"Pick of the Day" - 1990 Rickenbacker 325JL and 1964 Fender Twin Reverb

  • Today Jay picked out another excellent signature model, though today's is from Rickenbacker! This 1990 325JL is a John Lennon Limited Edition Rickenbacker 325, in Jetglo finish. The guitar is a 3/4-scale with three Toaster pickups, vibrola, and a 5-knob tone-section all packed into this little chambered body! A bit of light play wear, but overall this instrument is stunning! For amplification, we figured a 1964 Fender Twin Reverb would be appropriate (when isn't it?)
For more information about the guitar and amp, please check out:

Couldn’t agree more I’ve played them in a guitar store but honestly playing them always feels an occasion, I hope to be an owner someday too!!😊 A 325 C64 is the one for me!!

In my opinion Rickenbacker guitars of the series 300, designed by the German luthier Roger Rossmeisl from about 1958 belong to the most beautiful, most aesthetic and most distinctive guitars in the world

Rickenbackers are probably the best looking guitars out there, very well made, unique looking & they come set up at the factory and I love mine. But they are not so great lead guitars, they r ok. They r better as Rhythm guitars. You love them but then you gotta own one and try them . Their best lead guitar user was John Fogerty of CCR. Also the 12 string 360 is kinda a one trick pony. Model 325 scale was too small for my hands and taste so I got the full scale version 355JL/LE and I’m glad that I followed my salesman’s advise on that. Cheers.

You should get one. Put flat wound strings on them and go to town.

Back in ‘91 I was in a music store where they had both the 6 and 12-string versions of the full-size scale JL Limited Edition guitars. I could afford only one. I sat there with an amp, a cable, and a guitar stand for hours, going from one guitar to the other and back, unable to make a decision. I knew whichever one I chose I could never have another chance at the other. Finally a sales clerk came up to me and said, “Tough decision, huh ? Let me ask you something; maybe this will help: Do you have any 6 string electrics ?” “Yes, I have 3.” “Do you own any 12 string electrics ?” “No.” “Well, here’s something to think about - if you buy the 12 string, you now have a completely new flavor to add to your sound palette. If it were me, I would want my first 12 string, and you can’t do better than a Rickenbacker !”
I bought the 355/12JL and never looked back. I LOVE that guitar.

:) You called it a “petite tremolo” arm. The whole guitar is frankly petite. The two times I’ve played one, it’s amazed me that grown adults play them.
Then again, I am totally accustomed to standard scale models. I have similar hands to Tommy Shaw (Styx / Damn Yankees), so you’d think I would prefer a shortscale like the 325. However, my first electric guitar was a Stratocaster, so I just went for standard scale.
I love how you not only didn’t only play Beatles classics, but you also demonstrated the tonal capabilities of all three pickups.

Probably the cleanest vintage twin reverb I've ever seen, and that's one versatile guitar .........although I don't think it fits the look of every guitar player out there due to the short scale. But it sounds great I must say

A gorgeous, unmistakable sound from a beautifully made instrument and one of the most iconic models in history. It's an investment as a limited edition and piece of art, but as an owner-player of two Rics, a 360/6 and a 1993 Plus, I can say that I wouldn't consider the 325 for anything beyond fun noodling -- I mean, I'd never gig with it. I'd opt for the full (24 3/4) scale length version, the 350V63; maybe its longer neck makes the proportions look a little off with the small body, but I think it's just a more practical choice for the average player. ... I thought it was just John who referred to himself as "The Fat Beatle," around the time of the filming of _Help!_
