Your Ariel game sounds like a game me, my brother, and my uncle used to play when I was about 5. He didn't come over often but when he did we would go downstairs and run around the pool table hiding under it and a bench from the monster (my uncle). If he caught us, he would put us under the side of the pool table and say it was a cage. My brother and I would have to rescue each other from the cage :)

I think Ursula's attempt to take the trident was more along the lines of getting even with him and humiliating him. Being able to take the trident where he had to give it up and turn into that ridiculous thing? It seemed more like she wanted to humiliate him rather than just take the trident. The trident was just kind of the symbol of the royal position I'd wager.
It'd be so cool if the sims made an underwater expansion pack and we got sea creatures and sims could be mermaids!
