Here's the plot: "Immortals Connor and Duncan Macleod join forces against a man from Connor's distant past in the highlands of Scotland, Kell, an immensely powerful immortal who leads an army of equally powerful and deadly immortal swordsmen and assassins. No immortal alive has been able to defeat Kell yet, and neither Connor nor Duncan are skilled enough themselves to take him on and live. The two of them eventually come to one inevitable conclusion; one of them must die so that the combined power of both the Highlanders can bring down Kell for good. There can be only one... the question is, who will it be?"

This ending made me cry so much. Connor is finally at peace with Heather. Now they can be together again for all eternity. Long live clan McLeod.

Proper ending. The alternate ending, in the DVD releases wasn't necessary. This movie was a proper good-bye to Connor.

This was the theatrical version I saw in theaters back in 2000. I went ape shit when Connor and Duncan morphed back and forth during the quickening!
Still wanted to see Duncan raised into the sky like Conner used to.
Hopefully the reboot makes it a consistent thing
At least in the DVD release, after this scene, Duncan is met by Kate, who somehow was not killed by Kell. They both stays together forever. A bit of relief for the MacLeods after so much pain in all these centuries, both reunited with their forever lovers, in this life or the next. That is the end of the story for me :_)

This was an amazing fight and ending. The only thing that would have made it epic was if Duncan and Kell were actually the last immortals. Sort of a bittersweet victory in a sense. Duncan wins the prize but he's all alone as a mortal now with all the people from his past dead and now has to start life all over again.

Amazing tribute
I was a bit upset that they didn't go with the original theatrical trailer where Connor and Duncan both fought Kell, who had used some form of power to split himself into two immortal beings. I ended up being pleased with the ending after a couple of times of watching the movie. Definitely one of favorite Hilander movies!
I think they changed cause remember it has to be one on one not two against one
@Blu and Jewel very true. I just remember seeing them fighting two Kells. I would've loved to have seen that play out as well. Love this movie though.

It kinda pisses me off that this ending wasn't in any home video release. Unless there's an original Highlander endgame dvd (not a director's or producers cut) out there that we don't know about
