    Interesting if most of it already known by me as I have an interest in the history of my home county. Agonising to hear some of the mispronunciations especially of the Thames. But glad to see someone putting down a history of Essex as little is spoken about it usually with Wessex and Mercia getting all the press. Although it was ceded as a part of Danelaw there was clearly very little Danish incursion into Essex as place names remain largely Saxon in origin unlike in East Anglia and the north of England where Danish names abound.

      I'm sorry that I didn't do a great job on the pronunciations of locations in your home county. Though I'm glad to hear I was able to contribute to the historiography of Essex in a small way. Thank you for supporting the channel.

    Never heard of Camulodunum referred to as Caer Colun before. Where did that come from?

    There is no mention of St Cedd who brought Christianity Essex at the behest of king Sigeberht they good around 652 AD, building England’s oldest church St Peters on the Wall which is still in use today.
    On the matter of the Danes, there was of course the battle of Maldon (11th August 991 AD) when. A large force of Vikings pressed for payment not to attack but lord Brynoth called his men to arms and took them on ands sadly lost. The reason I mention this is that my family origins which are primarily ancient Briton also have Roman and Dane in them. As my family have always resided in the Essex area I can only surmise the Viking and roman blood got in during their incursions into Essex.
    Finally just to clear up how our counties in the south east got their names - they where originally known as the land of the east Saxons (Essex) the land of the middle Saxons (Middlesex) the land of the west Saxons was Wessex, the land of the `South Folk was Suffolk and the land of the North folk Norfolk.

    Okay, I just thought of this: Why has there never been a Norsex? Or has there been? There’s been an Essex, Wessex, Sussex, Middlesex...Surely there was a Norsex at some point. Please make a video about it if you know anything. 😁

    • @channellegendarium7677
      @channellegendarium7677  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is a very good point! There may have been a Norsex but their name didn't survive. Of course, the Saxons tended to settle in the southeast of England, so that might be why we don't have a Norsex (there was a Northumbria on the Scottish border).

    • @GrandPrixDecals

      No, as Englishmen, I can tell you that they never got as far as to crest a norsex because when the rest were made they didn’t have many northerly points until later like Mercia but they didn’t name it like that then

    • @thesenatorialist3993

      Love this video tho was awesome there was a historical flood in Essex which wipe out lot live stock and farm land you was spot on, was a story when I was a kid that the some animal jump on hay stacks and floated out to sea with the tide, and when the tide came back so did the animals *haha* ...
      There loads of underground tunnel system to mostly to do with churches, when they used to smuggle monks about.. But ain't really that interesting..
      Essex was the first place to have a church built in England (I think) place call bradwell-on-sea.. So holy guy sail his boat landed on bradwell beach used an old roman fort to rebuild into a church, where it stood was a barn once for livestock..
