Roger Lindsay unfortunately, I do believe. Good thing there are as many good people as there are cantankerous naysayers who refuse to see anything outside their own worldview. Neither can some communicate in anything but insult and rhetoric. Oh well, the world turns and here’s hoping.
The whole system of helping people in America is flawed at its roots. I grew up in an abusive home: raped, beaten, starved and even had my life threatened at gun point, but no one took my cries for help seriously and the only thing that pulled me out of that environment was running away. I struggled living on my own. By age 22 I'd been homeless 3 times. Shortly after that I filed for bankruptcy because I owed more money in medical bills than I could ever make in a lifetime. I had a friend who gave me her car when her parents gifted her a brand new Mercedez for graduating college. I wasn't lucky enough to even have parents who cared enough about me to bother to see me in the hospital when I almost died, nor help me get a car. Because I owned a used Toyota my friend gave me, I was denied financial assistance like food stamps. I had become too sick to work, but I kept working because I couldn't afford to stop working for 6 months just so I could even apply for disability. My illness kept getting me fired because every time I got a new job, I could never last long enough to get past the first 2 months when I could be fired over anything. Even if I made it that long, I would still miss work because I needed repeated hospitalization. Even if I didn't get fired, I couldn't afford to miss days off work when I was only making $7 or $8 an hour. When you are born into a bad situation, not only does the government fail to help, even when they do, it's not enough. I went to school and worked 2 jobs. One of them was under the table, because if the government knew about it, I would have lost the grants I got for tuition. What kind of system punishes the poor if they take a 2nd job to try to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps". The system doesn't help the poor get out of poverty, it helps keep them there. Throughout all this, I was suffering from PTSD from the years of abuse I lived through as a child. I would relive horrific events in my nightmares... going to school, working 2 jobs... and still being told I was lazy. I didn't do enough. On a good night, I would manage to get 3 hours of sleep. I struggled to get continued medical care. I had not one family member helping me. It's not that I wasn't trying. It was impossible to get out of poverty on my own. And this is happening all over the country to thousands of people. The system is flawed.
What kind of system? A repiglican system. Punishing the poor for their poverty is blood sport for these mother fuckers. They take a particular delight in it.

I am so so sorry for what you had to go through you should’ve gotten the help you needed and the government wronged you I wish you the best for the future and I applaud your strength❤️
i got a knot in my throat listening to this cuz it felt like they were telling my story. my mom grew up poor cuz her dad died in a heavy equipment accident when she was young and the big company he worked for did nothing to help his family. my grandmother worked 2 or more jobs at a time to raise her kids. my grandma was still dirt poor when i was a kid. i remember spending weekends in the summer where we went around picking up cans or catching lizards or frogs. we thought it was like a game but it was actually my grandma trying to make ends meet. so i feel this in my heart and i hope one day things get better for everyone not just the rich and ppl fortunate enough to be born to rich parents.

I would like everyone in the governing bodies to spend 3months or more living the lives of many in poverty. Working the jobs many of these people do to provide for their families! No shelter, food, medical in many cases of the working poor!
Anyone could endure 3 months of it, knowing it'll end soon. Won't even stress them out. Roll a dice, make it 1-6 years, and keep the number hidden until "release". That might do it. Once it's over, they'll still have all their rich and influental friends and wealth to get back to, so it really doesn't compare anyways - that's a security and comfort poor people don't have. Make the salary of anyone in the governing body equal to the median income of the country, and outlaw bribery. Would be much more efficient for raising economic standards for everyone.
Darlene Shriver Gee maybe they shouldn’t of had children knowing they couldn’t afford them. Nobody in America is truly poor unless they are a drug addict or a alcoholic or both. And if they are mentally ill they need help but 99% of people that are broke in America did it to themself.

Within a short time, the odd symptoms exploded and we were literally told to plan my funeral. My professional income was reduced to a meager disability income which is too high for me to qualify for SNAP benefits. I am not a drug addict, alcoholic, or mentally ill. Wow. I come from a decently well off family, and right now I dont make as much money as my parents made when they were my age, and its important for people in our elected office to know either first hand or read about what its like to care about where a next pay check is. Otherwise they just dont understand, and they are on the other side with the ceo's taking billions from their front line workers. We need more business cooperatives because this top down system favors no one except those at the very top (some of whom frankly didn't even earn their way up, just a friend of a friend for some) at the expense of the fleet of workers below them. Finally this oligarchy is being seen for what it is and i'm not surprised its gotten this far because they ones are the top are slithery cretins who will NEVER spend their billions anyway.

Kenny B Do you mean the US being young and others to copy the US? Because on this stuff.., most of the developed world wouldn’t want to go back to the old systems that the US has.. Our social welfare systems are the best parts.., the very core of national identities and functionality, they are what allow us to proceed far more as a whole nation rather than oust winning as a 1% such as the US can be/ is. I’m not so sure that given the amount of global resources that the US has and takes.., that the US is doing ok..? Appears the US belief system can look down on the weakest nations, that have nothing but conflict n poor political situations as trump did and say “see we’re doing way better”, yeah ignore that the US that used to be a global leader.. is now slowly falling behind us.., in infrastructure, thinking, social equity, equality & justice, basic levels of health & healthcare across its communities.. people in outback Aussie are great better outcomes & peace of mind than some in NY... Ya can tell this by the noise coming out of each nation... Mass public rape.., for example is not a thing in in NZ or Aussie, UK, US?.. but it can be in places like India etc etc. And when I hear that diabetics can have to go without food to get their meds in the US..., set against a normal western/ developed 1st world standard..., that that happens at all is a huge red flag.. in the “the most powerful, global leader nation” the US.. is very much F that’s is an issue...... un believable. “What’s going in there & why”.. oh yeah they still haven’t got to basic human rights of that stuff
@@tigertiger1699 Those countries are none of our buisness unless a threat. Don't forget "feelings don't make the world go round". It's our balance of capitalist and socialist programs combined with the ability to adapt to unique situations that make this country the greatest. Agree or disagree but it is almost a necessary split. Regardless of source may it be tax the rich, tax all, individual, corporate, or even private.... someone has to pay.

But in some some many ways it is not the most modern/ developed/ infrastructured/ healthy/ kind/ tolerant etc etc. ya gota love the US.. but we’ve been hearing Americans spout this for years and the examples they use are Columbia, Honduras etc🤔. Yet your ex Pats here and in Aussie etc that I’ve worked with over decades.., say that they’ve had to give up their “American religion”, calm down, relax and one thing that we commonly hear is that they get to realise that the rest of the fn planet is not out to get em... Anyway, your life your nation, ever thankful to the US for helping n saving in ww2 etc etc etc.. But we don’t want to live in such a negative social view point as appears to dominate the US.. Btw, there fn plenty of $ in the US to have everyone there looked after and save by the lack of negative health outcomes.., $700bill on military is a joke.. more than twice the rest of the 🌏 combined..., wtf is that telling ya.., the rest of the planet gets by ok without it... to me it shows a mind set more than a need
My friend Dave in his late 50's to early 60's and has been homeless a lot of his life. Sometimes he would panhandle and "fly a flag." Homeless-speak for holding up a cardboard sign. They would usually donate pretty well after that.

The Foster Care system is a joke. My ex wife grew up in the system. She now holds a masters degree as a Clinical Social Worker, but suffers from the trauma she lived through. She will tell you the system is broken. Every single one of her 6 Foster Care sisters have never went higher than a high school diploma, and every one of them has had their parental rights revoked because they never learn to live on their own before having kids. This is because they are basically thrown to the streets while they are still children. The system should pay all college expenses, and pay Foster Parents for kids in college until age 25 when people's brains are fully developed. The world for most of these kids is beyond what most people could possibly comprehend. It is not their fault.

I have only made $9000 in a year one time, I average $6000 to $7000 a year. So, I started going to school, and as soon as i did, they took way my food stamps, because they said that in order to keep my food stamps as a student, I would have to also work 30 hours a week. I can barely get my homework completed as it is and nearly half of my assignments are usually late. I still get mostly A's and B's, because fortunately my assignments are so above and beyond most of my fellow classmates that they let me slide a bit. Even late, I never rush an assignment, I put everything I have in me in every assignment while my family struggles. I am 44 and living at home, basically a burden to my parents who find it harder and harder to support me in this endeavor. I am in my sixth year of schooling, having attended Blue Mountain Community College for three years, and embarrassingly I still need just a single credit of P.E. to earn my AAOT. I have spent another three years at Eastern Oregon University where I am about six classes away from earning bachelor of science, it is a double major Anthropology and Sociology with an emphasis on Anthropology , and a minor in Native American Studies. Losing the food stamps stung.
@@heartdragon2386 If that is true then the problem you describe is systemic. If the problem is wide-spread, then it is endemic. Some terms I learned in Sociology.
Some. Its a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology/Sociology with a concentration on Anthropology, and a minor in Native American Studies. Also in community college, I took every class they had of several sciences, making me a Geology, Geography, & Anthropology major. I have wanted to be an Archaeologist my whole life, and living in a rural area I would likely have to move pretty far away to get a job, but I live on a reservation, and have most of my life despite being non-Native, and they have had job openings for Anthropologists and Archaeologists for over a half decade, perhaps longer. I can look out my window and see the building where I would work. I am in my 6th year of school, so my grants have just run out, and I still need about two more terms to get my bachelor's which is more of a passion rather than a financial investment, so I do need to find additional funding, but there are not as many scholarships for a single, 44 year-old male student, with no kids, who is not Native, a veteran, or a young athlete. Though I will not be qualified for the Archaeologist position until I have attained a masters and have attended a field archaeology school, I am qualified for this tribe's Oral Tradition Story Recorder position which I may apply for in a month or two to pay for my continuing education. At the lower end of the pay range for the Archaeologist position with a masters by this tribe is like $33,000 to $55,000 which I know is not much, but with my average income usually around $6000 before I started school with a peak annual income of $9000 one time, it is a fortune to me, even after the school loans take their cut.
Thank you, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, for pointing out what HAS ALWAYS BEEN OBVIOUS to anyone who THINKS: no one can pull themselves up by their own bootstraps!
"A policy for the poor is a poor policy" it's been evident that it will require less to provide a basic income than running these welfare programs, which is sadly, unfortunately, ironically designed to be based on scrutiny on who deserves to be helped

I loved the talk. Its always good to hear our politicians talk about the problems people are having, their struggles.. misfortunes.. Here is my... issue, with listening to conversation. For 50 years, that is all I've seen happen. Lots of conversation... but NO ACTIONS. These conversations are not new. its why we vote for people we thought would be better representation. (I love AOC btw) But it just never quite seems to actually happen. We have tons of money for weapon development and wars. We have tons of money for space. (that I, nor anyone else I know will never be a part of or experience.) We want to colonize Mars. For, how much? We have lots of extra money to bail out corporations, other governments, start up companies... We can even offer billions in pandemic relief to corporations, based in other countries, who dont even file taxes in the US, but show billion dollar profits from selling IN the US. But when it comes to getting an entire society, into a warm and safe home, with food?... Nada. Here is a few crumbs, hurry up and die bitch, you're taking up space money could be made from. I have spent my entire life working. You may be driving on a road I helped to build. Or maybe a bridge I turned a wrench on. I'm a straight up blue collar worker. I worked my ass off, (litterally.. I have no ass.. Ask anyone) But here today, as I type this, I stare into the unknown. A place I thought i would die in, was sold out from under me. Because I couldn't afford to buy it. (Social security doesn't quite afford me the luxury of home ownership. Not these days.) So here I sit. Watching time go by, Cant afford to go anyplace. I cant afford a car to get there anyway. Cant afford any kind of decent cable package, or any other kind of entertainment. Im just waiting until I eventually end up on the street. Which could be any time next month. Im not sure which is worse. Actually being on the street, or waiting to be delivered to it. That's the difference between "living" and simply existing. Being homeless for me, will be a death sentence. I have no delusions about my ability to survive the jungle. OR just flat out commit some crime so I can go to jail and take my chances there. I just havent decided how desperate I want to cling to a life that Im not sure is worth living any more. Not like this. Im tired of trying to survive. As in exhausted tired. How much can be taken from a man before he breaks? Lets sit and talk about it some more until we all decide how much better we all feel. The rest of us will either be looking for rope (if we can afford it) and a solid tree.. or going to jail while you "discuss" it. Again.
We the people need to stand up to the greed of gluttonous companies. No more tax cuts for them, a flat tax for all over one million dollars and more, because it's the right thing to do for all Americans. For humanity.
Many exhaust energy providing details of a crises to deaf ears. Feeling compelled to argue for human rights means that the deaf ears are the problem. The problem is that anyone can be voted into office. Rep. As someone who is on disability but also working this whole mean strikes me very much. I think one of the biggest things that needs to be talked about in our government is something called the cliff effect. That is probably one of the biggest reasons why people can't get out of poverty. I would suggest go looking it up and finding out exactly what it is.
Most of the people currently in power are wealthy. Instead of "sharing the wealth" as they did in the '50s and 60s, understanding that this will advance the economic wellness of ALL. We have generations of people on welfare who are supported by the middle class, not the upper class. Tax cuts for the rich hurt everyone. Will we, as a nation, continue to allow this? Or will we stand up and vote out the "good 'ol boys" who have brought this nation to its knees? Eliminate the candidate's ability to accumulate war chests. Each candidate receives "x" amount of money to use for their campaign. No private donors, no self/family donors, nothing that gives one candidate an advantage over another. Shorten campaign time to 4 months. Require that primaries feature ALL candidates (voters will not have to designate a party, they can vote for the best candidates regardless of party affiliation). Shorten the number of times a person may run for office. Eliminate elected candidate movement by not allowing "career" candidates, public "servants" for more than one federal (may run for POTUS) or state (may run for governor) position. This will ensure that no elected man or woman will be a career politician. It will be harder for special interest groups/lobbyist to have an elected official "in their pocket" thus controlling government. Finally, limit the number of items, that may be on a bill, to 10 or fewer. This "I'll scratch your back, you can scratch mine" policy needs to GO. No one can possibly read the entire submission as it is currently done. It is time the American people take back their country - a country where CEOs etc..., and government officials recognize that hoarding wealth benefits the few. Spreading the wealth invites everyone to share in the success, and it makes for a stronger economic growth and development.

I wish you all the best, friend.

Thanks for sharing and I hope you're doing better today. Keep sharing your story with anyone who will listen, and try even with those who won't.
i got a knot in my throat listening to this cuz it felt like they were telling my story. my mom grew up poor cuz her dad died in a heavy equipment accident when she was young and the big company he worked for did nothing to help his family. my grandmother worked 2 or more jobs at a time to raise her kids. my grandma was still dirt poor when i was a kid. i remember spending weekends in the summer where we went around picking up cans or catching lizards or frogs. we thought it was like a game but it was actually my grandma trying to make ends meet. so i feel this in my heart and i hope one day things get better for everyone not just the rich and ppl fortunate enough to be born to rich parents.

You should have to have a year in the service industry to run for office. No exemptions.

“Are we one nation indivisible under god? Because if we are, then we help each other.” And that’s the foundation of socialism. We’re a society & if we want to live in a better world we have to take care of ALL of us.

Is it that the lie of American dream?, is the lies they’ve been feed re US exceptionalism .., I sincerely hope the US can pull universal healthcare out of this election.., I doubt it... but wouldn’t it be great for the US to joint the rest of us ... in just one extremely important way..🌹🇺🇸 imagine who the US could be if it chose that....
@@tigertiger1699 We are doing just fine my friend. When you're this young and on top other countries should copy you, not the other way around.
Kenny B
Do you mean the US being young and others to copy the US?
Kenny B
Kenny I’m unsure how to respond to that?
Where do feelings come into it?, I suppose from this wallet based thinking this “rarity of $ resources in the US”..., that the population have been feed.., what the western world is proposing to the US is to change its ways.. & it’s healthcare model.. to a/ systems/ models that will cost roughly half of your current.., allow you as a nation to have everyone and anyone being seen n treated etc etc by first world.., doctors n hospitals and a nation that doesn’t have/ need to large blocks of it going without and then the extra costs there.. blah blah, that the US does copy the bulk of the developed world shows a major issue for it.. costs half yet you get 10 times more for ya $🤔 but the US says no🤔.
By the way👍😀 who the hell told/ convinced etc the “US” that it’s “the greatest”??, I mean in what way/s, the US as with any nation is a leader in some stuff👍👍, but😬
It might have been in many ways.. in 1901 when it sent it’s great white fleet are on an RnR invite..👍, with orders to look at taking NZ🇳🇿.., or at the end of ww2..
Thank you all❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

My friend Dave in his late 50's to early 60's and has been homeless a lot of his life. Sometimes he would panhandle and "fly a flag." Homeless-speak for holding up a cardboard sign. His sign however had no words written on it.
People would pull up and ask, "What does your sign say?"
He would reply, "It doesn't say anything."
"Why not," they would press?
"Because I'm illiterate."
They would usually donate pretty well after that.

Ms. Hutchinson, thank you for your service.
People who get rich from good ideas and effort are to be applauded but... super rich and "elites" who have scammed their employees need to be "lifted" off their government welfare and forced to pay living wages and their fair share of tax. As for corporations that shit needs to be shut down... given the rights of a human but without empathy and rewarded for all the negative psychopathies...disgusting!!
You can get rich from effort and ideas (if you also have a big dollop of luck), but you cannot get 1% wealthy without exploitation of some sort.
Everyone pays taxes because of the IRS and if they didn't the IRS would sue creating the records to become public..

The system is set up to punish those who try to improve their lot, whether by accident or design.
@@heartdragon2386 If that is true then the problem you describe is systemic. If the problem is wide-spread, then it is endemic. Some terms I learned in Sociology.
Neither of those fields pay that well, did you do a cost benefit analysis for your degree?

Again.

If anyone knows which hearing this was please tell me where on TH-cam it is! I've been searching!
We the people need to stand up to the greed of gluttonous companies. No more tax cuts for them, a flat tax for all over one million dollars and more, because it's the right thing to do for all Americans. For humanity.
She just gets better and better.
Many exhaust energy providing details of a crises to deaf ears. Feeling compelled to argue for human rights means that the deaf ears are the problem. The problem is that anyone can be voted into office. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez should figure out how to use her intelligence and humanity towards amending policy to implement basic requirements in running for office. These basic requirements shall come with strict and painful consequences, spelled out, for violators.
1983 rate per hour for a Craftsman in the USA was $20:00
2020 the rate is $ 50:00
Purchase power of the mighty $1983
20, 350ml coffee
2020 buying power
Coffee 2 cups maybe.

Si much truth, hardship, reality. I wonder how many Republican leaders were seated there listening? Have any improvements been made since?
AOC for president!!!
Why does this look as if it were recorded in the 1990's?
CSPAN. 😂😂😂
Because our government hasn't improved a single thing since then, including infrastructure
Well said!!!!!!!
it's like a patient that goes to the doctor and if that patient not recognized that are sick the doctor was unable to heal it ... look the half cure from someone who is disease its the patient himself reconized that are sick and need help to be a treat and be cure ...

It is lip service until something changes for the better.
VERY COOL - LOVE YOU AOC
I lifted myself out of the same crap she talks about I put myself through college and am now debt free. Why because I stayed away from government assistance- it’s a trap
Good for you. You're a real pioneer. We ALL PAY for our government; it is there to help us when we need it. There is no shame in this. You think the wealthy aren't helping each other? Hah. They get all the help they need. From the same government. Do they seem ashamed to you?
@@davidowens5898 you seriously need to take his advice government assistance is a trap it keeps u poor
Government food stamps, healthcare etc actually makes things more expensive
You should know the government is a irresponsible spender something you could buy for $10 at auto zone the military will pay 30 or 40 dollars for it government assistance makes people poor because it wastes money
I remember that it was the same in scotland
So based on Chairman Connolly's testimony about the Irish community - the Irish should understand slavery and discrimination.
Thanks Cortez😅😊😊
Thank you.
Try making $15.00 an hr in NYC !
15 dollars an hour in NYC IS ridiculous! Unions are needed. $30. an hour is far more realistic. Businesses who position themselves to make high profits need to pay their workers a share of it? Great profit should be rewarded proportionately in return. How about requiring a company to invest a certain % of the profits in employee wages?
@@marionlyon7349 Your right, sounds like a plan ! The unfortunate scenario is, it's all by design ! Keep the people poor, and have them get on welfare so the government can dictate to the recipients, it's a form of control.
Do y’all even know why it’s so expensive in NYC? … you’ll never know the reason why
@@stayswervin554 If you know, tell me.
And thank you Sir
Love these Democrats.
Gov sure lifted AOC out of poverty!
I hope more like her get elected this year. We must get rid of these timid little donkeys that are doing nothing for real people!
It's binteresting to learn
WE GIVE A SOCIALIST WELFARE TO 1 PERCENT TAX BREAK AND PAY NO TAX UT USE OUR TAX MONEY WE PAY BUT THE POOR ARE LABEL BAD SO ATTACK YOU MAKING IT WORSE BY PUNISHING THEM TAKING WHAT LITTLE HELP THEY GET
I started laughing when she started talking about how its physically impossible lifting yourself off the bootstraps lol 😁😁😆😆🤣
I like the quote "taking the boot off of people's throats", as that is how our society is right now on the middle and lower class.
To hear him give the history of the Irish and wat happened in their country. He said 1/3 died and 1/3 immigrated here bc in their own country they couldn’t speak their language, own land, profit off of their work AND not mention why AAs are so far behind in this country is crazy!!! Does he not see the correlation??
As someone who is on disability but also working this whole mean strikes me very much. I think one of the biggest things that needs to be talked about in our government is something called the cliff effect. That is probably one of the biggest reasons why people can't get out of poverty. I would suggest go looking it up and finding out exactly what it is.
Help all, not just the rich.
Congress should live in dorms when they're on the Hill
Future president right there
Dam girl. That's the most romantic thing I've ever heard in my life. 😍 AOC
Was I the only one crying by the 6minute mark?
We must end the oligarchic plutocracy we are living under.
