- Table Mountain National Park and the Marine Protected Area gives Cape Townians and visitors an opportunity to view wild animals in their natural environment.
The Cape clawless otter (Aonyx capensis) is one such species.
The Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area provides Cape clawless otters (Aonyx capensis) with a valuable, stable feeding environment.
Otters are curious, clever, and perfectly adapted to freshwater and marine habitats
They feed primarily in aquatic habitats while breeding and resting on land.
They feed on various species, from freshwater crabs and fish to marine west coast rock lobster and shy sharks.
The main threats facing the Cape peninsula otters are habitat loss, being killed by cars and dogs, rat poison, and pollution.
Some otters are shy and stay away from people, while others are bolder and approach people. Cape Peninsula residents, especially in Simon’s Town, are reporting this bold behavior more frequently
Otters are wild animals and need to be treated as such.
There boldness and curiosity should not be misunderstood as friendliness or wanting to “play” with people.
Lets keep them wild by keeping our distance and not feeding or touching them.
