I went into this movie feeling the same way girl... wasn't sure what to expect, didn't think I would hate it but not sure if I was going to enjoy it that much. It was so much deeper and layered than I expected. Most of the haters on this film are people that have never watched it... or they did watch it - and felt personally attacked by some of the themes. Which says a lot more about them than any insults they hurl at the film.

Four of us saw the movie three times the first couple of weeks it was out. The theater was sold out every time. All three times there was either a group of women screaming in agreement or applauding Gloria's narrative that you cried at. You could also hear people sniffling at the end when the various images of women was shown. BTW...those images were of family and friends of the cast and crew.

Yeah I get that. Feel like this would have been an experience in theatres.
That’s such a nice detail to include real images in that moment.

When Ken says sublime, look at Barbie's face because she almost laughs because on every take Ryan Gosling would go back there and say a different word and Greta just chose sublime.

That and Sasha almost breaks during the scene where Ken is throwing Barbies clothes out of the dream house, the look on her face makes me crack every time

So many people are surprised that Ryan Gosling sings, but he started on the Mickey Mouse Club and in La La Land he sings, dances and even learned to play jazz piano in 3 months and he had only known a few chords before.

Between the trailer parodying 2001 (the start of the movie) and the fact that it's a Greta Gerwig movie, I knew that it subvert any expectations I had, but I honestly didn't expect it to go as hard as it did. It highlights so many things that need to be talked about.
Mattel deserve some respect for letting it go the way it did. There was a moment when they weren't sure about one scene they thought was "off-brand" after reading the script. The COO flew to the UK to visit the set and after meeting with Greta and Margot and then seeing a live performance, he got the nuance of it and let it stand.

Yeah the song the Kens sing is the actual lyrics, its an older song from the perspective of a guy in an emotionally abusive relationship. Theres actually a full cover of the song by Ryan gosling released for the movie.

@@PhilipManzano The song is Push by Matchbox 20. It's about treating someone that had hurt you bad so they can feel the pain they made you feel. Perfect choice.

Great reaction! I saw it at the movie theatre twice and both times you could hear lots of laughter and silence with people sniffling during the speech by Gloria and at the end with the home movies. The movie has so many deep moments. I too was compelled to do some research on Ruth Handler after the first time I watched the movie. This movie will definitely go down in history as a controversial movie that had garnered a lot of conversations about the way we see genders, societal issues and many more.
I think it's great for couples to watch and share their experiences. Some men thought that the cat- calling scene and the slap was exaggerated but most women can testify that it's a real thing and it happens on varying levels.
There's so many concepts in this movie, I can see it being discussed in educational institutions. Someone could write a dissertation on the movie if they were studying a Film & TV course.
    Thanks again for reacting 😊

Loved your vulnerable reaction, thank you so much! Re: whether I cried, I choked up hard when the Mattel men were trying to get Barbie “back in the box.” As a woman who’s made choices that aren’t always accepted by the patriarchy, I VERY DEEPLY FELT that order to be predictable and controllable, for others wanting to “put me in my place” and pressure me to be “traditional.” I went through years of people telling me I’ll regret decisions that, 20 years later, I’m happy I made and don’t regret at ALL. I actually had to pause the movie and process that before I could keep watching.
The part that made you cry made me almost cheer. I felt like, YES, SAY IT, SAY IT OUT LOUD, acknowledge what women know is true but we ignore! For me that was an empowering scene. But I cried watching you cry during that, because I can also feel that being your gut-punch (like mine was hearting, “get back in the box”).
Thank you again for posting this. I’m subscribing to check out your other stuff based on how much I enjoyed this reaction. :)

Wow. In all honesty, the symbolism behind getting back in the box didn’t even occur to me until you pointed it out. So interesting to see how differently you experienced this film - thank you for sharing. I admire your courage. You definitely had more of it than I did because I think in a lot of ways, I “stayed in the box” for far too long. But thank God for growth and breakthroughs 😅 Thanks again❤ Cheers, Laurel!

I love that you are talking about both sides and how patriarchy hurts both men and women. I didn’t notice they didn’t show sad moments in the montage. One of my friends pointed out that a lot of the moments were focused around family and being parents. Considering how they started the movie about girls only getting baby dolls and how Barbie changed that it was disappointing to her when she saw/realized that.

Thank you for an honest and emotional response to this movie. Just watched one with a woman being completely incompetent to relate to the message . I mean.... Is it a perfect movie? Probably not. Is it a thought provoking, daring movie? Yes! And all under the Barbie umbrella. Gonna subscribe now and watch more of your content. Thank you!

There are a lot of Barbie collectors and they are serious. I have a Halloween Birdcage with Barbies dresses as werewolves, Bride of Frankenstein, Mummy Mommy and others and entered it in the Oklahoma State Fair. I would stand back and listen to what people said and a surprising number thought it was sacrilege and all the Barbies came from Thrift stores. After this movie just call me a creator of weird Barbies.

Barbie houses didn't have water and in Barbie Land it is kids playing with the dolls which is why Ken goes end over end after hitting the wave and the car goes upside down.

Barbie is about making space for girls to imagine a world where she lives her dream, not a man’s idea, or our patriarchal society’s idea, of what her dream should be - until Barbie, it was only being a wife and mother.
Being a wife and mother is wonderful if that is what you choose, and that should be celebrated if that is what you choose. But it’s equally wonderful to want other things - to be defined by who you are as an individual, not defined by your relationships with others outside of yourself.
It no surprise that a lot of people are upset about this movie. Many men and women are uncomfortable with women choosing their own identities. They prefer a world where women’s roles and dreams are pre-determined. Imagine answering the question: Who are you?
Most men in our society are raised to view that as an open-ended question. Most women in our society are raised to view that as a multiple choice question.
As women’s roles evolve, women are expected to be grateful that we are being “given” more and more choices. But they are still predetermined choices.

Barbie's feet do not flex and if they are flat she can't wear any of the shoes. Ryan Gosling had to learn to roller blade. Some reviewers get really upset with Ken, but he had no rights or anything in Barbie Land. Barbie Land was very slanted. I worked at Toys R Us and most girls did not get Kens ever and when they did they didn't play with them. Ryan Gosling sent a picture as the reason he decided to be Ken because he found a Ken upside down in the yard next to a squeezed lemon.

you went to a movie about a 1950's doll and were brought to tears? sorry I had a barbie in the 1950's and I as someone over the age of 10 would never go see a childs movie about a doll written by someone who was not born in that era, and I certainly would not cry, except if I was forced to go see it , just because there is a strike and there is nothing else to go see.

    • @PhilipManzano
      @PhilipManzano  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

Haha interesting. Hopefully you can respect that everyone has their own experiences that they bring into a movie/show - and that shapes a reaction.
I know there was a lot of people who truly disliked this movie. Tons of articles written about it- so you’re definitely not alone. In fact, you’re probably in the majority.
But honestly.. I don’t get all the hate. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's clearly not a kids movie, and how weird to judge people for feeling emotions where you cannot. Old and out of touch strikes again. And a liar to boot. You should go virtue signal elsewhere 😂

PG-13 wouldn’t suggest a kids movie. And if you haven’t invested your time to see the film, you should probably stay out of the discussion. It was a wonderfully made film with a deeper plot line than most films made. I hope you find your happiness, you seem like you could use some joy. ❤️
