Bach loved Buxtehude's music, but I don't know if he was really ever his student.

I believe he walked 200 miles to learn from him.

@@foothillschapel He did set on the path to listen to Buxtehude, and he admired him. He never studied under him. I have one piece, BUX 208 WV Nun bitten wir den heiligen Geist, that I love to use as an organ offertory. A church I used to be the organist for always liked me to introduce the piece before the offering was taken. This one I loved to relate to a congregation. In 1703
G, F. Handel and Johann Mattheson both set out on the road to Lubeck to meet and listen to Buxtehude play. By this point, Buxtehude was elderly and wanted to retire. Buxtehude hosted both of the young men. After he performed a service, which Handel was said to have enjoyed, he offered Handel the position. However, there was one caveat to the offer. You see, Buxtehude's eldest daughter, who was said to be rather plain, was unmarried. In order to secure the post, the said organist also was expected to take her as his wife. Whereupon considering this package offer, the next morning found Handel and Mattheson back on the road heading south. Handel decided that another post somewhere -- like England -- us where his future and fortunes lay. Bach himself, in 1705 traveled to Lubeck, but not to inquire about the post. He simply wanted to hear Buxtehude play some of his compositions.
Someone on this thread stated that Buxtehude and Bach were contemporaries. Not really, as Buxtehude was almost 50 years Bach's senior and was Danish. Bach, a German composer, did gain some inspiration from Buxtehude, but Bach was his own man. He was a creator of styles. Both were talented, Bach's talent, though, was transcendental. I love both composers; I have both in my repertoire.

Not a student per se, but one who walked hundreds of miles to hear his music (and to copy much of it out?) That's the way I would picture it.
