i got a knot in my throat listening to this cuz it felt like they were telling my story. my mom grew up poor cuz her dad died in a heavy equipment accident when she was young and the big company he worked for did nothing to help his family. my grandmother worked 2 or more jobs at a time to raise her kids. my grandma was still dirt poor when i was a kid. i remember spending weekends in the summer where we went around picking up cans or catching lizards or frogs. we thought it was like a game but it was actually my grandma trying to make ends meet. so i feel this in my heart and i hope one day things get better for everyone not just the rich and ppl fortunate enough to be born to rich parents.

The whole system of helping people in America is flawed at its roots. I grew up in an abusive home: raped, beaten, starved and even had my life threatened at gun point, but no one took my cries for help seriously and the only thing that pulled me out of that environment was running away. I struggled living on my own. By age 22 I'd been homeless 3 times. Shortly after that I filed for bankruptcy because I owed more money in medical bills than I could ever make in a lifetime. I had a friend who gave me her car when her parents gifted her a brand new Mercedez for graduating college. I wasn't lucky enough to even have parents who cared enough about me to bother to see me in the hospital when I almost died, nor help me get a car. Because I owned a used Toyota my friend gave me, I was denied financial assistance like food stamps. I had become too sick to work, but I kept working because I couldn't afford to stop working for 6 months just so I could even apply for disability. My illness kept getting me fired because every time I got a new job, I could never last long enough to get past the first 2 months when I could be fired over anything. Even if I made it that long, I would still miss work because I needed repeated hospitalization. Even if I didn't get fired, I couldn't afford to miss days off work when I was only making $7 or $8 an hour. When you are born into a bad situation, not only does the government fail to help, even when they do, it's not enough. I went to school and worked 2 jobs. One of them was under the table, because if the government knew about it, I would have lost the grants I got for tuition. What kind of system punishes the poor if they take a 2nd job to try to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps". The system doesn't help the poor get out of poverty, it helps keep them there. Throughout all this, I was suffering from PTSD from the years of abuse I lived through as a child. I would relive horrific events in my nightmares... going to school, working 2 jobs... and still being told I was lazy. I didn't do enough. On a good night, I would manage to get 3 hours of sleep. I struggled to get continued medical care. I had not one family member helping me. It's not that I wasn't trying. It was impossible to get out of poverty on my own. And this is happening all over the country to thousands of people. The system is flawed.
What kind of system? A repiglican system. Punishing the poor for their poverty is blood sport for these mother fuckers. They take a particular delight in it.

I would like everyone in the governing bodies to spend 3months or more living the lives of many in poverty. Working the jobs many of these people do to provide for their families! No shelter, food, medical in many cases of the working poor!
Anyone could endure 3 months of it, knowing it'll end soon. Won't even stress them out. Roll a dice, make it 1-6 years, and keep the number hidden until "release". That might do it. Once it's over, they'll still have all their rich and influental friends and wealth to get back to, so it really doesn't compare anyways - that's a security and comfort poor people don't have. The intense look of concern on my dr's face did not match my view of the odd symptoms. When the test results started coming in, I was brought to my knees. Within a short time, the odd symptoms exploded and we were literally told to plan my funeral. My professional income was reduced to a meager disability income which is too high for me to qualify for SNAP benefits. I am not a drug addict, alcoholic, or mentally ill. I am poor due to a horrific disease that was complicated by other conditions added to it by a weakened immune system. Poverty is real.

I have only made $9000 in a year one time, I average $6000 to $7000 a year. So, I started going to school, and as soon as i did, they took way my food stamps, because they said that in order to keep my food stamps as a student, I would have to also work 30 hours a week. I can barely get my homework completed as it is and nearly half of my assignments are usually late. I still get mostly A's and B's, because fortunately my assignments are so above and beyond most of my fellow classmates that they let me slide a bit. Even late, I never rush an assignment, I put everything I have in me in every assignment while my family struggles. I am 44 and living at home, basically a burden to my parents who find it harder and harder to support me in this endeavor. I am in my sixth year of schooling, having attended Blue Mountain Community College for three years, and embarrassingly I still need just a single credit of P.E. to earn my AAOT. I have spent another three years at Eastern Oregon University where I am about six classes away from earning bachelor of science, it is a double major Anthropology and Sociology with an emphasis on Anthropology , and a minor in Native American Studies. Losing the food stamps stung.

Some. Its a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology/Sociology with a concentration on Anthropology, and a minor in Native American Studies. Also in community college, I took every class they had of several sciences, making me a Geology, Geography, & Anthropology major. I have wanted to be an Archaeologist my whole life, and living in a rural area I would likely have to move pretty far away to get a job, but I live on a reservation, and have most of my life despite being non-Native, and they have had job openings for Anthropologists and Archaeologists for over a half decade, perhaps longer. I can look out my window and see the building where I would work. I am in my 6th year of school, so my grants have just run out, and I still need about two more terms to get my bachelor's which is more of a passion rather than a financial investment, so I do need to find additional funding, but there are not as many scholarships for a single, 44 year-old male student, with no kids, who is not Native, a veteran, or a young athlete. Though I will not be qualified for the Archaeologist position until I have attained a masters and have attended a field archaeology school, I am qualified for this tribe's Oral Tradition Story Recorder position which I may apply for in a month or two to pay for my continuing education. At the lower end of the pay range for the Archaeologist position with a masters by this tribe is like $33,000 to $55,000 which I know is not much, but with my average income usually around $6000 before I started school with a peak annual income of $9000 one time, it is a fortune to me, even after the school loans take their cut.
This few minutes of listening gave my hopes and prayers that we are in the dawning of a new age, where true human concern leaves behind the greed and hate of times past. It's so inspiring to hear the kind support and agreement among our people.

I come from a decently well off family, and right now I dont make as much money as my parents made when they were my age, and its important for people in our elected office to know either first hand or read about what its like to care about where a next pay check is. My friend Dave in his late 50's to early 60's and has been homeless a lot of his life. Sometimes he would panhandle and "fly a flag." Homeless-speak for holding up a cardboard sign. His sign however had no words written on it. People would pull up and ask, "What does your sign say?" He would reply, "It doesn't say anything." "Why not," they would press? "Because I'm illiterate." They would usually donate pretty well after that.

The Foster Care system is a joke. My ex wife grew up in the system. She now holds a masters degree as a Clinical Social Worker, but suffers from the trauma she lived through. She will tell you the system is broken. Every single one of her 6 Foster Care sisters have never went higher than a high school diploma, and every one of them has had their parental rights revoked because they never learn to live on their own before having kids. This is because they are basically thrown to the streets while they are still children. The system should pay all college expenses, and pay Foster Parents for kids in college until age 25 when people's brains are fully developed. The world for most of these kids is beyond what most people could possibly comprehend. It is not their fault.

We can even offer billions in pandemic relief to corporations, based in other countries, who dont even file taxes in the US, but show billion dollar profits from selling IN the US. But when it comes to getting an entire society, into a warm and safe home, with food?... Nada. Here is a few crumbs, hurry up and die bitch, you're taking up space money could be made from. I have spent my entire life working. You may be driving on a road I helped to build. Or maybe a bridge I turned a wrench on. I'm a straight up blue collar worker. I worked my ass off, (litterally.. I have no ass.. Ask anyone) But here today, as I type this, I stare into the unknown. A place I thought i would die in, was sold out from under me. Because I couldn't afford to buy it. As someone who is on disability but also working this whole mean strikes me very much. I think one of the biggest things that needs to be talked about in our government is something called the cliff effect. That is probably one of the biggest reasons why people can't get out of poverty. I would suggest go looking it up and finding out exactly what it is.

Most of the people currently in power are wealthy. Instead of "sharing the wealth" as they did in the '50s and 60s, understanding that this will advance the economic wellness of ALL. We have generations of people on welfare who are supported by the middle class, not the upper class. Tax cuts for the rich hurt everyone. Will we, as a nation, continue to allow this? Or will we stand up and vote out the "good 'ol boys" who have brought this nation to its knees? Eliminate the candidate's ability to accumulate war chests. Each candidate receives "x" amount of money to use for their campaign. No private donors, no self/family donors, nothing that gives one candidate an advantage over another. Shorten campaign time to 4 months. Require that primaries feature ALL candidates (voters will not have to designate a party, they can vote for the best candidates regardless of party affiliation). Shorten the number of times a person may run for office. Eliminate elected candidate movement by not allowing "career" candidates, public "servants" for more than one federal (may run for POTUS) or state (may run for governor) position. This will ensure that no elected man or woman will be a career politician. It will be harder for special interest groups/lobbyist to have an elected official "in their pocket" thus controlling government. Finally, limit the number of items, that may be on a bill, to 10 or fewer. This "I'll scratch your back, you can scratch mine" policy needs to GO. No one can possibly read the entire submission as it is currently done. It is time the American people take back their country - a country where CEOs etc..., and government officials recognize that hoarding wealth benefits the few. Spreading the wealth invites everyone to share in the success, and it makes for a stronger economic growth and development.

i got a knot in my throat listening to this cuz it felt like they were telling my story. my mom grew up poor cuz her dad died in a heavy equipment accident when she was young and the big company he worked for did nothing to help his family. my grandmother worked 2 or more jobs at a time to raise her kids. my grandma was still dirt poor when i was a kid. i remember spending weekends in the summer where we went around picking up cans or catching lizards or frogs. we thought it was like a game but it was actually my grandma trying to make ends meet. so i feel this in my heart and i hope one day things get better for everyone not just the rich and ppl fortunate enough to be born to rich parents.

The whole system of helping people in America is flawed at its roots. I grew up in an abusive home: raped, beaten, starved and even had my life threatened at gun point, but no one took my cries for help seriously and the only thing that pulled me out of that environment was running away. I struggled living on my own. By age 22 I'd been homeless 3 times. Shortly after that I filed for bankruptcy because I owed more money in medical bills than I could ever make in a lifetime. I had a friend who gave me her car when her parents gifted her a brand new Mercedez for graduating college. I wasn't lucky enough to even have parents who cared enough about me to bother to see me in the hospital when I almost died, nor help me get a car. Because I owned a used Toyota my friend gave me, I was denied financial assistance like food stamps. I had become too sick to work, but I kept working because I couldn't afford to stop working for 6 months just so I could even apply for disability. My illness kept getting me fired because every time I got a new job, I could never last long enough to get past the first 2 months when I could be fired over anything. Even if I made it that long, I would still miss work because I needed repeated hospitalization. Even if I didn't get fired, I couldn't afford to miss days off work when I was only making $7 or $8 an hour. When you are born into a bad situation, not only does the government fail to help, even when they do, it's not enough. I went to school and worked 2 jobs. One of them was under the table, because if the government knew about it, I would have lost the grants I got for tuition. What kind of system punishes the poor if they take a 2nd job to try to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps". The system doesn't help the poor get out of poverty, it helps keep them there. Throughout all this, I was suffering from PTSD from the years of abuse I lived through as a child. I would relive horrific events in my nightmares... going to school, working 2 jobs... and still being told I was lazy. I didn't do enough. On a good night, I would manage to get 3 hours of sleep. I struggled to get continued medical care. I had not one family member helping me. It's not that I wasn't trying. It was impossible to get out of poverty on my own. And this is happening all over the country to thousands of people. The system is flawed.
What kind of system? A repiglican system. Punishing the poor for their poverty is blood sport for these mother fuckers. They take a particular delight in it.

I would like everyone in the governing bodies to spend 3months or more living the lives of many in poverty. Working the jobs many of these people do to provide for their families! No shelter, food, medical in many cases of the working poor!
You should have to have a year in the service industry to run for office. No exemptions.
Anyone could endure 3 months of it, knowing it'll end soon. Won't even stress them out. Roll a dice, make it 1-6 years, and keep the number hidden until "release". That might do it. Once it's over, they'll still have all their rich and influental friends and wealth to get back to, so it really doesn't compare anyways - that's a security and comfort poor people don't have.
Make the salary of anyone in the governing body equal to the median income of the country, and outlaw bribery. Would be much more efficient for raising economic standards for everyone.

The intense look of concern on my dr's face did not match my view of the odd symptoms. When the test results started coming in, I was brought to my knees. Within a short time, the odd symptoms exploded and we were literally told to plan my funeral. My professional income was reduced to a meager disability income which is too high for me to qualify for SNAP benefits. I am not a drug addict, alcoholic, or mentally ill. I am poor due to a horrific disease that was complicated by other conditions added to it by a weakened immune system. Poverty is real.

I have only made $9000 in a year one time, I average $6000 to $7000 a year. So, I started going to school, and as soon as i did, they took way my food stamps, because they said that in order to keep my food stamps as a student, I would have to also work 30 hours a week. I can barely get my homework completed as it is and nearly half of my assignments are usually late. I still get mostly A's and B's, because fortunately my assignments are so above and beyond most of my fellow classmates that they let me slide a bit. Even late, I never rush an assignment, I put everything I have in me in every assignment while my family struggles. I am 44 and living at home, basically a burden to my parents who find it harder and harder to support me in this endeavor.
I am in my sixth year of schooling, having attended Blue Mountain Community College for three years, and embarrassingly I still need just a single credit of P.E. to earn my AAOT. I have spent another three years at Eastern Oregon University where I am about six classes away from earning bachelor of science, it is a double major Anthropology and Sociology with an emphasis on Anthropology , and a minor in Native American Studies. Losing the food stamps stung.
The system is set up to punish those who try to improve their lot, whether by accident or design.

Some. Its a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology/Sociology with a concentration on Anthropology, and a minor in Native American Studies. Also in community college, I took every class they had of several sciences, making me a Geology, Geography, & Anthropology major. I have wanted to be an Archaeologist my whole life, and living in a rural area I would likely have to move pretty far away to get a job, but I live on a reservation, and have most of my life despite being non-Native, and they have had job openings for Anthropologists and Archaeologists for over a half decade, perhaps longer. I can look out my window and see the building where I would work. I am in my 6th year of school, so my grants have just run out, and I still need about two more terms to get my bachelor's which is more of a passion rather than a financial investment, so I do need to find additional funding, but there are not as many scholarships for a single, 44 year-old male student, with no kids, who is not Native, a veteran, or a young athlete. Though I will not be qualified for the Archaeologist position until I have attained a masters and have attended a field archaeology school, I am qualified for this tribe's Oral Tradition Story Recorder position which I may apply for in a month or two to pay for my continuing education. At the lower end of the pay range for the Archaeologist position with a masters by this tribe is like $33,000 to $55,000 which I know is not much, but with my average income usually around $6000 before I started school with a peak annual income of $9000 one time, it is a fortune to me, even after the school loans take their cut.
This few minutes of listening gave my hopes and prayers that we are in the dawning of a new age, where true human concern leaves behind the greed and hate of times past.

I come from a decently well off family, and right now I dont make as much money as my parents made when they were my age, and its important for people in our elected office to know either first hand or read about what its like to care about where a next pay check is. We need more business cooperatives because this top down system favors no one except those at the very top (some of whom frankly didn't even earn their way up, just a friend of a friend for some) at the expense of the fleet of workers below them. My friend Dave in his late 50's to early 60's and has been homeless a lot of his life. Sometimes he would panhandle and "fly a flag." Homeless-speak for holding up a cardboard sign. His sign however had no words written on it.

The Foster Care system is a joke. My ex wife grew up in the system. She now holds a masters degree as a Clinical Social Worker, but suffers from the trauma she lived through. She will tell you the system is broken. Every single one of her 6 Foster Care sisters have never went higher than a high school diploma, and every one of them has had their parental rights revoked because they never learn to live on their own before having kids. This is because they are basically thrown to the streets while they are still children. The system should pay all college expenses, and pay Foster Parents for kids in college until age 25 when people's brains are fully developed. The world for most of these kids is beyond what most people could possibly comprehend. It is not their fault.

I loved the talk. Its always good to hear our politicians talk about the problems people are having, their struggles.. misfortunes.. Here is my... issue, with listening to conversation. For 50 years, that is all I've seen happen. Lots of conversation... but NO ACTIONS. These conversations are not new. its why we vote for people we thought would be better representation. (I love AOC btw) But it just never quite seems to actually happen. We have tons of money for weapon development and wars. We have tons of money for space. (that I, nor anyone else I know will never be a part of or experience.) We want to colonize Mars. For, how much? We have lots of extra money to bail out corporations, other governments, start up companies... We can even offer billions in pandemic relief to corporations, based in other countries, who dont even file taxes in the US, but show billion dollar profits from selling IN the US. But when it comes to getting an entire society, into a warm and safe home, with food?... Nada. Here is a few crumbs, hurry up and die bitch, you're taking up space money could be made from. I have spent my entire life working. You may be driving on a road I helped to build. Or maybe a bridge I turned a wrench on. I'm a straight up blue collar worker. I worked my ass off, (litterally.. I have no ass.. Ask anyone) But here today, as I type this, I stare into the unknown. A place I thought i would die in, was sold out from under me. Because I couldn't afford to buy it. (Social security doesn't quite afford me the luxury of home ownership. Not these days.) So here I sit. Watching time go by, Cant afford to go anyplace. I cant afford a car to get there anyway. Cant afford any kind of decent cable package, or any other kind of entertainment. Im just waiting until I eventually end up on the street. Which could be any time next month. Im not sure which is worse. Actually being on the street, or waiting to be delivered to it. That's the difference between "living" and simply existing. Being homeless for me, will be a death sentence. I have no delusions about my ability to survive the jungle. OR just flat out commit some crime so I can go to jail and take my chances there. I just havent decided how desperate I want to cling to a life that Im not sure is worth living any more. Not like this. Im tired of trying to survive. As in exhausted tired. How much can be taken from a man before he breaks? Lets sit and talk about it some more until we all decide how much better we all feel. The rest of us will either be looking for rope (if we can afford it) and a solid tree.. or going to jail while you "discuss" it. Again.

As someone who is on disability but also working this whole mean strikes me very much. I think one of the biggest things that needs to be talked about in our government is something called the cliff effect. That is probably one of the biggest reasons why people can't get out of poverty. I would suggest go looking it up and finding out exactly what it is.
Blaming the poor is SHAME not being taken responsibility for by those with enough.

All of this is so true and so sad....and as many people commented below, I'm afraid the people really in charge of usa, the 1%, are not ready for any change and the poverty line is not going anywhere anytime soon (look at the last 20 years...it's just data). Minimum wage is not adjusted with inflation and who knows when it will. I am sad to say that I am very pessimistic about the future usa citizens.

Most of the people currently in power are wealthy. Instead of "sharing the wealth" as they did in the '50s and 60s, understanding that this will advance the economic wellness of ALL. We have generations of people on welfare who are supported by the middle class, not the upper class. Tax cuts for the rich hurt everyone. Will we, as a nation, continue to allow this? Or will we stand up and vote out the "good 'ol boys" who have brought this nation to its knees? Eliminate the candidate's ability to accumulate war chests. Each candidate receives "x" amount of money to use for their campaign. No private donors, no self/family donors, nothing that gives one candidate an advantage over another. Shorten campaign time to 4 months. Require that primaries feature ALL candidates (voters will not have to designate a party, they can vote for the best candidates regardless of party affiliation). Shorten the number of times a person may run for office. Eliminate elected candidate movement by not allowing "career" candidates, public "servants" for more than one federal (may run for POTUS) or state (may run for governor) position. This will ensure that no elected man or woman will be a career politician. It will be harder for special interest groups/lobbyist to have an elected official "in their pocket" thus controlling government. Finally, limit the number of items, that may be on a bill, to 10 or fewer. This "I'll scratch your back, you can scratch mine" policy needs to GO. No one can possibly read the entire submission as it is currently done. It is time the American people take back their country - a country where CEOs etc..., and government officials recognize that hoarding wealth benefits the few. Spreading the wealth invites everyone to share in the success, and it makes for a stronger economic growth and development.
