Bready's back with the demonetized vidz Trigger Warnings: sexual assault, domestic violence, homelessness, transphobia, and homophobia I hope everything I discussed comes across respectfully and I love u
I actually cried a little when Hana saves baby Jesus, your dissection of these stories is so we'll made that it hits me as hard as watching the source material does, wonderful job
Fantastic video. You really did justice to one of my all time favourite movies - while bringing to light the social issues at its heart. I knew things were bad for addicts, LGBTQ folk, and women in Japan, but some of the statistics you dug up for this are downright horrifying.
Hey dude 👋 Totally agree on the statistics. Everytime I hear about the problems it has it feels like its grinding itself into the ground which is uh, not good. Hopefully with more people calling out it'll stop before it goes through a massive humanitarian crisis. 😕
BREADSWORD dude you are so chill I love your personality, it’s been a year and you still come back and comment back to him. I love that it shows that you really care, keep up the good work brother
I saw Tokyo Godfather before I came out as trans, and since then I've done surveys in neighborhoods about homelessness, done volunteer work and interviewed with various homeless people. I've seen and given the various prejudices of being a transwoman, from both of my parents and from others. And every time, I can recall this movie and the struggles it depicts. Even without having seen Tokyo Godfather for almost 7 years now, I can recall these scenes and mentally replay them and find how so much of my life's experiences and the injustices of it have been reflected in there. I'm glad there's a video that talks about it so meticulously. I'm 3 months late and this comment's going to be buried but thank you for everything you've done here.
It's because it is confusing, love. It could be clear, however, at times, Breadsword gets himself (and by extent us) lost. It is not your fault. Cheers.
Breadsword is the equivalent to that kid in high school English class that knows they can get a C without even trying so they don't take the time to edit, organized, and create structure in the essay so the end result is nice-sounding fluff That Could have been an A if it went through more revisions...
@@shocknawe and don't get me wrong I enjoy some fluff every now and then but as someone that minored in English it can be a little frustrating at times, that cupped with his intro saying "I'm really smart" which is the exact attitude of the aforementioned English student: in that they do not yet understand that people who are truly intelligent don't need to say it but that it is in fact something that can be seen on it's own merit when it is present.
Yeah, I dunno if I was smart enough to understand the beginning, BUT I feel like if I were to rewatch the beginning after the video it would become oh so clear. This dude's video essays are fun to rewatch from different angles. Like abstract art.
Mr. Breadsword You are to anime retrospectives what Ken Burns is to contemporary documentaries. You should be proud of this work you have gifted to everyone.
Anime and why breadsword is all you need. You unpack such complicated and adored artworks so well. It all just makes me inspired to feel the passion of satoshi's work again and again. Thank you for taking the time so shine a little light our way, you brilliant man.
The murder of Brianna Ghey was my final straw. I have gotten through two trans rememberences watching many video essays about my oppression and in trans spaces where we acknowledge those we lose in real time but I have finally broke. I’ve been in and out of dissociation and breakdowns because I didn’t let myself feel before because it was just to painful, so now I break and finally be genuinely upset. I came here because this video honestly almost more than any other reminds me that we deserve love, we deserve life, and we still receive it. That’s what Hana’s connection to love and subsequent saved life represents to me. Even though we are endlessly abused and hurt we still have love, even if we don’t know it. I hope Brianna knew she had love…we all fucking deserve it
oh you really went off with this one! with all honestly the closer I reached the end the more teary I got until your character analysis of Hana. I am a sucker for love and I do see it as the driving force to my everyday life so seeing a project around one of my favorite director and the themes of love in his work really hits hard. Thank you for making such amazing work and I hope you continue doing so
Alright, let me gush over you for a second. I already loved this movie, as well as Satoshi Kon's other works. But you bring up so many cultural and societal perspectives I didn't know about and it brings the whole film into a new light. It adds so much more depth and meaning beyond just good storytelling and cinematic devices, and I feel like I can better appreciate the work as it was meant to be seen. All I want to do is rewatch it now. Thank you so much, please, please keep making videos!
I didn’t think I would hear “God is the health bar,” and be EXTREMELY surprised and find new knowledge to a scene I didn’t take notice before. I’ve been waiting for this for so long, and so far, this is even better than I could’ve imagined. Thank you for your wonderful series on love and a new favorite director of mine!
Breadsword continues to be a one of the most captivating guys on this place. It such a joy watching a guy who is absolutely fascinated by what he's sharing and never comes off as a pretentious jerk who just wants to show how smart he is
That was absolutely beautiful and thorough. This is always an emotional movie to me, more than many, so I FELT a lot of the intentions of the themes of light and wind, but the analytical and whole of it escaped me. This is a fantastic breakdown of the themes, both anthropological and visual. Fantastic work!
I remember getting this movie as a gift for a friend of mine back in 2014 watching it has always been a Christmas / New year tradition of mine. Me and my friend have had our personal falling outs here and there but I'll always be thankful for the many nice things she's done. One of them being letting me have this
You got me so emotional when she started talking about Miyuki and her role, it spoke to me as a young woman growing up in our world today. This whole video was incredible and has so many layers to it, I'm always amazed at what you interpret from these films and the sheer amount of research that must go into making each video
BREADSWORD it’s just so damn perfect as a x-mas movie. It has a cast with a POV that is underrepresented so you get a fresh perspective on the season, embodies the values the holiday represents and it hits all sorts of emotional notes on point. I used to give the snarky response of “Die Hard is my favorite X-mas movie, aren’t I so clever?” until I sat back and watched this and it was like a Christmas present. And I do love looking at the comment section with other people stating this is their Christmas movie because irl nobody knows it around me until I explain it.
BREADSWORD On another note, the intro sequence u made for the video was brilliant. Not only was it a mix of “jazzy-goodness”, and it was incredibly soothing to listen to😌🎵
I just finished watching Tokyo Godfathers this evening, and afterwards your Byzantine and transcendent video essay. It’s 2023, early December and I’ve begun the Christmas season in the profoundest way, by being reminded of what matters, the only thing that does. No matter who, where or when you’re reading this, Merry Christmas and may you experience the fragile precious beauty of this fucked up world.
Tokyo Godfathers is without a doubt my favorite film of all time, and has been for many years. This video only makes me appreciate it more. Thanks man.
Holy shit. This is one of the greatest analysis videos I've seen in so long. Prior to this I had already loved to death Kon's works, but this made me appreciate it tenfold, the man was truly an artistic genius. I'm almost at a lost for words how beautiful this video was. Thank you.
when i thought i was done sobbing at the end and the baby's parents made a comment about making them the baby's godfathers and it hit me why its named tokyo godfathers and i started sobbing again and then the 3 magi being a foreshadowing hit me and the sobbing intensified i loved it so much it was so warm
I've always loved Kon's work, but have never been able to articulate exactly why. Your careful research, explanation, and presentation of themes presented in his films supply that articulation in such a way that allows me to discover his films all over again, bringing me to tears just as the first time I'd seen them. Thank you.
A youtuber that goes beyond the youtube medium. It makes me forget you are just doing this all alone, the research, writing, editing, voiceover and the rest. Bread, you are just getting started but you are already one of the greats. Keep it up you magnificent man, we'll be watching.
I've listened to a lot of your videos by now, and there's just something about your tone of voice, your delivery, that is unlike anything I've heard anywhere else. The hushed gentility of your soft tone that is at the same time overflowing with almost reverent passion has brought me to tears at least once every video. I don't typically start to cry when learning about cool wind factz, but I do when Breadsword narrates it. I'm very glad you're here. Thank you.
56:26 That has to be the most iconic anime song ever (the song itself, and its many interpretations in the medium, aka Eva), and only those who watch anime know it. Quite fitting for this series and their overarching theme.
I will never understand how you can make me cry, even when there is no reason to. I love this series and the poetic cadence of your voice and the way they both convey beautiful I dont even understand. Thank you 💕
Incredible video. I watched it fully without ever stopping or pausing. Incredible work,. you had me with teary eyes almost the whole way through. Thank you for making me think so much about my favorite Satoshi Kon work, i love you man, thanks for this.
I think you could argue this as one of the greatest anime movies of all time. I have never felt as much shifting emotions as I did watching it. Amazing video! I definitely picked up on some of the themes, but completely missed the role that light plays in the film. Thank you for making an amazing movie even better!
i keep coming back to this video. tokyo godfathers is one of my favorite movies ever, almost completely because of this video. the way you structure your videos is so smooth and easy to follow--as a writer myself, i really look up to you for how you structure your scripts. this video specifically is so well made and researched it blows me away every time i rewatch it and i just wanna say that your writing is incredible! ive never seen a video essay so effortlessly trail together so many points in a way that still comes to the conclusion you set out for in the end. i love this video a lot!!! thank you for inspiring me!
So I just finished the video, and man this series in particular gets me so emotional. I love how you bring so much historical and societal context into the pieces you talk about. I love how you capture the underlying themes with such profound clarity, and I love how this all builds up to the climax so eloquently. I love the idea that art is a reflection of reality and the pieces you cover always have some gleaming sliver of wisdom to take away into our own lives. You are without a doubt one of the best creators on the platform and you are doing a service to the world
Every time one of these videos comes out I have to watch the film first so it's not spoiled by the video. So, thanks for making such consistently good content that gets me to watch awesome movies.
Lets go! I love this series so much. I just want to say I deeply respect your wide palette of media/art influence. You are one of the few out their to include, and thus give equal respect to, both mainstream and obscure films (from multiple decades) and anime, and for that, I thank you.
You know what's funny? I was coming back from work, and thought "man, that guy who analyzed Satoshi Kon's work with his amazing editing skills hasn't uploaded a video in a while, wonder what happened to him". I arrive to my house and BAM, new video. I kid you not, maybe that was another synchronicity... Anyway, as always a brilliant analysis, the way you construct the discurse, the visuals and music has me in awe. I can see all the amount of work and heart you put in your videos. Tokyo Godfathers is one of my favorite movies ever, I have a little tradition to watch it every christmas morning. Thank you for the 57 minute ride, I immensely enjoyed it.
I am HOOKED on your channel! The annalysis and writing and reference and historical context are super on point and well researched. This series was especially touching and impactful, and your sensitivity and delivery are spectacular. Thank you so much.
This film always makes me cry.... this definitely made me cry. To be able to capture and explain all the historical and social elements in this love letter, things I only felt out of sympathy or because they were presented to me visually and had a first hand understanding of in this world already, ughhhh 💜 I was made homeless 5 years after first watching this film, this was my Gospel during those 3 years. Magnum opus
Thanks for making me almost cry like 10 times in this video!!!! Your writing is beautiful and the way you speak makes it even more so. Such a gentle voice talking about art and love... magnificent.
This is beautiful. This series has made me not only view the works of satoshi kon in a new light, but the message you take out of them fills me with joy, hope and a thrive to do good and better. I seriously thank you for this ❤
I can't tell you how much it makes me happy to see every time you upload another vid. You make me feel so full after watching these videos like my souls been final satisfied. We love you!!
My grandpa’s favorite song was fly me to the moon. He made a brass biplane to fit the music player. Turning the propeller click clacked until it stopped then the tiny clink of the closing song you choose for this video. My sisters and brothers played it so much it stopped working. I don’t know what happened to it but thank you for reminding me. As a kid, my grandpa was the closest I could fathom “God” to be like. I miss him.
This is spectacularly written! I genuinely think this may be my favorite video essay on the platform, and I've seen a LOT of them. The fact that I'm only now discovering this channel now is an actual crime, because your work and writing and editing style is absolutely incredible. I'm going to be sharing this with as many people as I can.
I love the vast collection of media you use in your videos. You never know what you'll see next, but you know it will have deep connections to what you are saying in that moment.
This is absolutely stunning. What a wonderful essay and what a wonder dive into Satoshi Kon's work. I'm glad I found your stuff! Thank you for such a brilliant piece. I'll look forward to more from your channel!
I love all your video essays but this one in particular makes me tear up everytime, thankyou for expressing and normalizing sensitivity in such a beautiful way
Tokyo Godfather was my first Satoshi Kon movie before I even knew who he was. I used to watch it constantly, and I always was left wanting more from the end, but as an adult I can appreciate it more. Thank you for giving me an hour more to appreciate this movie.
I can tell we'd disagree with each other on a LOT but your video essays are something spectacular. So fair and hopeful, so loving and understanding to all sides. Thank you.
I literally cried watching this. There are no words to describe the poetry of your videos, Bread. Your editing is magical and unlike anything else I've ever seen. You are a genre onto yourself, a full thesis on film theory. I adore your content; the effort and beauty you put into all your videos is something I can only wish to achieve. You speak of love and the divine, not realizing that your own work stands just as brightly, just as elevated. Please keep up for as long as your spirit allows you to, I will be more than glad to follow it.
I'm late to the party here, but this is an amazing video about one of my very favorite movies. Thank you for the insights on Light and Wind in this movie, and all of the cultural background.
After the wait and the updates on Patreon it all paid off as always! Thank you for your videos and your work. It is always a pleasure. You have my full support, Bread. The over 9,000 word script was beautifully put together. Keep the videos coming, however long you need!
This video is exactly what I could never put into words and say about this movie, the reason why it's my favorite film and why I love so much kon's work This video made cry so many time,it's just amazing I love it and I'm so glad that's real and I found it by coincidence
I still can’t get over how wonderful your analysis is- not to mention to topics! I love the way you handled Hana’s story, and it makes me so happy to see it told so well. Thank you!
Tokyo Godfathers is quite possibly my favorite movie of all time, and the amount of care you put into displaying exactly what makes it so special brought me to tears a few times, (which is no small feat lmao). Thank you for this and every other video you have made, you're an absolute delight.
I legit cried toward the end of this. Breadsword I have loved everything you've made but this in particular hit home a lot never stop doing what your doing
Your content always makes me feel like theres higher meaning, bready. Seriously, amazing script writing going on and Satoshi Kon's work is probably one of the coolest options to show it off. Keep it up man.
Thank you for this. Hearing you talk about love while very clearly being in love with the subject of love itself, is a gift that in turn makes me follow suit. You make the world a brighter place, even if only slightly so.
I love this movie, I used to go with my dad to Blockbuster (rip Blockbuster) Friday evening to get movies and snacks and we would have a marathon at home. We used to peruse the anime section & picked this up, it was awesome! Millennium Actress was another good one and many more
Every time you manage to surprise me and keep me glued to the screen from the start to the last second, I can't express how much I appriciate your work, you are my favorite writer, period.
The insight contained within your video essays is nothing short of passion. Or, rather love. But passion i feel reflects both love and strife equally in your endeavor. A week ago i found your channel. I'm already rewatching your videos. You literally had me welling up with tears during this one. You are an amazing writer and storyteller. I'm looking forward to the completion of this series and whatever projects you decide to take on in the future.
Tears, you brought me to tears at many points in this video. Sadness and happiness mixed together. I deeply love this film. My Christmas film that I watch every year, since my discovery of it. I couldn't imagine I could love it more, but your words have made me fall in love again twice over. Thank you and I can't wait till the next video
Forgot to comment last night, but as soon as I saw the notification for this I dropped everything while out with friends and scrambled to get some quiet in order to begin watching this. Wonderful as always. Love you, DoughBlade.
I love this movie. Gave me some of the best laugh's I've ever had. While also tugging at my heart strings. I love the trio and their whole misadventure was unforgettable 😂❤
I'm a newfound convert of your channel, but dear god are the video's utterly beautiful. You sir, have a talent. This series, and all your others, truly make me feel in a way that I don't feel often in entertainment. Please don't stop sharing these with us, it's people like you that show the beauty of the world for what it is, and what it can be. Thanks for sharing, can't wait for more
I didn't realise how much I needed this episode. The way you dissect these brilliant movies moves me in a way I thought was possible in my dreams. Thank you so much and I can't wait for more content!

Can we talk about the character expressions in Tokyo Godfathers? You don't always get acting like these in any other anime except Cowboy Bebop.
Ikr?
Satoshi kon and hiroyuki okiura's expressive faces are siperb
Studio Ghibli is up with them too, like Takahata's Only Yesterday for example😁

Christmas is not Christmas for me if I don’t watch Tokyo Godfathers (followed by Hogfather).
I usually watch eyes wide shut
I always suggest this one for Christmas movies too. I think that honestly in a way it captures the Christmas Spirit in a way most other movies don't

i keep coming back to this video. tokyo godfathers is one of my favorite movies ever, almost completely because of this video. the way you structure your videos is so smooth and easy to follow--as a writer myself, i really look up to you for how you structure your scripts. this video specifically is so well made and researched it blows me away every time i rewatch it and i just wanna say that your writing is incredible! ive never seen a video essay so effortlessly trail together so many points in a way that still comes to the conclusion you set out for in the end. i love this video a lot!!! thank you for inspiring me!

These videos are like a warm hug from a loved one when you’ve had a bad day
I am HOOKED on your channel! The annalysis and writing and reference and historical context are super on point and well researched. This series was especially touching and impactful, and your sensitivity and delivery are spectacular. Thank you so much.
kon would be so proud of you and ur work
This film always makes me cry.... this definitely made me cry.
To be able to capture and explain all the historical and social elements in this love letter, things I only felt out of sympathy or because they were presented to me visually and had a first hand understanding of in this world already, ughhhh 💜
I was made homeless 5 years after first watching this film, this was my Gospel during those 3 years. Magnum opus
Hope you comeback with more from the series. Your Praprika one will be amazing!

Couldn't have said it better myself
Wow, Mr.Breadsword. I am floored by your essays. There's a lot humanity in your commentary about man's inhumanity to man.
Came back to your Satoshi Kon series for some comfort. Where ever you are just know you're goated.
The time has come, and I'm extremely happy, thank you Breadsword lov you bro
LOVE YOU TOO BRO BIG HEARTS FROM ME 2 U
Finally watching this after watching Tokyo godfathers for the first time ! Will update at the end of the video ❤
I cried a lot.
Thank you for this, I appreciate that I can reflect and understand this film better. It's beautiful and will always be with me.
I miss him.
God damn it man. You never cease to amaze me. No way you're at the bottom of the tier list of film analysists.
Thank you.
i just watched all three of these bad boys in a row again tonight. i love them and you so much. thanks for sharing with all of us
I literally cried watching this.
I'm so so so grateful!!! Thank you!
This video is exactly what I could never put into words and say about this movie, the reason why it's my favorite film and why I love so much kon's work
This video made cry so many time,it's just amazing I love it and I'm so glad that's real and I found it by coincidence
congratulations you made me cry over an absolutely beautiful analysis of this movie
I still can’t get over how wonderful your analysis is- not to mention to topics!
I love the way you handled Hana’s story, and it makes me so happy to see it told so well.
Thank you!
Just got finished watching this amazing movie again!
Tokyo Godfathers is quite possibly my favorite movie of all time, and the amount of care you put into displaying exactly what makes it so special brought me to tears a few times, (which is no small feat lmao). Thank you for this and every other video you have made, you're an absolute delight.
These videos rekindle my passion for film every time.
I legit cried toward the end of this. Breadsword I have loved everything you've made but this in particular hit home a lot never stop doing what your doing
I knew there was a reason that was my favorite of all his movies
I straight up started crying while you were describing Hana's fall and rescue. This is genuinely the best essay I've ever seen.
Some dude shared this on Discord and I don't know who you are or who Satoshi Kon is but I love you and everything here
Saw this in my notifications and I audibly screamed “YESSSSS” in my house. Love all of your stuff, keep making.
I’ve been rewatching all your stuff lately and I forgot how much I love this one
Hitting me hard on a Thursday night, but I forgive you because this video is fantastic. Peace and Love, keep up the good work bruv.
This man has a way with words that only someone with a better way with words could describe. You're really amazing Bread.
😭 Im always moved to tears by your videos . Thank you !
Wow, that was beautiful. Im almost in tears. Thanks man for the video
Forgot to comment last night, but as soon as I saw the notification for this I dropped everything while out with friends and scrambled to get some quiet in order to begin watching this. Wonderful as always. Love you, DoughBlade.

Please don't stop sharing these with us, it's people like you that show the beauty of the world for what it is, and what it can be. Thanks for sharing, can't wait for more
