I'm glad Will is still uploading, I can see why they attempted this format as in theory it would provide more excitement but it just didn't work out the way they wanted it.
What's not actually known is this idea kind of already happened . In the early rounds of 2006 when the 3 part qualifying start . However in Q1 and. Q2 drivers had to complete their lap before the timer hit zero ( if they didn't they lap would be disallowed). even if drivers had started their lap before the clock hit zero seconds. However drivers and team compalined so from the 2006 French Grand Prix all timed laps in all qualifying segments started before the chequered flag would be valid . Also another bad qualifying format was the the two single lap aggregate time qualifying sessions run in early 2005.
On the two-lap qualifying, it's more in reaction to the first qualifying lap being essentially Qualifying Practice. Which was a waste of time. So at least it actually came from somewhere with some reasonable sense. As opposed to this.

Personally I prefer IndyCar's road and street qualifying format of splitting the pack in two for two 10 minute Q1 sessions, the top 6 of each being sent to a single Q2 session, and the top 6 being sent to Q3. Gives 40 minutes of on track action with more drivers going all out due to there being fewer moving chicanes in their way and makes it easier to focus on specific drivers sending it.
@@ZontarDow F1 has knock out qualifying because of aero issues following cars That isn't as much of an issue with Indy with the spec chassis. I do like Indy qually too, but the top drivers would complain about traffic much more if the aero was different.
The best Q format was back in the good old days of the real men F1 with two hour-long sessions on two different days (usually, Friday and Saturday), unlimited tires, engines, etc and the best lap time across these two days being taken into account
An alternative if they wanted to do the elimination format could have been something like "Slowest drivers eliminated every 3 minutes and all lap time reset each time" that would require everyone to stay on track to not be eliminated .... thats what i though but honestly i love the current qualifying and dont want to change it
I find it so baffling that they did this. Qualifying is all about those last minutes of every session. Specially Q3 and the fight for the pole is usually decided a minute after the flag drops. That's what you are basically waiting for the entire hour. And then some job student comes along and thinks he is smart...
They could do something like Elimination Qualifying for Sprint Races; but it would be 1 session that takes up the whole 45 minutes, hour, however long Sprint Shootout is meant to be. And cars are eliminated in 2s or 3s periodically; far enough apart that you can go out and improve, but close enough together to have jeopardy over getting the lap in on your first go.
To avoid the traffic issues they could let some auto qualify on certain conditions or do some sort of bop (yeh I know) but the biggest issue I believe is still that one good result can make one driver far higher in the standings than they should be and points should be better distributed, or as this will upset those who only want top 6 to get points, they could do negative points below 10th 🤣
If they want more mix grids and early eliminations then they should do 20 -> 12 -> 6. Usually the cars in 8th-10th have no chance of getting higher up the grid come q3 anyway and we rarely see their lap so I don't think we'd really miss having them in q3
Merry Christmas Will, I’m down for the sprin🤯t qualifying, I actually really like it. F1 should be praised for trying to make changes. I know 2012 was a stand alone season, but as fans, that is the sort of unpredictable action we’d love to see or the fairy tale of 2009. I know people don’t like bringing it up & I don’t particularly like Hamilton or Verstappen, but can you imagine what a let down it would’ve been, if 2021 finished under the safety car. Given how viciously intense that season was, it would’ve been a real anticlimax to finish behind the safety car. 2021 also goes as to why, we shouldn’t have more teams on the grid, if they’re only going to be filled with Latifi type drivers… Changes are needed, maybe even just getting rid of the big 3, would shake it up enough… 🤷♂️
Elimination qualifying sucked, the only things I'd change about the current qualifying system: - Perhaps eliminate an extra driver per session so it's just 8 cars in Q3 -Award 3/2/1 pts. for the top 3 qualifiers or alternatively 2 pts. for pole. Since you mentioned sprints: I think they should move to the 10/8/6/5/4/3/2/1 point distribution normal races had in 2003-09 so there's more battles for the podium (or alternatively a 10/7/6... to reward a sprint winner more).
The only thing F1 should change is that the qualifying timing line should be in sector 3 before the pit lane entrance like IndyCar does. This avoids the need for a cooldown laps that lead to tows and blocking. It also gives teams an easy way to stop and get new tires on fast.
see, the way I see it is thus: Sprint Race (No qualifying for it) grid taken from result of previous race, reversed, or championship order reversed. After the end of each lap, last person is out of the race, thus forcing those at the back, to actually race hard to get through the pack. Then normal qualifying as we have it now, for the race.
I think they should move towards how touring cars raced. Multiple races a weekend, reverse grids and handicaps. The BTCC is one of the most exciting race series around, and F1 following their format would be great.
Lets be clear, this was another of Bernie Ecclestones crazy ideas that he rushed the teams into agreeing with to get the rules changed before they fully realised how bad of an idea it truly was. Format changes like this are almost always FOM's call and not the FIA's.
Knew at the time it was going to be a shocker even before that first Q1 as the normal original 3 knockouts system was far , far better improvement on all the old qualifiers systems and far more consistent and should never be messed with the only exception is probably at tracks such as monza and maybe a spa at a push as they have almost oval like amounts off drafting so they alone might benefit from a one a a time single car single shot system like Indy 500 does it so to stop the weird after you style driving! Only question if you did it for monza is if the qualifying time is just a lap on its own or a set distance like Indy’s 4 laps in a row = qualifying time?
Thankfully the current gen of cars seems to have naturally eliminated the qualy nonsense we saw in the years before, combined with lap time requirements for out laps.
I don't get why folks are afraid of having the fastest cars start the race from the front. Isn't that what qualifying is intended to establish? If you want a jumbled-up grid, then just show up on Sunday morning and pull numbers from a hat.
Qualifying is one rare instance where the point goes to NASCAR. As gimmicky and manipulated as the race is, somehow they are the only series that still does a fair qualifying session.
A wild idea is that if Perez drops the taco badly again he could be dropped for Lawson. A sink or swim moment for the kiwi given that the cash cow team drivers aren’t really doing enough
Not really. Most of the hour was spent doing nothing. They had a maximum of 12 laps including in/out so realistically, that's 4 runs. Then most teams wait until the end for the best track situation.
We like sprint races because its basicly a Bonus race where iconic stuff could happend. The 2016 qualyfing could maybe worked better if all teams needed to be on track until the end of the session or untill there eliminiated
Here's my take on Sprint qualifying: it shouldn't exist. Just reverse the top 10 after normal qualifying like the Junior series does, it's a much simpler way of going about things.
As one of the other 10 sprint fans you mentioned, I still don't understand why fans don't want every race week to have a sprint race. I know, it a lot of work and stress for drivers, mechanics, teams, etc. - but purely from a fans POV, more sprint races equals more action, and those sprints usually makes for more exiting races than the actual grand prix.
I'd like to see Reverse Standings Spring Qualification Race instead... To me, the best driver is one who can drive though the field, not drive away from it each week... This would add much more interest to Saturday, while letting Friday and Saturday morning continue to be dedicated to Free Practice. Sprint starting order would be reverse of standings (carried over from the previous year for round 1). Some tiebreaking rules would have to be created for rookies and substitutes... Oh, and keep points for the Sprint Race--but only limit it to the top 5 drivers.
People ragging on DTS is becoming abit pathetic now.... Oh no a good and successful show has actually helped bring the sport back and got new fans and money in Woe is me I wish F1 was still half empty tracks and no one wanted much part of it 🙄🙄🙄
I still believe that the teams deliberately sabotaged the format because it required more tires and more laps to finish qualifying. They could've very well go out and still fight for those laps. The only thing you need to do is go faster. It doesn't matter whether you are next up or not. If you are 3 places up, you can still go out to do the lap to make sure you go ahead. Waiting for the timer to pass and go "well we did nothing but thats all we could do" was just a dumb take to have at the time. There were at least 4 drivers that could've improved their lap time in order to move to q3. But I just think the teams decided they wouldn't want to push further and make sure the format died in Australia.
The original sprint version ended much like this system did. Anyone out of the points just turning it down to save engines. If the park ferme rules are revised this year, the sprints might be better. I also like that they are limited in number and rotate around to keep some novelty. I wish they still had a Q3/race tire rule. Then we might see some mixed up grids from people sacrificing to win pole or coming from behind on mediums. The Q2 tire rules just ruined the action. When we have competive cars the knockout shines in Q3. Like Lando says, "Max ruins everything."
Unfortunately the best we can hope for with sprints this year is reversed top 10 grids. There's a good reason the race on your Q3 tyres rule was dropped, the top teams didn't care but midfield drivers that made it in to the top 10 would find themselves disadvantaged for doing well. Punishing someone because they outqualified their competitors is a terrible idea.
I must be in the minority as I liked this format lol the current 3 session format is boring lol. My favourite was the 1 shot quali back in the day. There's no jeopardy and mixed up grids are rare unless it's wet
