Honestly his mindset slowly changed after that episode in season 1 where Emilia and him had that big blowout about him wanting to always protect her. And he has more experience in fighting and knows how big of a threat the Witch’s Cult is, not necessarily him getting desensitized to him dying.
Fun fact: The voice actor for Roy Alphard (The second gluttony) is the exact same voice actor for Lye Batenkaitos. Gotta give it to this VA doing both characters at the same time.
