The fact that there was only one wreck is a miracle. So many drivers with no situational awareness. It is mind boggling. Some on the right are going extremely fast(yes i know it's sped up) and just asking for a wreck.
This is literally a once in a life time thing for people down there, I live in north Alabama and it's once ever 5-10 years to even see snow / ice. Reason why we close down even at a chance of ice or snow.
As a retired truck driver I can tell you there were two types of vehicles that you watched out for one was four wheelers towing anything and rental moving trucks. The drivers were inexperienced and didn’t know how to handle the vehicle.
Did you see all of the proffesional operators tail-gaiting and cutting other slower moving vehicles off. I'm guessing you didn't! There was plenty of idiots on the road at this location, in all types of vehicles!
I live there and folks do not care. Many have no insurance either. Montgomery is the armpit of Alabama now. Lived there 50 years and it is a shell of what it once was. Let's just say that the reason is mostly (95% +) due to the change in leadership from one political party to the other. Under the old regime, things were good. New regime has failed miserably. You can research who was in charge a decade or two ago vs today. That's ll you need to know.
As a Southerner that has experienced 21 inches of snow in my lifetime and occasional on and off ice storms. I can honestly say it taught me a life lesson from what the Yankees go through. I want to thank them for helping some of us in that department. Because at the end of the day we’re all Americans. 🇺🇸😂👍💯
I was born in the Mohawk valley in upstate NY.when I was young I remember snow piled up on the side of the road 10ft tall. Its kinda crazy but I live 35 0:45 miles south of this overpass in Greenville Alabama. This overpass is at I65 south and Fairview avenue going south out of Montgomery.A very tricky HWY.
"Because at the end of the day, we’re all Americans." Sure doesn't feel like it anymore, with the billionaires taking over and turning the country into an oligarchy, while a crazy man rants and raves about the enemy within and is still whining about 2020.
One thing a lot of northerners don't realize (and I am one from Maine) is that with the generally warmer ground temps down south, they'll get an icier layer on the ground while up here it may remain as only snow on the pavement.
Many Southerners don't have a lot of practice driving on icy roads but as this is gonna happen more and more often you need to get used to it. 1. Slow the F down! 2. Keep your distance from other vehicles to give you more time to react. 3. Don't turn, brake or accelerate too quicky. 4. Stay the F home! Being a lifelong resident of the North East I consider myself a decent driver in winter weather. It's the other drivers I worry about, so I will stay home if I can. When I was still working and we had a snowstorm and the other employees would leave early I'd stay put knowing the roads would be clogged with everyone else going home early and they'd be in the way of the plow crews. By the time I headed home the roads would be mostly empty and in better shape. Oh, and front wheel drive helps a bunch.
That is a lotta snow ❄️ for them. Having lived in Pensacola until 2006, i don't remember this much snow ever falling. Folk aren't used to that amount of snowfall. Where I live now in Tennessee we can get that much. Prayers for the folks who are going through this, stay safe and drive safe.
that guy is an idiot he barely wrecks so he takes his dog out of the truck and walks around the freeway on ice when he could have drove it out of there
Depends. The worst ice is around 32 degrees to drives on because you end up with a small layer of melted water on top. Once you get to maybe 15 degrees and below, that ice is pretty easy to drive on with winter tires. Snow varies a bit too, powdery snow vs wet snow. It all depends.
Now it's a good reminder to go slow on icy conditions mostly on Bridges call Black Ice it's black ice do you see those Vehicles slipping and sliding ice cover bridge even though there's going slow play slipping even though when they're slow it's slippery
Even though people going slow they still lost control on black ice on the bridge nearly causing crash what does semi truck pulling a trailer almost jackknifed because of the black ice
You really need to give yourself a lot more space in between vehicles in this kind of driving situation. Slow down, use brakes very gently and cautiously. Don’t try to make any sudden movements or abrupt turns. It just requires a much more cautious approach. And ICE is always unpredictable! You still have some traction in snow, but ice is a whole ‘nother subject. That’s why they always advise to stay home if possible, and give them time to try to clear and treat the roads. Hope everyone stays safe during this crazy weather!
I’m from Canada and while in Florida someone asked me what type of weird tyres I had on my Travel Trailer, I told them they were on road / off road winter tyres same as my pickup. Weather like this is the reason I do that.
I grew up driving in horrible winter conditions in northern Michigan and yes that includes the upper peninsula. As a matter of fact I got my driver's license test right before a blizzard started and finished it successfully in it. ...Okay that out of the way I have spent the better part of the last 25 years living in the south including Orlando Birmingham New Orleans areas etc. Everyone down here freaks out about any little tiny bit of snow and with good reason cuz they just aren't equipped to handle it however for some reason even in heavy ice storms they don't seem to think it's a problem and I will tell you that ice even lightly it's far worse. Up north we know after an ice storm or even lite glazing, to pretty much just stay home at least until the sun comes out and the temperature's rise. I currently live near Birmingham and there's a lot of hills and the fingers of the Appalachians here, it may be days even weeks after an ice storm for those areas on the shadow side of the Hills to become safe again. In the summer it might be different but in the winter there are places that are pretty much in shade most of the season. I've seen a lot of semis Valley in between hills on low speed back roads and get stuck. This video clearly shows a lot of people driving way outside what the conditions should allow. One of the few people that were driving appropriately was the person that actually jackknifed their trailer. He knew he was losing control and made a maneuver that minimized damage to his vehicle and trailer as well as potentially other drivers. It wasn't pretty but it worked. On the other hand you really shouldn't be towing a camper around in that weather so maybe I was too gracious with my praise.
As a lifelong resident of Michigan, this is painful to watch. That said, while we do have more people competent enough to handle winter driving in Michigan, we still have more people who aren’t able to handle it than people who are. So take comfort, Alabama, in the fact that even Michigan residents can’t handle snow and ice.

If there is snow on the pavement drive on it. Much more traction there than on the ice. Besides that little tip, people are just plain unaware. The only smart ones were the ones that slowed way down and caused the backups.
Look @ how they are driving! It was worse than this in Texas coming through Dallas in 22, and they were driving like there was not ice on the whole free way and fog, wow
Of those of you who are asking why there no salt trucks? I lived in the Atlanta area for 21 years, and this happened at least once each year, and in most cases they would not salt. Why, no yearly budget for it. I bet it is the same for Montgomery, which is further south than Atlanta.
That is wild. I know Fairview well. My old guard unit is there. I live further north where snow does happen. We got it a week or so before this. Montgomery and especially Mobile never get snow but this kind of made up for it.
I blame on the ADOT, the cameras did their job, the ADOT DID NOT. Doesn’t do a bit of good if you’re not going to use the cameras until after the fact. What’s the point in having the cameras?

Global warming at its best 😂

The signs have been up for decades and decades. "Bridge freezes before road surface" has meaning people.
Probably not so much with Alabama drivers who very rarely if ever experience these conditions.
Assuming you KNOW how to read!
He maid that lil ass accident bigger than it needed to be smh
😂😂😂😂😂😂 RIGHT, I was thinking the same thing lol
upstairs MAID or downstairs MAID? lol
MAID in Alabama?😳😬
I thought about how it was a small accident and he could’ve just went about his day BUT THEN I thought about insurance claims 😅😂
Legend has it the truck pulling the camper is still there!
That guy could have moved his truck at the very beginning. SMH.
Before de-icing the bridge? Wonder how long it took to de-ice the opposite lanes...
I was yelling at him in my mind, "move it! move it!"
that guy is an idiot he barely wrecks so he takes his dog out of the truck and walks around the freeway on ice when he could have drove it out of there
Going for the insurance claim
That dog was probably shitting all over the inside of that pickup after he smacked that wall. He needed a good walk.
Poor dog, probably has more brain cells than its owner.
The guy with the salt spreader on his pickup was in right place at right time. Bill the state for his services 👷🏻♂️
I was the guy driving the spreader truck. The tundra was stuck on ice. We have to wench her out
Should put right tires over onto snowy shoulder. Snow is grippier than ice.

Why I avoid traveling on highway in Alabama 😎 no one slows down.....no one....
Even though people going slow they still lost control on black ice on the bridge nearly causing crash what does semi truck pulling a trailer almost jackknifed because of the black ice
And unfortunately, what I see is a lot of people driving faster than road conditions permit.

There is a definite slick spot at the beginning of the rightmost lane of the I-65 northbound bridge

For anyone who thinks all Canadians spell tires "tyres", trust me. We don't. Only Brits and snobs spell it that way.
@ I guess I’m an English expat.
The best part of this video is the film speed. 😂
Radio announcement...
"The road conditions are terrible. See how closely you can drive to the vehicle ahead of you."
And everybody obeyed.
So many people lacking situational awareness in this video.
Through the video, you can see the ice on the overpass get shinier and shinier, implying it was getting smoother, and ever more slippery.
Wiggly trucks!
Yes, Wiggly
Lol. The people walking on the bridge walk like southpark characters haha
Have to say where I live they pretreat bridges and overpasses very well. And it has definitely spoiled me.
Here in the "North Country" (Wisconsin), they "pretreat" EVERYTHING!
“Aaaaahh, what is that?? Is that ice? What do I do? Should I stop and wait for something to happen? Will I be dead if I touch it?”
My northern POV.
5:44 can’t believe that wasn’t a collision.

It’s easy to crash, when every car is going 200 mph. The video doesn’t lie.
The sped up version is good
Ha! It looks like the billboards recomend 80-90 mph when ice is present!
Look like a lot of “Oops! I crapped my pants” moments. LOL
People should simply slow down in icy conditions. It’s very simple.
