I doubt I could even imagine what it must be like to have had the kind of father Will describes here.
It's wonderful to see good people succeed. Vexing to see bad people do likewise. Yet in both cases, it seems - at times - equally depressing to consider some of the advantages those winners have enjoyed.
On the other hand, there's something to be said for the understanding one can glean from a really bad example.

I've had that conversation with my dad a few times about my film making. (my dad in an engineer) I have had very limited success so far but I keep going. Yes I do have a college degree (it was mandatory in my family) so that if one day I do decide to quit I can become a teacher like every other member of the family. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

There’s so much wisdom in what he said and in his Father’s advice to him. When it doesn’t matter whether it works out or not is when we do our best work. But, when there’s fear about what will happen if it doesn’t work out is when it’s typically doomed.

His dad's advice about of it doesn't work out it's ok to let it go and do something else, very good advice. The entertainment industry is so hard to break into whether it's music or acting a lot of ppl waste so much time trying to get their big break. It really is about luck or who you know over talent.

This is so great to watch. It's rare you see Will being this serious. And it's not his fault. He's even said that everywhere he goes for interviews all they ask him to be is funny and do his greatest impressions from his characters. If you actually sit down and talk to him he's a very pleasant person to talk to without the comedy.

Wow, i really feel this. I'm 17 and i really wanna get myself into stand up, i did a few sets, they went good, except when i bombed one time, and that really flew me off the rain, but i got on. Jesus guys, this shit is hard and it really makes you question life, "thank god i have a college degree", that's definitely a back up, we should take no chances when doing something like this, putting our future into other people's hands: after all, that what it is, you just make jokes, and if people laugh you're in, you're famous, you're good, but if they don't laugh, well, you really should've finished high school. And this goes for every independent artistic job, it can be music, painting, acting, directing, you need other people's approval and that's scary, expecially if you're not confident in your skills, but you should always be, if you don't believe in what you do, why should someone else believe in it?

Will doesn't go into it here (but has on other pods), but his dad, Roy Lee Ferrell, played saxophone and keyboards for the Righteous Brothers. While playing a between tour bar gig, a record exec was blown away and signed Roy Lee to record an album. Fast forward a few months and Roy Lee was preparing to tour in support of the album, and it turned out that, unknown to Roy and the exec who'd signed him, the label had been set up by the parent company as a front to evade taxes. The company shut down and the record was never released, and all of the copies of the album sat in a warehouse, undistributed. So, his advice that the big break relies a lot on luck comes from very hard personal experience.

I'm sure it's out there on the Internet somewhere, but I'd love to hear this kind of interview where he talks about auditioning for SNL. I mean the events leading up to the audition, not the audition itself.

People are surprised why comedy actors like Will are so well-spoken. Being funny somehow needs a lot of wit and knowledge. If not, then everyone would be legitimately funny, both on-the-spot and situational.

The title of the show is pretty ironic, but I like what you're doing here. Keep up the good work.
