Thank you Peter for your sermons. What I love about listening to your sermons is, you teach and not just preach at me. Most preachers they just preach at you and teach you nothing and you Peter are just the opposite. What a true gift you have from God, thank you so much.

To hear you preach is a Gift from God, I really felt my heart strings pulled. I pray that the lost sinners of this world would give their life to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ before it's everlasting to late. I thank God he gave up another man of God in this sinnfull world!

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. This passage from the Gospel of St. Luke is read on several occasions usually every 3 years. It can be read on The Third Sunday of Advent in place of Psalm 126 and/or Psalm 146:5-10, which falls between December 11-17. Ditto for The Fourth Sunday in Advent, maybe in place of Psalm 80:1-7 and/or Psalm 89:1-4, 19-26. It can also be read on that Sunday in the Gospel of that day, which is Luke 1:39-55. Advent 4 falls between December 18-24. It is also read on August 15, which is the Festival of Mary, Mother of Our Lord. It is also read as part of the Gospel of Luke (1:39-57) on May 31, which is the Festival of The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth. We light the third candle and a week later the fourth candle of the Advent Wreath. The light is getting brighter in the dark world that the world was living in and the heavens are about to burst open. I think of Carly Simon's hit, Anticipation, when I read this Gospel.

As St. Ambrose once said in referring to this wonderful prayer, "Let Mary's soul be in us to glorify the Lord; let her spirit be in us that we may rejoice in God our Saviour."
I too recommend the Scott Hahn book! Happy Advent!

Peter, your poem is amazing. Any chance of you making it its own video so that I can share it to facebook? I doubt if my friends would watch your whole sermon but I think many of them would watch your poem. It's too good not to share with more people! Thanks, and a merry Christmas to you, Mary and Oliver xxx

Thank you for sharing your beautiful sermon and poem. I'm Catholic we refer to Mary's Song as the Magnificat because Mary's words magnify the love of God and his greatness. Along with this passage we focus on Luke 1:38 as it is here that Mary gives her Yes (consent) to God's request that she be the mother of Jesus. Through her Yes she has provided a perfect example of trust and selfishness that we all need to model. To trust in God's will for us instead of our own human, most often sinful will. It is for these reasons why Catholics hold Mary in such high esteem. Catholics do not and never will worship her. We do Not see her as being a god. But, she models for us how we should live our lives and trust in God. When a Catholic prays to Mary all we are doing is asking for her intercession. Asking her to pray for us in the same way that someone may ask for a friend to pray for them. As a Catholic we never expect her to perform a miracle or answer our prayers as only God has that ability. So, why do we pray to Mary instead of directly to God. Well, first we do pray directly to God because it is actually God that has allowed Mary to hear our prayers and provide us comfort in the same way a friend provides comfort. Second, since Mary is human she models for us how we should behave. When we pray to Mary she points directly to her son Jesus. She shows us how to get closer to Jesus and submit our will to Him. When we display a statue of Mary in a Catholic home it is similar to someone displaying an photo of a deceased relative or friend whom they love. As a Catholic, we don't worship the image or give it any value outside of being a reminder that there are souls in heaven such as Mary or even a deceased relative that loves us and looks after us. I wanted to say this because so many non-Catholic Christians have misconceptions about how Catholics view Mary and think we worship her or graven images which we absolutely do not. You may find this book interesting by Scott Hahn, called "The Virgin Mary Revealed Through Scripture." God Bless and Happy Advent and Merry Christmas!
