I can go anywhere my friends with JL's can go and to be honest... with less electrical gremlins than they deal with. Not saying I'll never go "newer" but I'm a huge fan of making what you have better and enjoying it.
Probably already mentioned, you can also use the string method for ballpark alignment- I always used it with my quads. Wrap a sting around the jeep at the tires center point. If the alignment is off you will have a gap between tire and string, adjust until the stringi is flat against all four tires it should be good to drive it to alignment professional.

Nice upgrade Jason! I just did the same axle swap on my wife's Jeep after her front axle was bent in an accident. I was in the same boat, there are beefier upgrades, but it didn't fit her style of wheeling. The UD44 was a good fit. Solid axle for sure!
So...you must have kept the 4.10 gearing? Obviously if you were in 4x4 out on the trail. I'm curious why you didn't bump to 4.88s or 5.13s since it sounds like you are doing the rear axle as well?
I'm swapped to 4.88 years ago and just ordered this axle with the same to match the rear for now. I don't think I'm going larger than 38" tires but you never know.
As usual an awesome vid! Glad you didn’t need to replace the woodys shafts I have the 1350s front and rear. I have to regear so doing both axles think I’m doing the pair set 44 front 60 rear but def want those knuckles!
Thanks dude! I did have to swap the pinion flange from my stock axle but... yeah woody's is the way for me as well. What 60 are you going with? Spicer doesn't make a semi float 60 rear (yet) and it is important to me to keep my wheels and brakes. That's just too much money to do axles and then get brakes and new fancy wheels.
I love the music you looped into this one. Gives me a nostalgic Dragon Ball Z vibe. Always professional and honest videos. I watch every one of them all the way through no matter what.
Death Wobble Alignment help and DW fix. 4 Years ago I bought a stock 2013 CG JK 2D and installed an AEV 3.5 Dualsport RS SC lift with 18" Fuel Rims and BFG Ko2 35x12.50 r18 tires and it ran great until it didn't. Early last year the dreaded Death Wobble. By this time it had 85K on it so I figured something was worn and it was. The track bar bushings were shot and the ball joints were heavily worn. So I replaced them and then I started chasing the dreaded intermittent DW problems. Number One: Never trust alignment shops. They go by the book and if your Jeep is not stock anymore the book does not work. During the process of elimination I ended up installing the full SteerSmarts setup which greatly improved my steering tightness to better than stock but still intermittent DW and to make the story short I ended up replacing just about everything connected to my front end including new bearing hubs, u-joints and control arms and still the DW at random. At least they were things I wanted to do anyways :) Then I started noticing a slight cupping on the outer edge of my tires. But the shop says dead on! So I found this article and repeated it exactly. and guess what. my Death Wobble went away. wranglertjforum.com/threads/how-to-align-your-jeep-wrangler-tj.85/ You got lucky with your eye alignment but I played with mine adjusting and driving: repeat. first off. The alignment shops alignment was almost a 1/2 inch off according to my new sticks and tapes and the stick length is crucial. If you have 37" tires then you need 37" sticks perfectly centered on the hub for measuring. If you look at the diameter of a circle. The bigger the circle, the different the measurement is going to be with two adjacent circles measuring the length of the radius endpoint difference between them. (I hope that made since) I ended up going with 3/16 tow in in the end on mine. Yours may vary. Different tires track different ways and may offset your needed tow. Trial and Error is the only way to fix this. Another thing I found is tire pressure. Running my K02's at 30psi instead of the tireshop 36psi also greatly improved ride and steering. I off road but in the city I drive fast. 80 on the HW fast in the corners and with all these upgrades it now handles better than stock now. Another thing to look at is pinion angle and scrub radius. If you are using wheel spacers or after market rims without the correct offset. you have increased your scrub radius. From Pirate 4x4 below. The ROOT cause of death wobble is high scrub radius. Scrub is caused by improper backspacing of the wheels. Changing your caster, camber, toe, ball joints, rod ends, tire balance, etc. will cover it up and change the harmonics to a different speed. The proper way to eliminate death wobble is to correct your scrub. If you draw an imaginary line through both of your ball joints (looking from the front), the line should come about 1 inch below the center of the tire. The distance between the center of the tire and this line is your scrub. Anything over 1 inch can cause death wobble. There is a good video here on YT. 6 min long with pretty pictures. th-cam.com/video/SUDMEd1bMZI/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=EngineeringExplained Your Castor angle is also important. If your Jeep has too little caster angle, it can be a candidate for developing death wobble. you can adjust this with your Lower Control Arms and it should be about 6 degrees (best) on the Jeep. Having less or ZERO castor will also cause DW Hope this helps
i did the same axle same metal cloak components and big rpm alum drag tie.. mc trackbar. toe in by 1mm at home corrected the wobble to nothing and perfect track down the road.
Oh my word I can’t believe you just posted this! Thanks for the video!!! I’ve been debating the Ultimate 44 vs Dynatrac and Currie. My front Rubicon 44 is bent and has some serious issues. I’m ordering a new housing tomorrow!!!
Thank you Jason!!! Your videos are the best out there - very practical upgrades and you include the struggles to make them real!!! Love the blue differential cover!!
Good description and comparison Jason. As for the high pinion front Dana 44, its more than merely to keep front driveline angles more shallow, more importantly it places the pinion on the driven side of the ring gear which makes for a stronger assembly. I also couldn’t justify the added weight of going with one-ton axles for my driving style in my 6.2 liter LS powered 2011 JKUR. Mike
Swapped in the UD44 in my JK X this spring. 1,000% agree best bang for the buck. It really is as easy you show it to be. Cut the bracket off for the steering stabilizer and use the TF bolt that doubles as the track bar bolt and you can use a stock style steering stabilizer 🙂 I've also had as good luck with the DIY alignment as the 'pro' shop... Pretty sure the diff cover bolt is 30in-lb...
Jason absolutely love your videos. Having owned six jeeps myself and finally about two months ago got myself into 2012 JK Rubicon Unlimited I am pumped !! Again your personality on the videos is awesome and keep it going. And by the way there are plenty of us out there that are just as meticulous as you LOL. Love it brother 🤘🏻🤙🏼👍🏼
I've always used the two men and a tape measure method for front end alignment. My LJ likes 0° of toe. It would be nice if dana made one of these for my LJ. Currie and dynatrac are my only real choices
Had the same wobble after rebuilding the steering, forced me to go in for an alignment lol! Was pretty scary, only took a little bump and would not stop until I came to about a complete stop. Had a neighbor say “you get all this work done, then it’s time for A new jeep “. I said no, I would replace the engine or transmission or rebuild one or both.
New axle is always exciting. With the death wobble, my first instinct was to get mad at the alignment guy for using plywood. Really? It was totally a bad alignment issue. So, my beef was with the alignment guy; but, then when I resaw the video, I realized those bead-locks don't give the machine a good place to mount onto the tires. What he should have done is cancel the alignment and ask you to go put on a different set of wheels (like my guy once did) That's why I kept my stock wheels set. If you put your stock wheels on, you can go back and the alignment will be easier and accurate. Just thought I'd share that with you. Maybe I'll go on your FB and share a photo of my wheel storage dolly I made. FYI Cheers!
Thanks for making this Video man tons of good info just waiting for the weather to play nice here in New York so i can get my ud44 installed keep up the good work
Howdy and welcome to the comment section! Glad to hear from someone that these videos give a few tips to. My goal is to present the stuff that makes sense to me and let you decide what might work best for you. I learn a lot along the way and things that work for a bit might not fit later.
I just subscribed, great video dude! I finally picked up a cj7 last year and man did you hit a great point when you said put a smile on and keep wrenching! Broken bolts and death ☠️ wobble are no fun, thanks again
Great video very helpfull, been there when crap goes wrong like it did in your video i like how you kept your cool. I would have lost my mind. Appreciated you actually providing the torques as well. Thanks for the video.
my used tj came with the most severe death wobble at 45-55 mph. I loved it, I loved my jeep no matter what, and I eventually found a way to et rid of it entirely but Man it was a dead straight death wobble, never scared me just thought of it as a normal thing.
Nice upgrade, I have the sport jk and want Dana 44 locker kit for front and rear, but I need to fix alot of thing. However I did get the power stop z36 from your channel. Love them. Worth the 380 bucks.
I had death wobble hit on a highway between a jersey wall and a semi truck, I thought I was going to lose my Jeep! Still have nightmares about that day!
Awesome video brother and thank you for sharing your Jeep journey. Been watching for years man and your content is some of the best on YT in my opinion. Cheers, Jason!
I enjoy your videos and content, thank you for making them Jeep'n Jason. It's inspiring to watch for my own project, and helps me learn/understand various aspects I haven't previously considered.
Dana 44 front is totally fine for a jk on 37s as long as you sleeve the tubes and c gusset reinforce. The rear 44 keeps bending the axle flanges causing annoying issues. So a full float rear is preferred.
Going high steer with a 3.5" lift & UD44's 2" raised trackbar bracket is a recipe for bump steer. Ask me how I know lol. I had to tear down the UD bracket & replace with a 3" Artec. I also had the pumpkin welded to the tubes on their UD after seeing their tubes get twisted. Although content, I sort of regret not going with a ProRock or Rock Jock. I guess there's a reason why it's one of the more budget friendly aftermarket housings
I don’t know what you mean about bump steer.... this geometry is absolutely perfect and with 3” of bump stop extenders I don’t even have up travel problems. Didn’t you see me driving around without a stabilizer? It is amazing
Awsome.video thanks for the tricks and tips on this upgrade... really loved the drone footage that was awsome.. keep the videos comin and stay safe out there..
I reckon you will need a steering dampener regardless just to be on the safe side in the event you go over a bump or pot hole while doing over 55 mph to minimize the dead wobble.
With that high steer you better watch out on your passenger side when your flexing. Not only do you have high steer knuckles, but you’ve also got a top mounted drag link. So when your passenger tire starts to stuff the drag link might hit the frame rails.
@@AutoEdits yea you should be good to go then. Just wanted to put it out there in case you were unaware. I’ve had the UD44 for a while now and just like you it fits my application perfectly. Awesome video!
I’m leaning toward the Pro Rock 44 pro with the pumpkin pointing up higher toward the transfer case. Gives better steering feel when lifted over 4”. Not to mention that the PR44 has a 1/2” thick tubing vs Ultimate Dana’s 1/4”.
I love your videos. I learn so much! The way you took everything that was thrown at you and still made it happen is inspiring. I wanna be like you someday 😅👌🏼
Hi. Getting ready to do this exact swap in just a few days. I'm looking forward to it. Are you in Colorado? I see some trails (Penrose) that look familiar.
One of the biggest regrets about being overzealous in wanting to skip to a 60/14b junkyard swap was missing out on the branded crates 😩 Edit: Was happy to see Pinto midway through, haven't seen one of your videos in a while and didn't see the puppy in the beginning.
Hi Jason, I really enjoy watching your videos, and learn a lot from you as I build and go off road. Also, I live in Newhall, and lots of scenes I can recognize! One question, where is the dirt road that you hit up quickly? I only know Rowher flats ohv, and is there anywhere closer than that?
Hi Jason this is a great video I have enjoyed watching and learning. I have a rubicon like you and I'm wondering about how you did the wiring for the locker 🤔 I have the kit i will be getting to it soon would love some advice about how you did it.
Hi - How did you tighten the Metalcloak front trackbar lock nut in the UD44? That axle trackbar mount covers the nut. Thanks for any help you can provide.
That was tricky. I installed it at ride height... marked it so I knew the bushing orientation and then took it out to tighten it. Kind of a pain and next time will just grind the Dana mounting flange for clearance.
@@AutoEdits LOL - I was thinking the same thing. Grinding a little off. I gotta say, the bushing was a very tight fit at the axle so it'll be a pain getting out. But I was thinking to grind off material myself. Thanks for the quick response.
Been watching your videos for both the Jeep and Ram 1500 content. When you rebuilt the front suspension on the 1500. RCV axles were installed. But I didn't see that done on the Jeep. The price has improved since you installed the RCV axles on the Ram. So what is your thinking?
Good question. By the numbers, the Spicer chromoly axles shafts are a bit stronger but at this size it doesn't much change how I feel ... the RCV would offer smoother power at full steering angle but I have the Reid knuckles at maximum bump so these 1350 U-joint style don't bind at all. If I needed more steering angle (and I might) RCV would absolutely be the way to go but the Dana Crate Axle was ALL IN at around $3800 with chromoly axles... RCV's are still another $1200 so bang for the buck is important at the moment.
Good video. I may look into this. I noted that these are available for the front, but could not find similar crate axles for the rear. I have been thinking about regearing and could just as easily replace both axles. Probably easier and I'd get better overall housings/axles at the same time. But can't find the rear models on the Spicer website.
Howdy and thanks! Here's my suggestion... I still do like this as a front axle option for most of us but look to get a semi-float Dana60 rear axle by Fusion or if you can wait a few more months... Spicer will offer that as well! I'm trying to decide if I can wait or might go with the Fusion axel rear option for my Jeep.
When you have death wobble diagnosis, always start with a tire rotation... but since you just had an alignment I would say the alignment shop left something loose.what gear ratio?

Thanks dude! I did have to swap the pinion flange from my stock axle but... yeah woody's is the way for me as well. What 60 are you going with? Spicer doesn't make a semi float 60 rear (yet) and it is important to me to keep my wheels and brakes. That's just too much money to do axles and then get brakes and new fancy wheels.
I would like it. I'm running a dana 30 on my 15 jeep jku with 35's, no lockers, but has been sleeved and gusseted. THX Anthony!!!!!!!
I love the music you looped into this one. Gives me a nostalgic Dragon Ball Z vibe. Always professional and honest videos. I watch every one of them all the way through no matter what.
Thanks so much... really appreciate the support and feedback!
Dude that’s awesome!!! I can’t believe how clean you stayed during that swap...I need t wear full ppe and I’m still covered in dirt 😂🤣😂🤣😂
HAHA!
Jason, your videos are the best on TH-cam. You never disappoint. Thank you for the quality you put into your work.
Wow, thank you!
At least they were things I wanted to do anyways :)
Then I started noticing a slight cupping on the outer edge of my tires. But the shop says dead on! So I found this article and repeated it exactly. and guess what. my Death Wobble went away.
wranglertjforum.com/threads/how-to-align-your-jeep-wrangler-tj.85/
You got lucky with your eye alignment but I played with mine adjusting and driving: repeat.
6 min long with pretty pictures.
th-cam.com/video/SUDMEd1bMZI/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=EngineeringExplained
Your Castor angle is also important. If your Jeep has too little caster angle, it can be a candidate for developing death wobble. you can adjust this with your Lower Control Arms and it should be about 6 degrees (best) on the Jeep. Having less or ZERO castor will also cause DW
Hope this helps
i did the same axle same metal cloak components and big rpm alum drag tie.. mc trackbar. toe in by 1mm at home corrected the wobble to nothing and perfect track down the road.
i took of the wheels put some straight edges across the hubs measured front and back..made sure toe in 1mm at front and it was soo good.
Sounds like a great rig!
Thanks for my Pinto fix! As always, great content, great upgrades, and appreciate the gratuitous Large Marge and DED Ram truck shots!
HA! Thanks for this... I'm a lucky dude to have that junk in the driveway!
Thank you thank you thank you! These axles don't get enough love! I simply can't justify the purchase of the other 'boutique' brand axles.
I totally agree!
Even if you go with the ultimate dana 60 you get so much more for $$$ compared to the others.
Would you be able to highlight the differences between this axle and the “beefed up” 44 that the JK Recon edition has?
Oh my word I can’t believe you just posted this! Thanks for the video!!! I’ve been debating the Ultimate 44 vs Dynatrac and Currie. My front Rubicon 44 is bent and has some serious issues. I’m ordering a new housing tomorrow!!!
Buy the J8 HD axle and transfer all the parts over. Axle is only 1000 dollars.
@@kruelzombieful It is identical to the Ultimate 44 isn’t it?
Nope
Thank you Jason!!! Your videos are the best out there - very practical upgrades and you include the struggles to make them real!!! Love the blue differential cover!!
Glad you got that!!! I appreciate hearing this from you!
Mike
Good point!
Great video, nice to see all the differences between a JK44 and an Ultimate 44... I hope they comped you for that alignment.
Thanks! I didn't bother dealing with them ... needing to go back after this weekend and new suspension anyway.
This makes sense!
Do I own a Rubicon? Yes
Will I be replacing my front axle? No
Did I watch the video in it's entirety? Heck yes 😁
Thanks!
Finally got my Ultimate 44, can’t wait to get it in. This ole Dana 30 is worn out! Great video!
Subbed. Awesome video.
Awesome, thank you!
Your the best! Great video I was hooked completely to the end can't wait for next video!
You're the best!
Just bought this axle can't wait to get it put in
Congrats... I still love having mine!!!
Very very smart to keep your thumbs on the steering wheel and not wrapped around it.
Good spot! Yes... training from years of driving crappy cars on rough roads.
That is awesome! And glad to hear from another like me...LOL!
Awesome video Jason. Thanks for taking us along.
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome video! Hands down! Simply great and easy to watch. Love all of the little "tips" you throw in.
Awesome, thank you!
I like it , by keeping it honest and real about all of it
Thank you a bunch!
FYI Cheers!
Thanks dude... saw that! My normal guy has done an alignment with these wheels just fine so it's just a thing. When are we gonna team up?
@@AutoEdits I'm off Sun, Mon, Tue. Let me know. I'll hold the camera.
Thanks for making this Video man tons of good info just waiting for the weather to play nice here in New York so i can get my ud44 installed keep up the good work
You bet... I like doing them! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Long time viewer, first time poster. Love the content! Just bought a 2017 JK 2 door and I plan to follow some of the guides in your videos!
Howdy and welcome to the comment section! Glad to hear from someone that these videos give a few tips to. My goal is to present the stuff that makes sense to me and let you decide what might work best for you. I learn a lot along the way and things that work for a bit might not fit later.
Dibs on the old D44..good upgrade to my front D30.
I just subscribed, great video dude! I finally picked up a cj7 last year and man did you hit a great point when you said put a smile on and keep wrenching! Broken bolts and death ☠️ wobble are no fun, thanks again
Howdy and welcome! I love them CJ7's have fun with that!
Great video very helpfull, been there when crap goes wrong like it did in your video i like how you kept your cool. I would have lost my mind. Appreciated you actually providing the torques as well. Thanks for the video.
Thanks 👍
Hey hey ! Nice he's back :) Good to see the beast
Hey, thanks!
We went with a Tera44 on our 2016 JK Sahara. Feel more secure when hitting the trails.
That's what it's all about... peace of mind when it matters! The Teraflex stuff looks really good.
my used tj came with the most severe death wobble at 45-55 mph. I loved it, I loved my jeep no matter what, and I eventually found a way to et rid of it entirely but Man it was a dead straight death wobble, never scared me just thought of it as a normal thing.
Sponsors get Autoedit Jason a car lift for his garage 👍 ,i think it could fit if u modifiy the garage door , great video
That would be cool!
I ordered a MaxJax four weeks ago and I just was informed that the shipment is here in my city so they will probably deliver it this coming week.
I think he needs to build a shop out back.
Nice upgrade, I have the sport jk and want Dana 44 locker kit for front and rear, but I need to fix alot of thing. However I did get the power stop z36 from your channel. Love them. Worth the 380 bucks.
AWESOME!!! Thanks so much for the support!
I had death wobble hit on a highway between a jersey wall and a semi truck, I thought I was going to lose my Jeep! Still have nightmares about that day!
It's for real!
Being that my next Big upgrade is the front axle, I was looking to Dana. Brah this vid really helped 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Glad to hear it!
moar beef! Another amazing upgrade and informative video. Cool to see the elocker in action too! Thanks Jason
Also the extra camera work didn't go unnoticed 👌👌
HAHA! Thanks dude!
Awesome video brother and thank you for sharing your Jeep journey. Been watching for years man and your content is some of the best on YT in my opinion. Cheers, Jason!
Awesome! Thank you!
I enjoy your videos and content, thank you for making them Jeep'n Jason. It's inspiring to watch for my own project, and helps me learn/understand various aspects I haven't previously considered.
Awesome, thank you!
Dana 44 front is totally fine for a jk on 37s as long as you sleeve the tubes and c gusset reinforce. The rear 44 keeps bending the axle flanges causing annoying issues. So a full float rear is preferred.
I've always jacked mine up from under the pumpkin and just gone higher until I could get the jackstands under it
Going high steer with a 3.5" lift & UD44's 2" raised trackbar bracket is a recipe for bump steer.
Welding the tubes is a solid suggestion
Awsome.video thanks for the tricks and tips on this upgrade... really loved the drone footage that was awsome.. keep the videos comin and stay safe out there..
Thanks! Will do!
I reckon you will need a steering dampener regardless just to be on the safe side in the event you go over a bump or pot hole while doing over 55 mph to minimize the dead wobble.
The steering stabilizer I got from Icon will blow you away... it's amazing looking and great!
Cool man, I have only seen the blue diff cover on Australian Dana’s.
I have them on my 44's. Bought t hem from 4Wheel parts after seeing them at Jeep Beach at the Spicer booth
I liked it a bunch!
With that high steer you better watch out on your passenger side when your flexing. Not only do you have high steer knuckles, but you’ve also got a top mounted drag link. So when your passenger tire starts to stuff the drag link might hit the frame rails.
Good call but since I have 3” of bump stop spacers this setup is good to go!
Excellent video Jason! You take your time to explain and video everything. The video aspect is above average! Keep up the good work! How is Pinto?
Awesome! Thank you! Pinto is getting older now 11... and doesn't like to hang out front on the rope as much anymore... but otherwise she is great!
I love your videos. I learn so much! The way you took everything that was thrown at you and still made it happen is inspiring. I wanna be like you someday 😅👌🏼
Oh shucks! All you have to do is start with something small and keep trying and learning!
YES I have been waiting for a video like this from you! I haven’t watched it yet but I’m sure it’s good!
Hope you like it!
Very good Video. Thank you for all the instruction and informations.
You are welcome!
Hi. Getting ready to do this exact swap in just a few days. I'm looking forward to it. Are you in Colorado? I see some trails (Penrose) that look familiar.
Congrats on the axle and have fun with the install... I live in CA but some shots are from the Penrose trails in CO!
One of the biggest regrets about being overzealous in wanting to skip to a 60/14b junkyard swap was missing out on the branded crates 😩
Edit: Was happy to see Pinto midway through, haven't seen one of your videos in a while and didn't see the puppy in the beginning.
🤣
Hi Jason, I really enjoy watching your videos, and learn a lot from you as I build and go off road. Also, I live in Newhall, and lots of scenes I can recognize! One question, where is the dirt road that you hit up quickly? I only know Rowher flats ohv, and is there anywhere closer than that?
Howdy! That's not an off roading spot just a dirt road at the top of golden valley rd
@@AutoEdits gotcha! That's all I needed to know for testing my vehicle! : ) Thanks a lot Jason!!
Awesome video! I’m happy for you and the easy death wobble fix😅
Use this technique to give yourself a bit more wiggle room on that flange th-cam.com/video/VCA3rd4dhIE/w-d-xo.html
RCV's are still another $1200 so bang for the buck is important at the moment.
love these videos Jason! been here for years and won’t be leaving anytime soon! great work!! keep it up!
Awesome! Thank you!
Always a great informative video. Does this axle have FAD or is it a one piece tube
This is like the stock axle on the JK which is solid... the FAD didn't happen till JL
I would love to have a 44 in my Jeep
@@AutoEdits Thanks. I don't need anything that heavy duty. Just want to match the front but can't find the section at spicer for the rear axles.
When you have death wobble diagnosis, always start with a tire rotation... but since you just had an alignment I would say the alignment shop left something loose.what gear ratio?
Nothing was loose but there was a lot of toe-in. I have 4.88 gears.
