there is a 3rd option ,hike up the 4 mile trail an take the panoramic trail which takes you to nevada falls an hike down either the mist trail or horse trail to the valley , its about 13 miles total.

I did the hike down in 2002. Amazing views. And, it's much easier going down- besides the inclination, you're going from thin air to thicker air.

  • @carroux4050

3 Weeks ago I did the 4 Mile trail as well. Actually, I only did it because the road is closed to Glacier Point and I didn't inform myself about the elevation change upfront.
During the 3+ hours hike to Glacier Point I was sometimes cursing that its a straight up trail (sometimes steep), but to be honest: it was totally worth it.
Amazing views and experience. Just be aware: if you are completely out of shape this might be not the trail for you :)

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yea, this hike is a butt kicker but the views are incredible. It's almost impossible to find a hike out of the valley that doesn't make you sweat though. You picked a good option.

This is the way to go to do Panoramic Trail, just add it if in good enough shape. The reverse view of this one is from Clouds Rest, which you can also add to it and Panoramic. That is a very long day though.

Thanks for posting. I watched your video before the hike to assess if ok for 9 year old. A week ago we did it not only to Glacier Point but continued to Sentinel Dome, and back thru Glacier Point down to the valley.

    • @Hikingguy

That's an awesome hike. You can also do a longer version (prob not for a 9 year old) down the Pohono to Tunnel View. It's a long day but pretty epic with no crowds.

If at Glacier you can walk down a quarter mile to get the big views then back up to Glacier. Same deal with Panoramic. You can go all the way down to Illouette Falls and back up.

You're welcome, and yea, it should be good but conditions always change. It is a popular trail, so even if there's snow around, it should be well-trodden. If it's sketchy, just turn around or try using micro-spikes.

Coming from Scotland to visit Yosemite next year covid permitting. Seen glacier road will be closed all year which has kinda messed up my plans. Will have to hike 4 mile trial up and panorama trail back down. I’m a complete novice hiker but i do run 5 Miles 5 days a week so reasonable fit but would this be doable for me?

    • @Hikingguy

It will be a long day, doing Panorama prob adds about 10mi+ to the effort to get back to the trailhead. It's a beautiful trail through, I think you'll be okay if you prep with water / snacks and leave early.

Do you know anything about going up 4 mile and down Panorama and John Muir? (sorry if you already covered this topic)
I have a mild/medium fear of heights but looking at the one section of 4 mile that opens up a bit on your 360 version, I think I will be okay. How long is this area of the hike? With the road closed, I am determined to give getting up to Glacier Point a try.
I don't think I would be comfortable doing the mist trail down, hence Panorma to John Muir. Do you know of any areas that might give someone with fear of heights issue on Panorma/John Muir?
Taking a trip to Yosemite beginning of September with my wife. We are in decent shape and we are starting a little bit of a program to get our selves ready. We don't hike a lot but, we have a couple of New Hampshire hikes planned over the summer to help us feel more ready. I am likely going to hire a guide for this long dayhike to give myself some piece of mind, but would still love your insights.
THANK YOU so much for your videos and inspiration!

I think you'll be fine on the 4 Mile Trail, there aren't any real narrow parts, the camera is probably making it look a little worse than it actually is. And Panorama/JMT will be about the same.
