Growing up in Chicago, records like this were common. As a young teenager I would go to the five and dime {Woolworth's) and buy sealed packages of 45 RPMs that were in the bins in the front of the store. Gene Chandler, Betty Everett, Jerry Butler, Fred Hughes and others as well as pop and rock artists the Beatles and the Four Seasons. Vee-Jay records was a treasure although at the time I didn't know it. I was surprised to find out much later that a lot of Chicago music (as well as New Orleans and other locales) were treasured by Northern Brits and that there was a club scene as well and that outside of Chicago many of these recordings were relatively unknown. Recordings on Vee-Jay are among the best soul sides ever recorded (along with Brunswick and Chess). It seems most were CRIMINALLY underrated at the time. Thanks for the memory brico.
Criminally underrated, yes . Such a hotbed of talent .. and WOW , id love to visit NY, Detroit, Chicago, LA, New Orleans .. just to experience it. America .. Soul music , particularly on the Northern side - the diversity that comes under that banner is utterly extraordinary. If you took, say Detroit 1966 .. just as one small example .. its like every other guy , or girl was making a record - must have been cos its endless, endless. A literal goldmine. Diamond 💎. Gil Scott Heron, James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder ( and ive left out obvious and equally exceptional Artists) - Endless raw talent . I’m a soul music fanatic - used to go to the 100 club (6T’s) in the 80’s and other allnighters. Northern soul is an extraordinary phenomena of English culture, absolutely awesome scene.
