215 PS vs. 184 PS, how is this a fair comparison ? Choose the 325d with twincharger and 218 PS to even things out and please don't shift manually, go get the ZF 8HP Automatic to see the real "evolution" in terms of technology for the F30. And to be fair, please add at least 250-300kg of weight to the E30 M3 so its an even power to weight ratio here. If i were to choose a 3-Series it'd be the new 335d xDrive.

Well even though I am not a diesel fan at all, but I gotta argue with you here, the M550d does neither sound nor drive like a tractor. Auto Express what you upto, would have been more fare test if it was a 325d version with the 214hp rather than the lower powered 320d with 184hp, therefore keeping the power closer to the E30 M3, plus put that older car again a modern M3 and it stands no chance!
My A4 B8 2.0T FWD with stage 2 ECU tuned and with a lot of mods but just smoked by an E46 last month. M3 is too good regardless which model it is. M3 is a good performance car.
Modern 3 series wipes the floor with standard e30 M3, down to better developed suspension and latest tyres. The e30 looks way cooler though and definitely sounds way better too. As an everyday road car though, an e30 325 sport is nicer to live with. Personally though, I prefer my e21.
You are missing the point, new car supposed to be something people buy nowdays without thinking of any performance, 320d is a reasonable diesel, 328i isn't even the most reasonable petrol, 320i would be, but again, the point here is almost extremes, old performance icon versus new "best seller" everyday car. AWESOME SERIES!
I have a couple E30s so I'm biased, but I wish they had compared them on a track. None of the cars in either group are drag racers. Even if the 320d had a quicker lap time I guarantee they would talk about how much better the E30 was to drive.
I think people don't understand how these diesel engine or diesel in general works. They're not for flat out acceleration, the torque gives you great get up and go. However, diesel engines are very low revving compared to gasoline motors so you quickly run out of thrust to bring you up to speed. So where diesel is good at is at it's peak torque range around 1.2-2k RPM where torque peaks out, so from a light you can accelerate quickly out of there, but again you run out of thrust quick.
Not really, traction have been improved over time. You saw it too, if the race was shorter the new one would have won despite higher weight and less power.
Don't forget all the diesels are turbo charged and are against petrols which aren't. Be interesting to see how the test would fair if both cars where either turbo charged or non turbo charged. I wonder how the diesels would perform without a turbo.
You would be amazed at how quick the new generation 320d/520d bmws are between 0-60~ kph, but once you start rolling towards 80/100 kph it just dies out and you end up helplessly crawling up in speed
Max Wicked You're probably right Max. I don't doubt the newer models are engineering marvels and drive like dreams compared to the older M3 I was referencing. However, aesthetically, I can barely tell the new 3-series from a Hyundai. The 89' M3 was much sharper and stood out design-wise, IMO.
Fred G. Sanford convergent design. not necessarily bmw's fault. most manufacturers are moving toward a similar aesthetic that appeals to a large number of people.
The trim line has absolutely nothing to do with the performance. He drove the 6 speed manual and isn't a professional driver. The fact that the car did an 8.5 is actually due to his gear changes and his wheel spin. The 8 speed auto might have stayed on the torque curve better at high speed, I don't know. Either way, what you said doesn't really make any difference, the 320d does 7.5 no matter what trim level.
Even bigger reason to be careful then... Hoods/roofs are extremely easy to dented because they are made out of a thin sheet of metal, and barely any reinforcements. And no, just leaning against it is enough to scratch it if you have some dirt on your pants, or buttons. Rubbing your ass against it is even worse.
The Rat yeah but diesel engines lose power at top end, a petrol engine would have been a more interesting comparison to see how 4 cyl engines advanced with the years
Actually, modern diesels have a pretty smooth powerband, especially 6 cylinder engines. The most optimal petrol engine would be a 30i or 28i back when this video was filmed, but that still has over 240hp... so I do not know which petrol 3 Series would compare the best with this E30 M3.
Augusto Ortiz, I think the 320d is a pretty god comparison, as it's the one that will be seen as the most mundane (and most common) 3-series. I don't think that a 320i would really show the advance og the four cylinder engine, as it's a turbo charged engine - and comparing an old N/A to a modern turbo engine doesn't really show how much engines have evolved
the e30 wasn't designed for straight roads, with its light rigid body it was designed for track use and for the nimble roads as we didn't have the motorways we have now in those days when the e30 was being designed
Wow, the F30 looks huge. I think I read somewhere that the e30 M3 is a good 6 inches narrower and nearly a foot shorter than the e92 M3 coupe, looks like the 3 series just keeps ballooning. I miss small, quick cars. I'd much rather have ≈ 200hp in something light I can make dance on twisty roads than 300-400hp in a more bulbous car that'll be faster everywhere else
That E30 is extremely good looking !!
Yasser Bel I don't like BMW's.
I totally agree.
BMWs of the 70s, 80s & 90s were some of the best looking cars of all time. E9, E12, E26, E30, E31, E32, E34, E36, E38...
Yes, but not good like ,450SEL
I would choose the E30 anytime. its one of the most iconic cars ever made. And it has a soul that is almost totally missing in the newer car.

They should relaunch the E30, they would have sold millions and millions of it.
Tandem Drifter Yes I agree. And with modern petrol engines.

Seriously pal? Dont be stupid, you would choose an E92 even and E46 over and E30.
What about the E46 M3 CSL? E92 M3 GTS and E36 (euro) M3's? Come on...I think they are VERY worth looking at ;)
Fred G. Sanford Actually, the best M3 is the 1991 M3 Evo II, but I guess I'm just splitting hairs.
Does Mat Watson use to work for Auto Express 10y ago ? And now he have his own carwow on you tube over 9 million subs
Very cool idea for videos!
song is pretty good whats the name ??
Should have used a 320i although im not sure you have those over in the Uk
Augusto Ortiz or a 325d as it has 218hp, almost the same as the M3
I don't think that a 320i would really show the advance og the four cylinder engine, as it's a turbo charged engine - and comparing an old N/A to a modern turbo engine doesn't really show how much engines have evolved
why compare then ?
I thought the diesel was going to take the win here, how wrong was I!! Love this video and cannot wait for the following episodes
the e30 wasn't designed for straight roads, with its light rigid body it was designed for track use and for the nimble roads as we didn't have the motorways we have now in those days when the e30 was being designed
This is a curious thing. TH-cam should be full of videos like this.
Can you do a review about a bmw x4
No because they are shit
Wow, the F30 looks huge. I think I read somewhere that the e30 M3 is a good 6 inches narrower and nearly a foot shorter than the e92 M3 coupe, looks like the 3 series just keeps ballooning.
I miss small, quick cars. I'd much rather have ≈ 200hp in something light I can make dance on twisty roads than 300-400hp in a more bulbous car that'll be faster everywhere else
You should have taken 330i or 320i petrol vs petrol, diesels generally have poor top end
E30 with twin headlamps...iconic design
