This brought back some memories! I served on the Midway and was Junior Officer of the Deck on the bridge when the F-14s from the Enterpise landed. As we were downwind of the Enterprise and not yet fogged in, Captain McGrail commanded the Midway to steer at full speed with the wind to stay ahead of the approaching fog bank. When the F-14s were on final approach, he ordered the ship to slow and steer into the wind in order to have enough windspeed over the deck to land the aircraft. Just a few minutes after the last F-14 landed the ship entered the fogbank and lost all visibility. Captain McGrail was an amazing leader and I was honored to serve with him and all onboard!
