  • Streaming promised to be the ever expanding library of knowledge and Entertainment. Unfortunately however that has proven to not be the case.
In today's video, we take a look at how I believe Streaming has failed us. And the knock on effects this will have to cinema and home video moving forward.
I Hope You Kept Your DVDs!

Hope all is well. I’m big into physical media collecting , I got over 200 4k movies. The pictures and sound is simply better on a disc and don’t have all the compression issues streaming has. God Bless.

Hello my friend. All good here! Hope you are keeping well?
Yep, I too prefer physical disc when possible but still use some streaming platforms for discovery 👍
      - And you are right, Compression and Bit-Rate are huge issues for some.

I agree, im 49 so have lived through all the media terrestrial TV, VHS, DVD, Blu Ray, digital downloads and streaming. Streaming is great for choice and its easy - but the streaming platforms are commercial, they want to make max profits so they host what is most popular. In turn this influences what is made - so you end up in the hell of purely market driven production. Everything is lowest common denominator for the masses, its why everything ends up being the same - its the same thing with music. It's the tyranny of choice, if everything is the same it's not a real choice. How are people going to come across Pulp Fiction, On The Waterfront, Apocalypse Now, The Shining, Ths Magnificent Seven ..? plus look at made for TV films, masterpieces Like 1989s 'the firm' featuring probably Gary Oldmans greatest performance or Scum or Threads - imagine making sometbing like that now? It would never happen.

So glad to hear from someone else who gets it. I 100% agree.

At some point someone is going to figure out that the 'death' (although it's really just erosion) of the physical media market has opened a very large potential download model for obscure and rare titles. I figure that at some point some enterprising company is going to create a gigantic repository for all the films and TV that you just can't access on Netflix or Disney Plus anymore. Very few of us can afford to subscribe to everything we would like to. Multiple streaming platforms are all well and good, but it means we have to be somewhat selective about what we watch; which is anathema to us completists and collectors.

I currently subscribe to x3 streaming sites. And even then, I struggle to ever find what I want to watch. (And alof of the time, they are well known movies!)
For example, this weekend I wanted to watch E.T and it wasn't available on the x3 I use.
      - Luckily I had the DVD. So dug that out 👍
I think you're right. Someone will (Hopefully) fill that gap. But whether it can be done legally is another issue. As they will still have to pay royalties etc to house them.

I'd love for it to make a comeback. Not so much for myself (as I have what I want/need) but more for others, who I am worried are missing out!

Streaming services have not failed us; in fact, they have revolutionized the way we consume media and entertainment. While challenges such as subscription fatigue and the fragmentation of content across multiple platforms exist, the overall impact of streaming has been overwhelmingly positive. It has empowered consumers, supported diverse content creation, reduced piracy, and brought about a new era of convenience and accessibility in the world of entertainment. As technology continues to evolve, streaming services are likely to adapt and innovate, ensuring they remain a successful and integral part of our media landscape.

You're points here are all valid. And like I said, I'm not against Streaming. And actually use it myself.
However like mentioned, my biggest concern is losing the older movies and shows.
      - These services/studios need to all get together and create a "code" they can all abide by to make sure media is never lost.
