I was 20 at the time...stayed up all night to watch this...recorded it on casette placed near our television...still have that casette.....this was a terroristic raid instead of a gig....fucking great !!!!
John Cale lead vocals , piano , guitar ; Dave Young guitar, vocals ; Andy Heerman bass & vocals ; Dave Lichtenstein drums. It is the same band of the album Caribbean sunset of the same year (1984). Splendid rock concert , very Velvet Underground drums & mood , in my opinion . John is great : voice, guitar, piano just fantastic. Thank you for posting !
The guitarist is good but I couldn't find more into about him. He played on the Caribbean Sunset album. The guy on his recent live record is good too and there's not a lot of info on him either. Cale finds these great unknown guitarists.
@@massimilianoguidotti2360 - I found Carribean Sunset album at Tower Records and picked it up. So glad I did! That album was on an obscure label and is not to be found anywhere on the standard platforms. Similar to Music For a New Society, it was Cale at his most uniquely talented and expressive. To see the same band that was on the album is a treat. Cale could make music you seldom tired of, although at first it seemed noncommercial, his songs grew on you and never let go. The secret talent of Wales- who made the VU as unique as it was- was talented beyond any scene or place- he was world class, and on par with any classical or rock artist anywhere. He was too big for just Wales and too European just for New York. This video shows that.
This era of cale is a giant blindspot for me. When I think of him, i hear the early 70s records, and then I remember the contemporary stuff from Nookiewood onward. I don't know any of these songs 15 mins in. Hypnotic devo esque stuff. I love it. Didn't notice until 3 songs in that he was playing a flying v. lol
Most songs he's performing here are from his 1984 album Caribbean Sunset, the critics slated it, but imo it's a great post-punk album. Here's the link: th-cam.com/video/tJ-PI2YTo9Q/w-d-xo.html
I.hand painted his face from the album Fear on a bright yellow t-shirt with black fabric paint but, I left out the nose cause I wasn't sure I could get it right So I go to the Whiskey a go go to see him live and wait for him at the back door So he shows up and saw my shirt and wants to sign it no-one has a pen so we see the show and after someone gave me a magic marker and I approached his limousine and he gladly signs it with the word nose and an arrow pointing at where it should be
Johns a true multi instrumentalist. He lived the rock'n'roll life style and managed to clean up and get his head back on. It's not easy and some can some can't. Glad he did.
It’s a brilliant performance, even though John is definitely regretful that there’s a visual document of it. He watches a bit of this at the beginning of the “Heroin, Wales, and Me” documentary, and he labels this performance as “hard to watch.“
Finally some footage from the Caribbean Sunset album- out of print and one of my favorites! This is a great find. I saw him live in San Francisco in 1986 for the first time with Chris Spedding but it was just those two. Love this!
Watched it live on TV at the time, in my student dorm, was rather late (2:30 am I think, 1 hour wait or the like). Never got a better Rockpalast night...
You can really hear here how his lifestyle had taken a toll on his normally rich and expressive voice (and he looks pretty rough as well) - it's really great that he cleaned up and managed to get back his wonderful vocal abilities
Fully agree, otherwise he possibly wouldn't be around with us any more. But on the other hand I wouldn't want to miss those outrageous gigs from him, some extraordinary performances back then. Have you watched his 1983 Rockpalast gig, which I have also uploaded: th-cam.com/video/Pu1im2Ia-JQ/w-d-xo.html Cale solo on piano and accustic guitar, a far more cleaned up performance. Possibly he was coked up to the ears, an amazingly intense and atmospheric performance from the Welsh Wizard.

@@ForARide Thank you, but I beg to differ, and how can anyone put up with such an audience? I have tapes from the same period in France, JC was fine.
Many thanks for placing this here. Great performance and who sitting in front of the TV taping it or watching John Cale live could forget the memorable end of the concert. Simply magic!
Wow what a gem. I’ve been listening to him since I first heard him with Terry Riley. A brilliant contribution to modern music. This is a great concert.
I knew Mr Cale's work back then, never saw him live before. Watching this on German live TV was spectacular. Did he make up Autobiography on the spot? Brilliant!
John Cale has always been my favorite male musician and Laurie Anderson my favorite female musician so, imagine how tripped out I was when she married Lou Reed The love triangle was complete
I saw him in '83 in Werchter and that concert was even better then this, but don't get me wrong......this is a great performance.....for a long time a had a cassette with the Werchter gig....played it and played it until it was ruined....so i watch this concert a couple of times a year......

Personally, this is the solo John Cale style I prefer-- the rougher rock sound from 1974 to 1984.
same but i also like him now.

Dave Young. He died few month ago. He was the bass player for "Element of crime". Three decades ...
