I love all your DVDs they all have very detailed helpful judo moves and.i wish we had them when i was a kid . great for the young and old Judokas of the future........well done!
yes, or even when tugging on their gi usually makes them take a step, timing is critical as you need to take the foot before it is planted but their momentum realy helps alot on this sweep.
A good trick of setting it up is to push the opponent when you get your grip. Lure them into pushing back, then it'll be easier to get the foot sweep. This also helps set up a bunch of other sweeps and throws.
You could also replace the gi grab with a clinch like single collar or underhooks for MMA or no gi. Works very well for me. Keep the great videos coming!!
I've used this in folk-style wrestling before, but not often. I just pulled down on the triceps, instead of the collar, and push up on the elbow as normal. You have to cover the body right away when your opponent hits and of course NOT with your knee on the belly.
Oh, I hate when getting swept and the judo and jiujitstuka are so subtle at it. I like this because where it pops up in kenpo kata is rarely discussed with such sense. I have no audio on, listening to the Business and it is obvious what you are getting across.
It's all about the timing. They are one of those moves that you do in that split second when the weight has been shifted.I find if I think about doing it I get it wrong. But when I feel my opponents weight move slightly, you can quickly sweep.Usually when I'm going for something else.I'm an Orange belt and have just covered sweeps and also found them hard. But that is because I think about it too much.
De Ashi Barai = Advanced foot sweep, not "advancing" as the opponent can be moving in any direction, forward, back, side or circular... The action is to sweep his front foot. This technique is pure timing and off balance, it is difficult but extremely effective once you relax and apply power and technique smoothly and as naturally as possible. With footsweeps you can off balance the opponent, force movement or prevent the opponent from taking control of the tempo of the fight.
Im really good with forward throws and throws in general, im 6'4 so doing throws and using someone's body weight against them is what im really good at. I guess everybody has their natural strengths and weaknesses.
Careful when practicing this setup! Matt's partner could easily damage his wrist if he puts his hand on the mat. Beginners should grab the sleeve of the same side as the swept foot to avoid this.
What about a opponent that struggles with finding his harmony? (with other words, someone that dont just play around with you like in your Aikido classes) ;)
Judo is beautiful, I wish I was better at it. No strength, all technique. This again looks like such an easy and effective way to put someone on their ass.
Yeah i suck at foot sweeps, i have done Judo for 5 years and i still suck... and my friend's who have never done judo are good at it... very fustating. Whenever i do use foot sweeps it always turns inot a leg kick. lol
I don't mean disrespect, but never ONCE in my life, or in anyone's life have they ever seen someone do something without even the slightest struggle...There is always going to be a struggle to do a technique, it'll never be perfect. But the best you can do is to get it to as close to perfect as you can.
No art is superior only a practitioner, your closed view speaks volumes about ignorance , open your mind . for example UFC everybody must learn BJJ and Steven segal is a spectator
What's hard today is easy tomorrow. Every rep makes technique stronger. Keep at it!

Hey i trained with Matt a couple of times in jiujitsu a few years ago it's good to see him on here
I've always had trouble with this seemingly simple sweep. These pointers are very helpful.

Love all your content. Keep it up.
Steve Mocco is one of the best at this sweep.
I was talking about practicing the sweep, not doing it in a competition. In a competition, everything is hard to do.
I will be back very soon my friend!
Can I see how you demonstrate tai toshi, please?
I love these videos!!

by the stance and his hypothetical grab of the leg I can tell youre a wrestler as well :)
Well, not necessarily. In Judo, you do in fact bend over a lot like that. I do it as well :D
i find these sweeps much more effective when your opponent is moving towards the foot you're sweeping

It's all about timing & speed in judo!
Very effective in the street. I’ve had to use it defending myself and it ended the fight. I love ashi waza. 🥋✌🏾
really helpful vid, thanks guys!!
probably. I'm short around 5'7. :(
my only good foward is seoi nage.

green at judo or ju jitsu?
good trick with a lot of practice. hard as hell to avoid the single leg though
I like it! Simple and effective.
Yeah bro you've been gone a while...
Dang 8 years ago
lets see ari roll with matt!
How can you not do it? It's not even that hard.
you mean like when they are Advancing.....
thanks...
Don't get me wrong, I like this Australian dude... But I miss the no gi videos with Ari...

I'm great at foot sweeps, horrible at getting ippon with forward throws. lol
Aikido is a much superior form to this. No struggle just use the opponents harmony against him.

I suppose you're an aikido master. Go troll somewhere else.
