  • Happy 4th of July everyone!
How to measure your Fa Jing. Like bricks are to an Iron Palm practitioner, you will see in this video what's needed to measure where you're at with your Fa Jing power.

    Killer video Steve!
I have seen both northern & southern schools of TCMA practicing this method. Some used softer flexible woods while others trained with heavy staffs of hardwood between 7-9 feet long. The staffs in question were anywhere from 1.5 inches tapering to 3/4 inch or 2 inches tapering to about an inch! DAMN!! Getting a *wave* action out of hardwood at that diameter and length can be brutal! Works you arms...and stances like nothing else!
I know little about these methods but what I saw was two fold. One method was just called *staff shaking* where you held the staff in various ways and in different stances and tried to get a wave/whipping action in it. It was done in front of you, to the sides, above your head, down low etc. One peculiarity of this method is that they varied the arms from being held right next to the body with elbows well bent to away from the body with arms almost fully straight. I was warned never to straighten(lock) the arms as it will hurt you joints and you must vary the training to get the full effect and keep the joints healthy. IIRC they also used Dit Da Jow after heavy training sessions.
The second method involved stepping and a sort of *technique work* while holding the staff. In other words trying to mimic the routes and techniques of the style with the heavy staff to develop power fajing right along the technique pathways of the style.
Lastly, I remember a xing-yi guy telling me that his teacher urged him to train the heavy staff/spear. He said..........working the long staff if how to really get power in this art and with out serious effort your xing-yi will never be what it could. Not at all surprising since the art developed from spear work!
I think this kind of training is (or at least was) considered somewhat restricted as at it sets you apart. 😀
    Happy 4th!

GFD472...Excellent post! Yes, I too have seen various ways of using the staff for Fa Jing training. Some better than others, and you're so right when you said, "Considered somewhat restricted as it sets you apart." It is these little "somewhat restricted" things that set us apart!

Agreed! Short breaking bricks in my opinion is best. Similar to Bruce Lee’s 1 inch punch. How much energy can you create in a small space? I’ve seen strong people break a break with no training. These same folks can’t short break a wooden board let alone a brick. This always goes back to intent. What are you training and why are you training. Are you training for art or are you training for martial. The health will always be a subset of the martial as it’s the Yang to the yin. The art is just an aerobics class you can do that anywhere. The choice is yours. Choose a teacher that matches your intent.

whpierce3...Wow, it all does go back to INTENT! But, you brought up something else that really matters, short breaking. You're right on the money with this style of breaking and it truly shows explosive power in a small space.
