    The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has two of my great loves in it: social media mess and reality television shenanigans. Born from the rubble of social media scandal, Secret Lives follows women from the group MomTok, a group of women living in Utah who are all mothers, Mormons, and all make dancing videos on TikTok. Let's talk about the insane first episode, unplanned pregnancy, power struggles, and of course, tiktok dances.

    The show made so much more sense to me when someone mentioned these women went from living with their parents to being married with kids at 18. They never got the chance to learn about themselves or grow so of course they're acting like teenagers in their mid 20s.

      @@AmyAmore99did you have premarital sex? I’m not literally asking but that’s a big difference. Getting married at 18 partly because you are pregnant is different than getting married without experience & then intentionally starting a family. It’s just a different mind set.

      @@AmyAmore99 the fact you're not Mormon might be part of the difference. I'm not American, and while we have some Mormons in my country, we have many other religious and cultural groups that practice similar lifestyles. Girls in particular are almost always raised to have zero agency, to be completely dependent on someone else (e.g. one of my friends refused to go with us on a trip because "we never traveled without an adult before"... We were all 20 or older). Even I, although I was not part of any of these cultural or religious groups, was told that I should get married before I live alone or go forward in my studies because "men only want women who are less mature or educated than them".

      This is actually a HUGE part of why im concerned people are taking away the wrong conclusions from this show.
      The Mormon Church is worth Billions of dollars and is likely the largest land owner in the country. They do a LOT of harm to those who don’t feel like they can “be themselves” within the system. They fight against women’s health care, education, and LGBTQ+ rights with the money that members have to give to remain a part of the church.
      It HELPS the church to be seen as tolerant of these women despite their divorces or even immodesty (you ARE supposed to wear the garments etc). It makes the church appear more approachable and they have recently been allowing more “lapses” by popular Mormon influencers. Despite this, I believe the Mormon church inflicts trauma on so many people including women and queer kids.
      I suggest checking out Jordan and McKay on TH-cam. They chose to leave the Mormon church after going on mission, getting married in the temple, etc.

    • @sleepysystem
      @sleepysystem 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +417

      havign listened to ex-mormons: the church may not approve but pardons things like this from influencers bc luring in younger people is one of their goals. not being viewed as cultish and harmful to women as it really is is important to the continued growth of the mormon church. on the whole so long as theyre paying their dues and making the church look non-restrictive and appealing theyre doing their job and are given privileges and leeway that most members of the faith would never receive.

      Just wait until you're exposed the the shockingly likely theory that the church is the one putting up all the adsense money for their content though (Alyssa Grenfel has a great video on this). What's more likely is they'll forgive a lot if it might attract people to the church who will also tithe and drink the kool-aid a bit better than these influences.

If you aren't the Queen Bee in your group, you're clearly not trying hard enough and deserve all the things that happen to you in your life. I was laughing so hard that the big drama was around the baby blessing. That shit happens. ALL THE TIME. I was horrified at Zac's behavior, especially considering he's gambling. SUPER not ok if you're a temple recommend carrying member (which apparently they are) which means they're lying to their Bishops. He was mad at her for going to a strip club, which he gambled with money SHE gave him. Get real dude. I feel bad for her kids.

    • @blubbydragon5381
      @blubbydragon5381 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +62

      That’s just Utah “ME FIRST!” culture. I lived in Utah for 5 years and that’s super normal behavior there. It’s mixture of there being a cultural bubble that lets people still act like high schoolers well into adulthood, and a culture that strongly encourages you to always care about yourself over others.
      An example: My sister worked at a dental practice for 2 years in a city called Lehi. There was one time she walked in on one of the assistants screaming at her mom on the phone because apparently the girl’s family had a yearly family reunion and didn’t ask HER permission to invite a family friend of the mom’s who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and was literally set to pass in 2 months. This was a woman the girl had known since she was a baby, and she didn’t have any bad blood with either. She also knew this woman was a divorced single mother who had no extended family to turn to, and that inviting her to the family reunion right before she was going to die was important emotionally. The girl just felt her family was required to bend to her will. Her actual response on the phone was “I mean yeah I know she has cancer and that it’s serious and she’s gonna die or whatever, but still! You should’ve asked ME!”
      It’s weird because the LDS church tries to stress caring for others, but the state it controls is so morally screwed.

    I think one of the underlying issues with Dakota is that he wants so badly to be "normal." I think it is essential for him to have boundaries surrounding his sobriety, and in general… but he is also controlling and manipulative.
    I think a lot of it comes from him feeling that this is his chance at a "normal" family, and to be a "good person" again. Having a child out of wedlock would push him further into the "bad apple" stereotype he's running so hard from. I empathize with him, but that doesn't give him the right to bulldoze through Taylor's desires for a stable partnership.
    Taylor prioritizes her happiness over seeming like a "good girl" doing things "the right way." She contributes to their relationship's toxicity, but she has good reasons to be so hesitant, and I will automatically ride for any woman society tries to slutshame into an abusive marriage.
    Being a husband and a father will not automatically make Dakota's sobriety and religious struggles easier, and Taylor is under no obligation to take that bullet for him when she clearly has her own issues to address.
    I also think she is trying her hardest to push him away without outright ending things and being blamed, and it must still be scary for her to think about being on her own. She clearly cares about him, but I support her putting her safety and wellbeing before him.

    While watching this show I noticed that these women use the term MomTok to describe both their friend group and their brand; to them the term is fully interchangeable. I think that's what's so off-putting about it, they can't seem to distinguish the difference because they have no work life balance; their work and life are the same thing and they have no self-awareness about that.

    • @chloe5065

      I mean yeah, I don't think they are legit friends at all. Like Amanda pointed out, too, if they were friends they'd care more. At least hopefully they would.
      But also these kids probably haven't ever had much of a chance to be, you know, a young person starting a career and figuring themselves, even a part time one while pursuing education. They've all become mom as practically and actually teenaged kids finishing or even during their high school years. They don't have a frame of reference for work vs personal life, since you know. In a sense school is both for teens, their occupation and their personal life and friend group.

    ive rewatched the show like 2 times now because its so ridiculous, I also think knowing know that Jessie isn't actually Mormon anymore makes it really interesting to see her actions on the show and other peoples thoughts towards her

    A friend of mine was Mormon and had to leave the church because of how toxic it was. My friend told me some of the stuff they said to her, and the politics that goes on in the religion, and in comparison to what you have described I fully believe these ladies are just average Mormons.

    I’m glad I have you and Alyssa Grenfell to watch about this show, because god I cannot stand it, these people are so infuriating, I had to stop watching after the second episode 😂
