 1 we had the gems explaining their modus operandi, and they all link to their personal histories.
    Pearl was a lower class gem, made to look pretty and hold stuff, as Peridot said. She had to struggle to ear her position and power, so she teaches both Steven and Connie to train hard for every eventuality. Amethyst was made for combat, and even though she lacks the power she has the instinct, and everything comes naturally to her. Garnet is a fusion, and as she described she summons her weapons by balancing the energy and universal forces around her.

    So obviously you guys are onto/done with Future by now. But for anyone else wondering about seeing Bismuth previously, she appeared in "Same Old World" in Lapis' flashback as the one who poofed her in the war. It's so cool to see that no one spoiled this episode for you guys, and love seeing your continued hype for the show! Can't wait to see how the rest of the season plays out for you!

    It kinda foreshadow when bismuth was watching tv the the gang she said “muramasa should use the demon sword it just make sense.”
    And imagine how bismuth feel when she saw that Rose won but exchange everyone got corrupt/shatter just making what her point about the breaking point for true.

    Bismuth is an amazing episode in the larger narrative but I want to call attention to the fact of how well it works even for those who weren’t following the show closely. If steven universe was a show a close friend talked about often, but you really only know about the core cast and premise of them being long-lived alein war fugitives and nothing of where exactly we are in the story, this episode still hits hard. Not as hard obviously, and there’s no indication if it was intentionally written like this but nonetheless when I first saw this episode I understood it perfectly.
    Keeping the characters in the episode to the main quartet and a new introduction to them keeps the character load down and the prior character knowledge needed down for these people. Bismuth being re introduced to the world after the war helps these people get up to speed. Also, the main mystery: if bismuth is so great, why did rose put here away? is set up for these people as well, since Steven shows immediately that that’s why what’s in lions mane is there: to be put away.
    It also kinda floats above the season, where most every other episode has episodes that strictly must come before or after the placement of bismith is almost irrelevant, the only ropes it’s tied to being the progression of Steven’s abilities. Bismuth making her exit as soon as her entrance and the absence of Jasper or any other than out main 4 from this episode also allow it to float. But the story board artists tie it with the battle ability continuity of Steven v Amethyst.
    And yet at the same time of being almost totally disconnected from the present plot it puts so much into question in the past, and started so many discussions. Mainly the argument that bismuth is right. What kind of leader doesn’t give her army the best chance to win? The problem here is that rose was fighting for all gems to be able to chose, including her adversaries who are groomed into the diamonds way of life like peridot was. She didn’t want to take that choice away by shattering them. Yet at the same time crystal gems who were defeated and collected were interrogated and shattered. Its a moral dilemma for rose. Even when you do exclude the ‘killing is always wrong’ argument Bismith isn’t automatically right, but she isn’t wrong either. There are other problems with bismith’s vigor. Specifically taking the war to homeworld sounds like it was never in the original plan. But still the episode demonstrates the similar convictions of rose and steven while also painting a stark contrast between how they delt with the truth about Bismuth to her friends.
    This is just such an awesome special episode that manages to be a standout and emotional while not advancing the plot, inciting deeper conversation in the story while also being watchable by new/super casual fans. Honestly just an amazing job well done by the writers.

    I think the best thing about business characterization was how genuinely open she was to the new flow of things like her kindness and openness to all the new things she was experiencing wasn't a lie it was clearly the reason she joined Rose to begin with
    out of all the crystal gems she's definitely the character I would say believed in their cause the hardest
    She was just a soldier who put her comrades lives before the enemies which in her position I'm 100% positive I would feel the same way
    Then finding out you've been sealed away for over 5,000 years which for the people who needed their perspective is 50 times the length of Aang being frozen
    Not only did she come back to find all but two of her friends destroyed but the opposition still attacking the planet they're protecting
    That would be really bitter vindication that destroying the opposition was the only way to end things

    nope, the diamonds would often shatter gems who don't follow in line, like blue diamond who wanted to shatter ruby just bc she fused with sapphire. jasper is also cool with shattering, that was made clear in the episode you guys literally just watched, she was just about to shatter amethyst when steven and connie saved her ass

  • @flaminsouljah
    @flaminsouljah หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think it is implied that garnet doesn't look into the future all the time anymore, and only does it when it's necessary. In the early seasons she was working overtime as the leader and looking into the future to allow her and the others to prevent disasters without Rose around which is why she was so quiet and stoic. After Steven showed he could lead, and worked with Garnet to have her open up more she was able to relax and just enjoy the present more.
