I'm surprised you didn't mention that the individual who ended his life in the incident which led to the cancellation of To Catch a Predator was a district attorney. He had been caught attempting to lure what he believed was a 13-year-old boy.

The benefits out-weigh the risk.I'm surprised at your position. Not necessarily that you feel that way, but that you feel that way strongly enough make a video speaking out against and even making fun of the people willing to try to help. The analogy about Miley Cyrus doesn't even fit. Singing and identifying a predator, one at a time, and possibly putting them on the radar of authorities without all of the red-tape that can tie the hands of authorities, are not the same thing, at all. Acknowledging the unintended consequences of their activism is fine but, again, going as far as to speak out against, and make fun of, them is not a good look, sir. I imagined more from you.

Yes, vigilantism is almost always ill-advised. However, it's also important to see it as an expression of people's frustration with the ineffectiveness of our justice system -- where it seems like perpetrators are getting off scot-free a lot of the time. Maybe it's time to start retooling our justice system so that people can trust it to function properly. When that happens, there won't be much motivation for vigilantism in the first place.

    • @LukeSumIpsePatremTe
      @LukeSumIpsePatremTe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

The vigilantes don't care about justice. That's why they practice on what to say and what not to say to avoid getting punished on their own wrong doings.

Well, the point your making would again depend on a person's perspective and their own personal biases. You say that "vigilantism is an example of people's frustration with the ineffectiveness of our justice systemc", however, others might say that our justice system already engages in over-reach with overly powerful prosecutors and a society that relies too heavily on incarceration.

Hard disagree about this one. Usually your videos feel very professional and concise, but not this one.
First, you took one case where the vigilantee had a religious background and stretched it to make it seem like being a predator hunter (one who dislikes the idea of children being taken advantage of enough that they do something about it) is the same as being a religious fanatic (which is usually associated with delusional obsession). Can these two overlap? Definitely. Are they similar? Absolutely not.
Second, you mentioned that the vigilantee used to watch a lot of Chris Hansen and that the show was cancelled because someone killed himself because of it. Truth is, someone did kill themselves. But what you didn't mention is that there is still a lot of controversy about what exactly made him do it. Some say it was because he saw the cameras outside, while others say it was due to the fact that it was the only instance in the show where the police barged into the guys home (instead of luring him to a sting house, making it less to do with the show). There's a lot more to the story (like the predator being a district attorney). Also, the show made a huge comeback around 2015 but thats unimportant.
Third, I don't know why but you're making it sound like the best course of action in this situation is to "just leave it to someone else". The police does not have limitless resources. Of course the ideal scenario would be having an infinite amount of properly trained people do it, but that will never happen. Meanwhile just the thought of the sheer amount of vigilantees lurking around posing as children may be enough of a threat to potential predators and I don't want it to be dismissed. Also, people hate relying on the police to do what's right, so theres that.
Fourth, you mentioned that the vigilantees may be initiating the sexual talk themselves but... what's your point? Kids and teens are stupid, and blab with their friends about things related to sex all the time. Its the job of the ADULT to immediately turn that shit down, and ideally lecture them about the dangers of these kinds of advances.
Sorry for the rant. I love your other videos a lot, and because of that this video irked me so much.

Interesting perspective, however I’m still pro pred catchers. Police departments (around the world) don’t have the budget or man power to do all the work these catchers do. Yes there might be some “vigilantes” doing this too, but until there is a solution, something has to be done. Without them, they would most likely never be caught as police don’t have the time. Majority of the catchers I’ve seen work very hard in setting up a successful conviction from start to finish and a lot of police departments/prosecutors applaud them. Meta data would show if chat logs have been modified… and adding trump and religion into the mix for your argument is very strange 😂

I watch and support a host of predator catchers and none of them are motivated by religious reasons. The police don’t take investigations seriously and don’t conduct them. My problem with some of these people that do these "to catch a predator" style videos is their intentions. I've seen a lot of these people (one channel in particular) that are straight up bullies. I'm not sympathizing with the people they catch, grown men trying to meet kids, but you can clearly see that some of these youtubers don't care about kids. They just found a loophole so that they can bully people, and that's ok, because those people are worse.
I've seen videos of them making fun of a guy who tried to meet a boy. But not because of that, because he was gay and he talked gay. Or videos where the guy happened to be mexican, and they kept saying "go back to your country". Non of those things had anything to do with them trying to meet 13 year olds.

I look at these creep catchers as pure candid camera inspired entertainment and I really enjoy watching the catches while also realizing money is the main motivational factor for these vigilantes who will constantly talk about where one could donate to them. Two thoughts: 1) I have watched plenty of 'predator catcher' type groups in both the US and the UK, but I have never discerned any religious motivations in any of them- ever.
    2) Trained cops blundering and lying is mostly caused by years of cultural on-the-job sloppiness, mixed with a desire to protect their jobs & pensions. Predator catchers don't have those motivations.

I disagree with the sentiment that self-appointed vigilantes don’t understand the risks or dubiousness of their behavior. They do comprehend these things, but view their own actions as “justifiable enough” considering those that they go after. Knowing this about them goes a long way in understanding the vigilante mindset, which is comparable to a destructive activist that feels justified by reason of their cause.

Just because predator kills himself here and there, or just because a few people go crazy sometimes, I have nooooo issues with these people protecting our kids. More often than not, these hero’s put people behind bars or at least make the community aware of them.
Here’s a crazy thought…..if people stop fucking with our children, predator catchers will have to go back to their day jobs.
I don’t get this video, Dr. Grande. Jason was guilty. Maybe instead of scolding the vigilantes, scold the slow ass police departments who aren’t doing anything.
You mention the vigilantes interrupting the cops…..maybe the cops should actually do something.

The problem is (this is common among vigilante groups who take on these) they begin overstepping their grounds..To keep things exciting for their viewers (a lot of them is about views and subscribes) they get more edgy. I've seen one channel as their popularity grew they started getting more aggressive & confrontational on their "catches." In other words, they get more cocky and "comfortable" the more they do it. There are many of these groups that work with the police and they appreciate their work catching these pedaphiles. They take their 'style' from the To Catch A Predator program which was highly regarded as an educational program about how these predators work to lure children from their homes. There are even groups that work with schools to educate the parents on how these predators work and what kinds of techniques they use. Police simply do not have the resources to do this work and children end up sexually abused or go missing. Please consider not selecting one group as a representative of all groups. Thank you.

Most of the time, they just shove a camera in people's faces without their consent (which is not admissible in court) and threaten to call the cops if they don't speak/confess to them. Some of the time they never actually call the cops because the predator confesses to them for the spectacle on their TH-cam channel. Some of them are even executed very well with security. It's everybody's responsibility to protect children. If these guys are getting monetized while doing it, then so be it. I can. Nobody, not a single set of individuals on the planet wants child predators around (except child predators), doesn't matter who you are. But being a vigilante is not the solution, at least not untrained and unsupervised.
If there was a program, assistance for mentally questionable people to avoid becoming a predator, good reporting for families and a less aggressive and targeted police force or an independent task force, this would be a lot less of an issue.
Sadly no matter what, most child assault happens from family members meaning the biggest thing we can do is teach people how to raise kids and report things when we see any hints.

To Catch A Predator has a dirty secret; NBC doesn't want you to know that after the T.C.A.P. arrests, judges and DAs dropped a significant amount of the charges. That fact was brought to light by a competing network, ABC. ABC dug in and found out that DAs and judges had problems with the way evidence was collected by non-police entities-NBC Television and Perverted Justice.
The police played too small a role, compromising chain-of-custody, and were often just the muscle that tackled the sickos as they left the decoy houses. When evidence is gathered by a TV network motivated by ratings and ad revenue, it gives defense attorneys ammo to prove the network was biased in favor of landing the arrest footage.

Vigilantes are always a bad thing, no matter what. There needs to be a set of rules on how to properly behave and make sure that the person/persons rights and dignities are proteced. That's why we have trained people to do that. Justice can never be based on feelings and never be served based on emotions. All people no matter what the crime they are accused of (or guilty of) shall be treated equally. Vigilantes can on the surface seem like a good thing but in reality it's a bad thing. They don't have the skills required and they don't know the law. Sharing videos of people "getting caught" online with faces and names is a bad thing. People if found guilty of a crime, are according to law inncocent when they have done time served in jail, and must therefore be treated as innocent. They have paid their debt to society. Vigilantes do not have the skills required to do what they are doing.

If you say that these 'vigilantes', are setting up sting operations and then handing the chatlogs over to the authorities, then it woud never e accepted as evidence and these same people have also violated the law. You cannot pretend to be an investigator and think that somwhow you you are allowed to do an illegal act or bend the rules, which not even the police are allowed to d, the police also have to obtain legal justification in order to spy on someone and that's a good thing, otherwise it would easy to violate teh right of privacy. You must have a specific reason to investigate some individual or group and i do believe that the authorities are doing everythig they can to arrest individuals who violates the law, but they need to prove without doubt and the evidence has to be obtained in a correct manner, to ensure that no corrupt evidence has been submitted. There has to be stringent rules for evidence collecting in order to protect the innocent and to make sure that a fair trial will be taking place. What we see from vigilantes is video of someone they "caught" and then they try to humiliate them, but we havent seen any actual evidence and we do not hear from the accused party their side of the story. We can also assume that any evidence obtained from these vigilantes, would be wrongfully collected. Vigilantes are not above the law, and to interfere (violate) with other peple privacy is illegal.

It is very dependent on the group - in the UK they have been prominent for quite a while now, and whilst they also trace back to TCAP they were more common earlier on.
This is a general statement, so there are exceptions on either side of the pond, but the UK groups tend to be better than the US ones. This is because Citizens Arrest laws are far more established and well understood in the UK - or at least in England, Scotland is a different matter but the behaviour of the groups is not dissimilar - and as a result usually they will arrest the predator and hold them until the police arise. Many groups attempt to keep the families out of shot, and attempt to avoid identifying places of work and homes.
Now, this is not to say they are all as well behaved as this, there are prominent examples of having the predators arrive dressed up as clowns, getting dwarf predators to kick themselves in the head and the usual humiliation tactics. With that said, these are less common than in the US, where phoning the families up to get a reaction and filming it are common place tactics and there are examples of groups intentionally avoiding drawing police attention for further clout.
The problem as I see it, is on the average US "vigilantes" are more in it for the clout, whereas in the UK whereas clout is a concern, the primary one involves them working within the law to get these creeps arrested. Maybe the US should have clearer Citizens Arrest laws, although actually with all the guns available... maybe not.
