  • Starting this new project, the house was built in the early 70s. About a year ago some moisture was first noticed in a corner of the basement after a night of heavy rain. There is now mold in that corner and the carpet is "bubbly". I´m really interested in seeing what has gone wrong in that particular corner.
This is a big project for me with a lot of stone work as well as the draining job.

Next time a tarp down before piling up the dirt there.
But you are right about the pain in the butt electrical, have the own been told to drop wire and conduct down that hole while it is open to u- grade, you would have make a real difference for his later upgrades.

Thank you for the comment and tips! 🙂
I am not sure what the purpose of a tarp would be in this case. In my experience it is in the way when scraping the material clean from the lawn.
I would use a tarp if i know the material will be laying in the same spot several weeks and i do not want for example clay to rain down and mix with a driveway or such.

Clay pipes are what i usually find, not sure when they began with pvc but i guess it was somewhere in the 70s.

This is going to be a bear of a job because of the tight space and the plantings. I hope you brought along all of your patience. You will need it! 😊
6 mil plastic (what we call Visqueen) what layed over the wet asphaltic coating regularly in the 70's. Block was already known to "leak", so this was an early attempt to keep the water on the outside of the lower level.
Fortunately, the bottom of the footing is not too deep. That makes the digging a little easier (well. more like the stockpiling of spoils). 👍

It will be for sure, always feels bad to tear up a well kept yard. Everything but the hedge can be removed if needed though.
Luckily I have plenty of patience 😀 I do enjoy the challenge of working in tight spaces. The fact that it is mostly gravel that i excavate is nice, compared to clay it barely increases in size when excavated 👍🏼
Thank you for the info! The plastic actually seems to have kept the asphalt coating in good condition.
Nice to see you are still around 😀

I have never encountered a gas line, but electric cables are marked with yellow in Sweden!
