- We're back to talk the Harley Quinn animated series, a show that's a loving call back to the likes of Batman The Animated Series whilst also putting a unique spin on some iconic DC properties. Following the adventures of Harley, Poison Ivy, Clayface, Joker, Batman and more with the reintroduction of joke characters like Kite Man it balances small character moments with huge world ending scenarios. My favorite reference is early in season 1 when Bane gets mildly frustrated with trivia and is just like “I’m gonna blow up gotham stadium”
or when he teamed up with Two Face and complained about not being on the poster Twin Face made and he told him he is the shadow behind his face...Bane was like 'I was born there but its not me' or something like that haha

It was "Who played the most games in Gotham Stadium?" Bane said Dallas Cowboys, it was the Pittsburgh Steelers. Which was a reference to the fact they filmed the Gotham Stadium scenes at Heinz Field, the Steelers stadium.

Pedantic correction aside, I love that scene because I've never been in a relationship despite being 26 years old so hearing Batman say "I didn't have a nemesis until my late twenties" is kind of reassuring. The way they talk about it comes across more like they're talking about a lover - cue Batman and Joker gay fan fiction - instead of a mortal enemy.

Clayface is usually depicted as an actor who ends up turning to crime after an accident. If anything, it's a very accurate portrayal because he even becomes a good guy later in the comics
He seems more of a theater actor then anything. A dramatic while the other version was a failed movies star.
I was disappointed he wasn't played by Matt Berry, but definitely seems to be channeling Toast.

I love how Bane is treated as a sidekick in this series, despite the fact that he could absolutely destroy most of these characters in a 1-on-1 fight.

I loved how he is roided out yelling at two face so i was like “yes, finally he will alpha two face after he just annihilated the BATMAN” but then two face calms him down just to belittle him again 😂😂😂😂

They did it because Giancarlo Esposito was the best pick for Luther and they wanted the voice to match his look, heck I didn’t even notice he was darker skinned until people pointed it out as I just thought he was designed to look like the DCAU version with big lips

My favorite character is Kiteman, and he's also a symbol of why this show works so well. They took Kiteman, a character who's mostly known as a joke, and gave him a relatable backstory and a compelling character arc without erasing or negating the already established lore about him. I also love how corny and dramatic Clayface is, lol!

Same here. I saw 1 clip and decided that I’d watch soon. Then I went on to watch more clips and spoiled some of the story. Then I instantly watched it.
I'm so late to this party and very upset about that, this show looks like it kicks ass.
Same! I saw random clips on youtube and instantly bought the first season, binged it. Then saw season two was coming out on DCuniverse then waited and got a DCuniverse account to watch the second season. Cancelled it afterwards since I only had a passing interest in one other show which was DOOM Patrol which I didn't care enough about that show to keep the sub going.
I enjoyed this show WAY more than I thought I would. It's just so amazingly written and all round so well handled. It legit blew me away. I also love that it's a Harley Quinn show but everyone gets to shine. All the supporting characters are so well written and they all get to shine.
Except for the Penguin, ups....
Harley Quinn reminds me of Avatar: The Last Airbender in terms of it's writing quality. Of course the stories are very different but they're both very well written shows which give all the important characters time to shine. Avatar stumbled at the end with the Energy Bending deus ex machina and needed Legend of Korra to explain it, while Harley Quinn ruffled feathers with the "white man bad" joke in the first episode but for the most part, the writers did excellent work.
I remember not liking the first episode initially, because it felt like it was trying super hard to be shocking.
But ultimately it turned out to need a very brief adjustment period on my part; after an episode or two, once I 'got' where this show's head was at, it was complete love. And now I can go back to that first episode on the yacht and fuckin' die at that 'piss' joke. Joker's face for a brief moment is almost one of... hope? 🤣

This was literally my first experience with Harley Quinn in a nutshell. I didn't like the first episode initially, but afterwards the show was amazing.
The "Best"? Where a maniac who has killed over 600 innocent people is allowed to walk freely? Where Harley Quinn, who once slaughtered dozens of TODDLERS, is being made a hero now? Where the wicked are portrayed as the victims? How is any of this good?
The first line in the first episode pissed me off because it was a "white man bad" joke. After that though, I fell in love with the series. Actually this incarnation of Harley is my second favourite, after Arleen Sorkin. I originally wanted Hynden Walch to voice Harley in this series - she's underrated and doesn't get the attention she deserves because Tara Strong's been the go-to Harley since Arleen retired - but now I'm glad they chose Kaley Cuoco.

The Harley /Poison Ivy relationship has me in two minds. On the one hand, Hollywood struggles to depict intense female friendships like how we have "bromances" (there's not even a word for it)without it becoming a sexual relationship, as though two women loving each other can't happen without it becoming sexual. I know friends who love the crap out of each other, but it never being sexual for either of them. This happening even where one is gay (not saying it would be inevitable, just that if this were on a show, it would be). I think girls need to see powerful friendships like that growing up and it really needs to be shown way more frequently.
However, on the other hand, the same can be said for the normalisation of same sex relationships, lesbians included, where there are only a few examples, notable because of their rarity. The show depicts Harley and Ivy's blossoming love in such a natural, engaging way that works perfectly. It leaves me leaning on the side of thinking that this is how something like this needs to be done.
that's my problem with fans shipping everything, it really undermines the value of great friendships.
But the series handled what it wanted to do very well, that's true.
@Conn Benn I've watched Derry Girls, it's a great show and yeah, it's got a couple of great layers to it. I'm British and was a kid around the times the show is set, so I remember 'the troubles'. Even then I was confused about all the pain happening there. The show is a really good look at girls being protagonists and shows just how cool and funny this can be. I also recommend Absolutely Fabulous. It's hilarious and hardly ever features men. It's from one of our big comedians and took the country by storm when it first came out.
Personally, I would've preferred if they had stayed friends and explored it that way. I've seen more than a few times where two female characters are close friends and all of a sudden "whoops, I guess they're lesbians" (Korra, Life is Strange, The Last of Us: Left Behind, She-Ra, etc). LGBT representation is all well and good, but I want to see genuine friendship between two women without having romantic or sexual undertones being portrayed with the same care and attention as so many bromances have been.

@@antidave it's a weirdly common trope now to have the main female character revealed to be gay at the last minute, (or later, for Korra, from what I hear) - I think that's what was being complained about, given that all their examples that I knew did that.
I assume that's not what you would want representation to look like?
I mean the She-Ra one is especially annoying because the relationship was pretty clearly sisterly (they're essentially adopted as babies and grew up together), and the entire show was about the two having actually interesting internal and external motivations and conflicts on both sides that had nothing to do with wanting sex, then literally the last handful of minutes "they're gay and in a relationship now, the day is saved", so it's a complete "huh?".
The others are *generally* less terrible, Last of Us doesn't have it come up at all and the reveal is in DLC which is entirely about the relationship, so that's fine, and it sounds like Harley Quinn is doing this right too, I really wish I could watch it in a reasonable way.
This is how DC seperates themselves. Make everything unique and worth a watch for an experience.

Absolutely agree. They took the Bane we expected based on TDKR and added a bit of comic flair to create a fun character.
I still yearn to see a proper version of Bane, as a latino character, as an international criminal mastermind in virtual control over a small island nation, and a genuine threat to Batman on the physical, mental, and financial level (most bat-villains only challenge Bruce on one or two of these fronts).
BUUUT, barring that, I'll literally never get tired of any joke shitting on TDKR. Bane is one of the best characters on Harley Quinn.
@@QuintessentialQs Watch young justice for that bane. He's not in their often but he is latino with control over Santa Prisca and gave batman a run for his money in season 3 of the show when he learned to fight without using venom. Young Justice probably has the most accurate Bane yet.

One thing I love about the voice for this Harley is that sometimes she *does* do an impression of the original voice, and it always feels right.
Ian I love it because that “voice” is an affectation from her youth growing up with her family. Theyve made it an organic thing but also depict her not using it when appropriate or with other people. She is the most nuanced & fleshed out version of Harley (outside comics) to date. She feels like an actual character with a personality not a caricature like Margot Robie!

The show that Harley Quinn reminds me the most of is The Venture Bros. That show also has a style of comedy based heavily on putting supervillains in real life situations and is super trope saavy. It's a staple of Adult Swim, more people should watch it.

I hate when people take the show seriously and are like "the only comic accurate personality is Harley quinn." The show is a parody, everyone is a parody of themselves and the way I look at it it's in Harleys point of view on the characters and how she sees them.
If there can be different versions of Batman, Superman, etc. then there can be different versions of Harley Quinn. People need to chill out
That would make a lot more sense if they leaned into it the way they did in the first episode where they showed what really happened when Harley thought Joker proposed to her. We see that that's not what happened at all and he actually left her for dead and she was shattered. If they kept showing how wrong she is about the world, I'd have a lot more fun with all the parodies, but they seem to have abandoned that concept after the first episode. Unless they brought it back later, because I stopped watching it a long time ago. I'm going to go back and watch a couple more episodes, but if they don't convince me I'm done and never looking back.
As for different versions of Batman, Superman, etc. those are usually done for a specific reason. Like what if Batman became a vampire or existed in the Victorian era or was a pirate. Or what if Kal-el were raised by the Waynes instead of the Kents. Unless it's just something bad like Adam West Batman, Super Friends, or The Batman. I don't mind this version of Harley Quinn; she's not even that different. It's the other characters that bother me.

But like she sees kiteman like a douchebag and robin as just a kid, when in reality kiteman was a depressed man who lost his kid and poison Ivy for the first time felt bad for him and Damian is still the Damian we know. Idk maybe I'm just somewhat creative and try to make since of things. Also if they kept pulling back into reality saying "hey, this isn't what really happened" it would probably ruin the feel of the show, maybe it could be like a series finale twist.

I think the reason everybody is shoving this show in your face and trying to get people to watch it is because we all know DC is taking a bit of a risk making something so good yet so different than their normal line up. We want people to support it so that they continue making it!

just finished this show and its super fun and comic accurate, it felt so refreshing to see a superhero comedy not be so in-your-face and edgy. also harley and ivy's relationship was soooo well developed

Johandry Tenias I think its a guaranteed safe bet. If Young Justice is getting a season 4 & Harley Quinn was ranted & raved about far more than it, I suspect season 3 is a forgone conclusion, especially when both shows are easier to produce during the pandemic than live action.

The 'exact example' that you were probably thinking of was that Batgirl starts and exists in The Animated Series, but also starts and exists in this. Also, watch Doom Patrol; it is a perfect introduction to a bunch more characters that you've never heard of and Alan Tudyk is the main villain/ narrator.

He's the greatest voice actor for Joker since Mark Hamill.

This series managed to do what Teen Titans Go couldn’t. It made fun of the DC characters while also still having them be really cool.
harley Quinn is one of the few cartoon shows that will pretty much always make me laugh out loud atleast once per episode.

Doom Patrol has some interesting stuff going on, but for a character-driven show, its characters are awfully flat.

I've seen every episode probably 5 times. Some lines never fail to make me laugh. And that Harlivy slow burn....CHEF'S KISS.

I swear to god amount of people that don't know that show like Venture Bros. exist is huge. Meanwhile the dialog between Mr. Freeze's henchmen felt like homage to Henchman 21 and Henchman 24 friendship.

I am blown away every episode at how good this show is.
I was interested in this series but I wasn’t interested enough to sign up for DC Universe. My money was on the fact if the service failed all the good programming would end up on superior services. I wasn’t wrong. When it ended up on SYFY on demand I binged it knowing DC would pull it the second they realized people were actually watching it. I wasn’t wrong, almost the second after I finished watching season 1 it was pulled from SYFY. Now, it’s on HBO Max, a service people actually use, so I could binge season 2 and probably future seasons.
Every review of this series I’ve seen has been overwhelmingly positive, this show deserves every bit of recognition it gets and more people need to watch it!

As much as I loved the series, the cheating arc in season 2 has diminished my love of the series as a whole.
Such a good show and great cast. The nemesis episode is my favorite followed by the Jim Gordon/ Clay face hand episode.

My only gripe is Ivy immediately kissing Harley at the end of season two’s finale. Like goddamn bro maybe take some time to figure your life out some more. You almost got married today
I think they should have been a couple much sooner
2 more episodes after that and it would have worked better. I think the writers wanted them together just in case they don’t get a season 3.

I love how this show started as a satire of itself. But by the time it got to season two, the characters just took off on their own - and you realise how good they work as foils of each other.

While I like the show, It's a bit too far to say that the best DC show is the show that makes Fun of DC all the time.
It all gets old real fast.
I hate it when shows like Young Justice are not Prioritized over these.
Young Justice has deep layered plots while playing a balancing act with the tone which deserves a lot more respect than it gets.

Loved this show. Season 1 was much better than 2 I think, though I have to give credit to season 2 for at least being decisive with where it was going and executing thoroughly. I didn't really want them to take it where they did, and I was a bit disappointed at how much it revolved around the main relationship. But an awesome show nonetheless.

It is a reallly great series, no question. It _gets_ the character of Harley, & it's does a good job of depicting the efftects of her abusive relationship w/the Joker,& how it's effected Harley w/out being too _"woke"_ about it - however it's not the best DC series. _Doom Patrol_ is the better show overall, & doesn't get the recognition it deserves. If you haven't seen it, & you're a fan of these _super-heros existing in the real world_ shows, you really need to check it out. It's fucking fantastic.
