Thanks Stan I love the creativity. I was wondering how to do this. Another Bulls Eye for You Tube viewers like me.

That trick is usable on many machines with an open horizontal spindle. I just scored an old Hammond tool and cutter grinder which isn't really designed for mill sharpening, but adding a spindex will be a natural fit.
You can clamp a shop vac hose with a wide nozzle aligned with the plane of wheel rotation to catch some of the dust. It's an ancient trick as is putting a panty hose leg over your vacuum filter to prevent clogging.

Interesting....it would be cool to see the actual grinding in action!

    Hi Shadon,
Good deal. Its a fine tradition using a tool for something the designers never thought of. I see you have added a pattern of tapped holes in the bottom of your spin indexer. Is that to mount it to an angle plate?
    All the best,
    Tom

Very cool idea Stan, thanks for the tip and especially the warning lol. I had to chuckle cause most of the time I do catch myself before doing something stupid, but not always 😜

To catch the abrasive dust I use "sticky mats" cardboard with grease spread on it. The dust sticks to it and does not bounce or slip off. After the jod they are bagged and binned.

Just found this Shadon. Just got a cheapy spindex - and have various plans for it after truing it up etc and making it better. Interesting approach - 10:4 re the AlO grit! (Or is it AlO2 - forget my valencies!)

I'm not sure I know what you are doing with your "probe". So you're turning the handle on the Spindex and because the "probe" is sitting in the flutes, it pulls the spindle of the spindex forward, aligning the flute edges of the mill with the grinding wheel? Not sure I'd have much luck with my Spindex. whenever I have tried to use it, it chatters. Too much play between the spindle and the casting.even when the locking pin is engaged.

    Hi mate.
Bloody smart cookie you are. I don't know how ridged the set up is, but it's pretty clever.

The Clarkson T&CG uses pieces of flat spring steel (re-purposed hacksaw blade) as the tool rests. Because of the spring action, you can use them as a ratchet when indexing the tool. John Stevenson has a channel here and participates on many forums. His wife sells engineering stuff on ebay (marypoppinsbag) and they do a DVD on Tool an Cutter grinding which many have found useful (item 360797299864 just now). I have two complete Clarksons that exist only as a pile of bits awaiting rebuild. A wheel guard would not only be safer, but allow you to capture a good deal of the dust with a vacuum cleaner whilst grinding.

A flat piece of spring steel is brilliant, after using this set up for a few hours, I can see the value it could provide. Ill look into a Clarkson, thanks for the comment.

Mighty expensive bench grinder. I would think your surface grinder would do a nicer job, and i bet you could still rig your rotation probe to work also. Just a thought.

your vise is packed full of abrasive…… will take more than removing sliding J to clean that. and I believe you will have to plow your nut and it’s way through the Alum ox to get it out… maybe get a dedicated vise or just make a riser for spinD?

+brucegor Hey Bruce, I'm sure this method is horrible to watch for a pro, the setup time alone makes this ineffective, let alone the questionable results, I'm still on the prowl for a nice KO Lee or Denkel.

    • @brucegor
      @brucegor 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+Shadon HKW . sorry did not mean to disparage what you did.I see a lot of time and effort in that set up.as i said needs must when the devil drives. quick note when useing the centering post do not touch off on the wheel with it runing. instead rock the wheel and feed in till it touches or better yet put a shim between. that saves the post. i make my own for my ko lee radius fixture. ko lee wants an arm and leg for replacement
