    Info from Wikipedia
The Parodius (パロディウス Parodiusu?) series is a series of horizontally scrolling shooters developed by Konami. The games are tongue-in-cheek parodies of Gradius, hence the name (Parodius is a portmanteau of Parody and Gradius). It also parodies many other Konami franchises, including Antarctic Adventure, Castlevania, Xexex, Thunder Cross, Taisen Puzzle-Dama, Space Manbow, Ganbare Goemon, Lethal Enforcers, Tokimeki Memorial and TwinBee.
    Enjoy!

Mate, a few small corrections. The game you are reviewing here is Parodius Da! .. which, ok, was named just "Parodius" in some countries. Fantastic Journey was actually its sequel, "Gokujyou Parodius" (Imo the best game in the series).
The Octopus was a character introduced in the original MSX Parodius game, as he is central to the storyline of that game :D

    Nice :-)
Never played/seen the 8bit Famicom version. Yes, I never realised the had changed the dancing-girl boss outfit to a more respectable 'child-friendly' version for that port.
Funny as I always see the Mega Drive hardware as a stripped down version of the X68000 as they shared same processor and a similar sound chip. That said... the X68000 did have extra sprite grunt/colour pallete/and Background layers - along with its astronomical price-tag - lol.
As always- thanks for sharing, and Happy Holidays to you too :-)

There's secret bosses in the Nec version depending on your score not featured in any other game while the Snes have a special boss at the end of the special stage. There's missing animations on the PS1 and Saturn version apparently too (is it mean or the palm trees aren't moving when the cat ship pass nearby ?).

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

No, I saw on Saturn also the water animation when the chicken falls. It misses the big wave, also absent on Super Famicom, but present on PC Engine !
Ok, overall the Saturn version remains the best for a living room. But she's darker than the others, right ?

The SFC / SNES version has a stage not in arcade. The Saturn / PS Parodius pack version has an exclusive secret stage after Round 1 if you do a bunch of conditions which I've tried but never been able to access. The Game Boy version got a Game Boy Color makeover included on Konami Collection Vol 2 which is a bit better to look at.

Only the PS1 version of Parodius Da has the hidden stage in stage 2, shoot all the stage starting enemies, then shoot only the first one in the second formation. Avoid all enemies for a few seconds, then the start of the stage will start over. From there you go to a stage that is inspired, and a parody of the Battleship level from Thunder Cross.

Sorry, but I have to add some corrections to your video: 1) The Sharp 68000 version doesn't sound as good as the SNES version, and while it has fewer moments of slowdown, it is missing some sprite animations that the SNES features. By the way: The SNES version has less slowdown than the arcade game... 2) The PlayStation version was missing some parallax scrolling layers in some stages (which even the SNES port featured in all glory). The Sega Saturn port, on the other hand, was a pixel-perfect port of the arcade game and the best port available. 3) The 8-Bit NES / Famicom version was abysmal! talking about slowdown...

I have been playing parodius for years, in an ever ending quest to 1Cc it at 'hard' difficullty level and I have to disagree with your rating of the PSX vs Saturn versions. The orginal arcade has slow downs in certain sections of the game that the PSx reproduces sucessfully w
hereas the Saturn version never slow down, making it near to impossible to co plete. This isuue is not noticeable on normal, but definitely makes a difference on harder difficulty levels.

I have the SFC and PCE versions at home, and I have the euro version on Saturn in another city.
I can say that the PCE version is smoother in the menus than the SFC version. The latter is graphically closer to the arcade version, but it lacks animations on the bosses, whereas we have them on PCE. The HuCard version is truly impressive for a 1987 design machine, and is more comfortable to chain games than on SFC. This typing the TOP 15 scores at the end of the game is tiring.

Oh my, Europeans got so lucky to get this game and it was, and possibly still is, too much for the Americans. Sadly, this is the only Parodius game that got wide release in Europe.
NES/FC and GB ports are truly impressive indeed. Konami really wanted to bring Parodius to 8-bit Nintendo systems and they did it. Modern Konami would never do anything like that. It's weird how Vegas girl's outfit is changed in NES/FC port but not in SNES/SFC and GB ports. Must be due to graphical limitations rather than the Nintendo censorship.
SNES/SFC port is just as great as other SNES/SFC games by Konami. I definitely should get it and give it a try.
Konami did neat job with X68000 ports of their games. Konami also included option to have midis, like Roland SC-55, playback the music. If I remember well, the X68000 port of Parodius even allows to combine the FM synthesis of X68000 and midi for the music. That might be the best way to solve "the drum sound channel drop issue".
I don't get why many PC Engine ports of arcade shoot 'em ups have the screen to be scrolled up and down, considering the fact PC Engine has slightly higher resolution than SNES/SFC.
Even though Konami ported Parodius to as many systems as possible, why they didn't port Parodius to Mega Drive? If Parodius was ported to Mega Drive, it would be quite similar to the X68000 port but would look worse than the PC Engine port.
Saturn port is inevitably arcade perfect. Just like usually, both the Saturn and Playstation ports are just like the Arcade version but Playstation port has slowdowns.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Konami on the SFC were awesome. Sadly for the longest time they just had no interest in making games for Sega platforms. Thankfully that did eventually change.

Yakumo, you should do a Battle of the Ports involving Gokujou Parodius/Fantastic Journey some day. It had arcade, SNES, PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions (not counting the PSP version, since you didn't count it here). Sexy Parodius would also be great although that one only had arcade, PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions (again, not counting the PSP version), so maybe you are a little more reluctant with that.

@@RetroCore I can't tell you for sure since I don't have the Parodius Collection for PSP. I have all the Gradius, Salamander, Twinbee and Parodius games/deluxe packs for the Sega Saturn, but in the case of the PSP, I only have the Gradius Collection which was the only one that came out in Europe for the PSP, while the Salamander, Twinbee and Parodius Collections for PSP were Japan only and are now a bit rare and expensive (yeah, I know in the case of the Sega Saturn installments only the Parodius Deluxe Pack came out in Europe, in that case I got the Japanese versions of all the rest because I'm a Sega Saturn enthusiast/collector). Anyway, based on what I noticed from the Gradius Collection for PSP, for Gradius 1 and Gradius II that one includes the Gradius Deluxe Pack in either emulated or ported form from the PlayStation, while for Gradius III and Gradius IV it includes the Gradius III & IV in what I assume it's ported form from the PlayStation 2, and then Gradius Graiden in emulated/ported form. But they are the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 versions for sure. So it probably is the same for the other collections, which means that in the case of the Parodius Collection, probably Parodius Da!, Gokujou Parodius, Jikkyou Oshaberri Parodius and Sexy Parodius are straight PlayStation emulations or ports or whatever. Sorry I can't help you more with that, I suppose you would have to do some research to check it out in deep.

It's funny, for all the talk of how easy the Playstation was to develop for compared to the Saturn, quite a few developers seemed to struggle with it early on, especially with 2D games. Wasn't Darkstalkers ported by Psygnosis because Capcom were having trouble?

That's bullshit to the max, both 32bits conversion are near perfect without any tweak "à la Gradius III SFC", plus the fact they've pretty much removed any slowdown from Arcade, making them most difficult versions to deal with.

Jean-Poutre, A year later, but the arcade Parodius Da is known for it's relentless difficulty rank, much like the arcade version of Gradius III. No home port quite replicates the difficulty of the arcade version, because the arcade version gets amazingly harder, the longer you survived, and by how powered up you are. None, and I repeat, NONE, of the home ports of Parodius Da are as hard as the arcade due to the arcade using the same difficulty system as Gradius III arcade.

Retro Core Just thought I could know.
Also, are you aware that Konami ruined the series with their f%$king Pachislot bullsh*t?

Yep. You may be surprised to know that most Japanese game franchises get ruined by Pachinko. It's terrible because those playing Pachinko have no idea where the IP originated from.

Konami is no more. it's sad to see this pillar of arcade gaming finishing like this, KONAMI COME BACK TO THE 2D ! 3D bullshit.
hopefully we have the emulator to keep the games alive, sharing the gaming culture, arcade or not.
Konami have plenty of sleeping licenses that deserve to be revived (in a good way, not with a crap labeled "licensed game that sux".
like the others Japanese companies, Taito, Capcom, Namco or Sega (does SEGA wake up ? Sonic Mania looks awesome) don't surf more on the Retro-gaming phenomenon :(
also they should release all on PC ! i like the Gradius Rebirth, but really, i am very lazy to connect this shit of Wii just to enjoy it.

Wonder why the Mega Drive / Genesis never got a port of this 🤷🏻‍♂️ 👎🏼

    • @RetroCore

Because Konami didn't make Sega console games at all until Sunset Riders. This was due to an agreement with Nintendo.

@@RetroCore … that makes me very sad 😢 … pesky ol’ Nintendo with their agreements (middle age man pointlessly shakes fist angrily in the air vaguely towards Japan) 😂
