  • Experience what it was like to live and work in Victorian Elsecar in this astonishingly detailed digital reconstruction.
    Fly through ironworks, collieries, workshops and village streets, surrounding by beautiful Yorkshire countryside. See Earl Fitzwilliam speaking to his workers, iron puddlers by their furnaces and the families who lived on our canal.
    Created by Martin Moss of Dextra Visual, supported by local volunteer historians and experts from across the UK.
    Part of the Barnsley Museums and Historic England Heritage Action Zone partnership. A legacy project of the Wentworth Elsecar Great Place Programme, supported by Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

    Marvellous film, saw it in Elsecar but glad it’s on TH-cam so it reaches a wider audience. My wife likes to browse the antiques and collectibles sales there, I like to stop off at the pub next door and enjoy a pint with a slice or two of pork pie or bread and dripping - takes me back to watching Dad go to the pit with his snap tin carrying his bread and dripping lunch.

    Fantastic re-creation. So when does world heritage status come?

    • @paintedpilgrim
      @paintedpilgrim 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Before that can even happen, it needs to get on the Tentative List that was last updated way back in 2014 and there are a number of hoops to jump through before they can even get to that point, and part of the finances for that would have to come from BMBC themselves and somehow I dont see that as particularly forthcoming. And whilst I think Elsecar and its history certainly fits the criteria of "To be an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history", that status comes with some pretty heavy restrictions.
      There is one place that is a little closer to being given World Heritage Status and that's Monk Bretton Priory as part of a wider bid by the Cluniac Order and its impact not just in the Catholic church but on the natural landscape, so MBP could well be a tiny part of that bid which has just been put forward on the French Tentative List

    Amazing and utterly captivating video presentation - total kudos to the authors and to Barnsley Museums for commissioning it. But when I visit the site all I see is a retail emporium. So disappointing compared to the wonderful evocation of local history in this video.

    My Dad went to work at the Iron Foundry in 1918. He was 13 years old. He must have thought he had gone to hell. Awful working conditions for so little reward.

    Nice film, emotional, nostalgic soundtrack, but doesn’t portray real life as lived by the working classes. Working in the foundries, mills and pits of that era was hell, as were the slum living conditions of nearby Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham. And if you got injured or maimed whilst at work, you were left destitute, because there was no workers compensation act till 1897.
