  • An Integrated Energy System based on the concentrated solar power technology was constructed and installed between October 2015-June 2016 to secure the production of 17,000,000kg sustainable tomatoes a year in the Australian desert - this accounts for approximately 15% of Australia’s entire tomato market. The plant in Port Augusta (South Australia) - designed and delivered by Aalborg CSP for Sundrop Farms - uses the sun and seawater to heat 200,000m2 greenhouses in wintertime and on cold summer nights, to provide 450,000m3 fresh water a year by desalinating seawater drawn from the nearby Spencer Gulf and to periodically run a steam turbine to produce electricity.

So what does a tomato cost in this dream?

The tomato prices are so good that Coles Supermarkets has signed a 10 year supply deal with this solar farm. As you can see it's not a dream - it's a fully functioning business that is successfully supplying thousands of tonnes of tomatoes a year to Australia's second biggest supermarket chain. And it does that on marginal land. The tomatoes taste great too.
