You don't put in weird internet meme references into this, you make King Boo namedrop Phantom of the Opera because he's, y'know, a phantom, singing opera. It's a very classic reference that feels like the people actually making the game would FEASIBLY make. Mario isn't one for references mostly, but when they do them, they're usually to very classic stuff.

I know people don't like this King Boo, but I think that Wonder managed to show he can be great. Luigi's Mansion's King Boo is serious and a great threat (the jewel on his crown probably affects more than just his appearance), but without it, he is himself, the real King Boo, and he's is a goofy and cartoony ghost who does stuff like this.
And the difference is very much explainable! Most appearances of King Boo don't have the big gem on the crown, meanwhile his more menacing appearances in the Luigi's Mansion series do have the big gem, which is probably why he looks slightly different there
I have this wild headcanon that the Boos are divided in "clans" and each clan has a King Boo. Luigi was just unlucky cuz he pissed off the wrong King Boo, LITERALLY. Also no Boo Clans knows about the existence of the others and so do the Kings.

This game actually made me look up who voices King Boo and it turns out that the person who voices him also voices the Dry Bones enemies. I have no clue how the VA is able to make their voice sound so insanely inhuman. Whenever I try to immitate either King Boo or Dry Bones I end up coughing immediatly followed with me needing to drink cold water.

Fun fact, this isn't the King Boo. Like, the REAL one form the Luigi's Mansion games. If you pay close attention to the end of the level, when Luigi gets the Wonder Seed, King Boo becomes a regular one and his crown falls off. It wasn't King Boo, it was a regular Boo transformed by the Wonder Flower.
Honestly, I really liked the joke at the end. It kind of represents the Super Mario fanbase being nervous about the voice actor replacement. At least we got one of the best games of its series instead of being jumpscared. 😂
