    I appreciate your tip “put yourself in your music” it’s a necessary reminder in an age where gear is sometimes the focus, not the user.

    • @RickyTinez
      @RickyTinez  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly, sometimes the nord makes its way to the storage shelf and when it eventually comes back out I forget how nice it is to hear myself play on top of quantized loops

    • @AndyHolt72
      @AndyHolt72 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, the focus on gear is so strong we call our users not artists or musicians. “The user formally known as Prince” doesn’t sound so poetic….. good point though.

    Sounding great Ricky. You've hit the nail on the head. Hardest part for a lot of folks (myself included) is to not get intimidated by the polished / final product / edited / cut stuff (music, tips, tricks, "hacks", etc) you see on social media and worry that you don't measure up.
    Do exacty what you're doing, /start/ and jam along. If YOU smile from it, you've nailed it. Everything else comes later. Don't make music for the likes or the thumbs up - make music for yourself and others will like it.
    Now to take my own advice and go break out the 0-Coast / 0-Ctrl since I've been thinking about them, and maybe the Play since its just lovely.

    I love those old Kerri Chandler tracks. One of the first records I bought was his Moods E.P. where the organ does the repetition, and lush bassline dances around that. And the marimba noodling is a nice touch. A more recent house track that I loved the feel of is Kareem Ali - Black Jazz. Just layers of dusty funk. Nice staccato EP chords, wiggly worm synth, and a beautiful dusty muted trumpet to stone cold kill it, with Kareem just vibing an ad-lib. Also Ron Trent FTW, I Feel The Rhythm (Inner Experience Revision) has both the spacey synth strings, phasey muted guitar rhythmn, then the keys and funky live latin percussion. Soul Samba Express too, strings first, then the organ. Prescription Records were The Best.

    I bought a second hand Nord Electro 2 for a good price during lockdowns, and my playing has improved so much because I just love hearing the sound of the damn thing! Those strings on the 6D sound real nice - I’m surprised you don’t mess with all the tasty Rhodes and EP sounds on there, tho! Perfect for deep house jams. 👌

    Hello Ricky. You and I met at NAMM 2020 where you were generous enough to give me some advice about being a "TH-camr" and I really appreciate that. It is so nice to see you working with a Pro keyboard near and dear to my heart which inspired my first comment on your channel here. Keep up the great work on your music and with your many heartfelt teachings. In fact, this video has inspired me to do more "performance/jamming" on my channel and the importance of just "being yourself" with your music. Many thanks, you Rock! 🏄🏻‍♂ 🎹

    I'm so glad you made this video. One of the things I love about older house music is that, even though they were still using samplers and drum machines, there was still something imperfect and human about the music. That little bit of a ghost inside the machine gives music its character. It's like how different musicians play jazz standards. No one does "My Funny Valentine" the same way, and that's rad.

    Some deep philosophical comments in this video. But also something I onderstaand, like “normally it’s over there but now it’s not, because it is here” 😂
    But seriously, yeah having something you can play next to some programmed loop is really nice, and besides to the joy of jamming, also helps with coming up with ideas.

  • @1chrisanderson

    Love the Byron shoutout, I've been waiting too long the house scene to catch onto this whole 'live' feel of jazz-influenced deep house and funk. So much deep house these days is completely uninspired and formulaic. Tons of it is decent and has its purpose and place of course, but the genre really needs to continue evolving. Apron Records is a good point of reference for where I see the most innovation and forward-thinking house these days, but I don't even think the producers would call it deep house anymore.

    Great thoughts!
    Just a small comment - if you have GAS for the Nord keys or are considering buying something to cover the organic sounds, look into old romplers like Roland JV-1010, XV-2020, SonicCell or synths like Korg Wavestate, Modwave or even Roland MC-101.
    The point is that as Ricky said, you don't need the gear, you just need something that can play a basic piano/string/organ/whatever sound and there are literally thousands of options.

  • @baselzwei
    @baselzwei 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, Ricky, I totally dig it. I donˋt create any house music (though I really love your tracks), I `m more the synth-wave-guy. But: I really understand, what you are talking about and you are so right. I am using a nearly DAW-less Setup with hardwaresequencer, grooveboxes, synths and samplers and there is much quantisation, humanisation and so going on. And that´s o.k. But: since some weeks I started to record some Synthlines, Pads, rhythmic things direct into my DAW oder my Zoom R8 along the sequenced main arrangement. And now I got that special little extra in my tracks, what I missed before. I really appreciate it. And the best of it: it works with little impact. I donˋt have to play Chopin-like Phrases (which I canˋt) to make it work... And as always: great video, music and vibes.👍👏

    Sounded great to me as a veteran Kerri fan! Currently exploring this method too with my mpc and hardware. Get a loopy groove going, extend the length to 8 minutes, and jam. Then just edit out the nasty notes!

    I got a used Nord Electro 3 about 2 years ago. It is totally worth it. I have almost the reverse philosophy when it comes to music. Mostly human with a little bit of machine in the mix.

  • @ruscular
    @ruscular 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is exactly how I like to work, making background loop track and then use my Midi wind controller on a synth engine for the human side performance lead. I can record the midi information and make minor adjustment to the notes. Basically worry more about the beat that you are looking for and fix the melody of the note afterward.

      2nd hand nord electro 3 are great and a lot cheaper. many prefer it's organs to the newer ones. and honestly there's a LOT of love for the yamaha reface cp out there. just has tiny keys is all, but it's a really great budget option. super cool delay that does some fun looping stuff.

    • @warpeggioslab
      @warpeggioslab 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The nord is really meant for the gigging keyboardist. You can take one controller with a ton of ready-to-use sounds and plug directly into the house sound system. You're paying for the durability and robustness of a touring instrument, essentially. We can absolutely get the same or similar timbres from other synth modules, or do the whole business on a laptop.

Because of you I’ve been exploring house music, have a couple jams over on my channel. Anyways was wondering if you could do a video where you do some hip hop stuff with some of your gear, I know a lot of us would be very interested in seeing that. Cheap way to do this if you wanna do it in ~hardware is to buy and cheap old midi controller and an old Roland Romper - I got a JV1080 very cheaply and I'm astounded by how some of the presets sound - some of the other presets, well, not so much.

    I'm not a keyboard player either but I got a yamaha mx49 for the same reason - to add that humanistic element to the production. My wife plays bass in our band so it also adds that unquantized feel to it

  • @AndyHolt72
    @AndyHolt72 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Correct!!! put yourself in the music along with the ‘math’. I’ve got that Polyend Play and mixed with an old school Roland drum machine and a mid budget stage piano the setup has as much ‘humanise’ in it as to make it musical rather than mathematical. Full Polyend Play review please Ricky, because I want your full opinion of it. cheers

    Guessing the the patch name is using the Latin "Pacem," like from the phrase Dona Nobis Pacem ("grant us peace") and I believe is properly pronounced like Pack Emm but often hear (especially when sung) as Patch Emm ... which is a good name for a patch. ;)

    • @RickyTinez
      @RickyTinez  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      not much, i think you get a better screen and more preset storage and the ability to change patches while holding down a chord and not have the sound switch until the next notes are palyed (more voices basically)

    • @duncan-rmi
      @duncan-rmi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did exactly that- 4D, b-stock, for a grand (ukp). it's not the most versatile thing here- no multitimbrality, no onboard sequencing, very basic patch management- but it does piano & organ really well, the effects are good, & there's a decent sample library (lots of mellotrons). I bought mine because my real rhodes lives hundreds of miles away with band-mate.
      if you like rick wright's keyboard sounds with pink floyd, it is especially good at doing the 'plink' from 'echoes'. :-)
