  • Air leaks in homes can significantly impact indoor air quality, insect and pest ingress, and energy efficiency:
    1. Indoor air quality: Air leaks can allow outdoor pollutants, such as dust, pollen, car exhaust, and industrial pollutants, to enter the home, worsening indoor air quality. This can be especially problematic for individuals with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory issues. In addition, moisture can also enter through leaks, potentially leading to mould growth and further degrading air quality.
    2. Insect and mouse ingress: Gaps and cracks in a home’s exterior can provide easy entry points for insects and other pests. Sealing air leaks helps to close off these entryways, preventing pests from entering the home and causing potential health-related issues or damage to the property.
    3. Energy efficiency: Air leaks can substantially impact a home's energy efficiency. Leaks allow warm air to escape during the winter and enter during the summer, which forces heating and cooling systems to work harder to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures. This additional work results in higher energy consumption and increased utility bills.
Addressing air leaks is important for maintaining a comfortable, healthy, and energy-efficient home. It involves identifying and sealing gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and other entry points with caulking, weather stripping, and sometimes more substantial repairs or insulation improvements.

As someone looking to build a new custom house, this info is great. 👍 I just question how affordable it is, how easy it is to actually find someone knowledgeable to perform these improvements and the ability to trust the builders and tradies in Australia! It seems like an impossible task unless you are super rich or have the time to research everything yourself and even do it yourself 😢.

This is great but now what do I do about them. I've got the air conditioning issue but am disabled and can't fix it myself and can't find anyone that does this stuff?

Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels.
Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it.
We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes.
It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity.

Regarding recommended bathroom integrated fan/heater/light replacement. With a dedicated exhaust. fan, is it ok to vent it into the roof cavity as before? Or should you always vent it outside, in order to reduce moisture under the roof? Would that typically mean relocating the exhaust fan to the wall from the ceiling?

Definitely vent to the outside, ceiling is ok, still, and duct it to the outside, via an eave or a cowel.

Hey there, I'm in Sydney and I am really interested passive house design. How could I get a job doing exactly what you do in these videos? I have a science background, not trade. But would love. To become a energy consultant someday!
