A look back at some of our long gone but favorite rides from the permanent midway at Fair Park / State Fair of Texas, Dallas. Remember the hot summer weekends when the Midway was in full swing ? My favorite place on earth as a child. Fletcher's Corny Dogs, the smell of exhaust from the Ferris wheel and train ride, and the sound of the Comet Junior wooden "kiddie coaster" racing along the green tracks, combined with the other midway attributes are vividly remembered. Also, my childhood days overlapped with the end of the hippie era. Scores of hippies frequented the fairgrounds, primarily for concerts at the Cotton Bowl during the off-season. I remember passing groups of them, surrounded by the smell of beer. I inserted an image of a hippie on the fairgrounds.
FEATURED ARE: The Sky-ride, the two matching Ferris wheels, the loud, gas guzzling, yellow kiddie train, video of the Comet and Comet Junior roller coasters, an actual POV (partial) from the Comet, the old Wild Mouse, the single rail “Flash” coaster, the Caterpillar, Tilt o Whirl, electric cars (that went out over a cement fish pond and through a tunnel), kiddie and adult bumper cars, rollo-plane, fireworks, the Lumillusion dark ride, rollo-plane, aerial view of Kiddieland, the Spider (with the Antique Car tracks in the pic), and the Antique Cars.
The midway at Fair Park was a different place back then. Although a much more beautiful spot now, the old midway had plenty of fairground charm, with the smells, cheerful noises, and the dazzling lights that adorned the rides. Fair Park was considered one of the most dangerous crime spots in Dallas. Today, security has at least tripled, which is awesome. Unfortunately, so have the prices.
