    Was considering buying one of these. I enjoy tinkering, but this is over my skill level.
    Very much enjoyed watching how you problem solved the PTO issues. Thx!

    These JD's are perfect for do it yourselfer's, got mine F930 for free. That PTO design is the worst PTO in the world! I replaced all those bearings, then a bearing in the electric clutch failed ripping the wires out I rebuilt the terminals and replaced bearing, hint on new bearings remove black dust shield and fully pack bearing reinstalling shield. Also, I removed springs on the pillar block and fastened it directly to frame with nyloc nuts. Made braket to install serpentine tensioner (98 v8 Dodge)works perfect. No more loose jam nuts. Once all kinks are worked out, these mowers are fantastic. I use mine with tire chains in winter with 5'snow pusher very maneuverable. One more thing mine had a differential lock lever on the(front) deck side of the trans axle and a hole in the floorboard. Made very simple linkage for foot operated diff lock! Good luck

      That sounds like a pretty clever fix for the PTO. I tend to agree. These pto's are awful! It almost seems like an afterthought for the machine, when it was new, in the factory design. I couldn't imagine paying a shop for all things it needs. It would cost a fortune, far greater than the worth of the machine!

    Please don't stop making them!! Awesome footage.. picture was much more clear than most.. and the mouse voice, in superfly mode, was fun. Me and my puny shoulders look forward to some good tips on that deck belt and tension springs. The book says its a two man job, on my 935 72".. but deep down, I'm worth at least 2 and half!! I told you I use tow strap ratchets.. but there's got to be a better way! Sadly mine does not have the handy dandy notch for a good breaker bar.

    i just wish you would have shown taking the pto shaft out im working on a 1984 f910 mower and im not sure how to get the pulley off the pto engine side as the frame is quite different good video has helped alot

    • @marktolman6037
      @marktolman6037  ปีที่แล้ว

      It was quite the process, ended up using a pulley puller, theres not much room to deal with...I unbolted the tensioner bracket off the engine, and also unbolted the fafnir bearing block and cam centric retainer on the front. The pto shaft can then slide toward the rear of the machine, leaving the forward fafnir block in place.

    I got a f911 which has the same pto setup. I had first the lever wouldn't stay engaged. Bungee to hole by F/R pedals solved that and the lawn got mowed. Fast forward 1 year. Mowing and finished all but an area to the barn. I engaged the mower all ok but as I approached the barn smoke started rolling out by the brake/ engage pto assembly. I was able to get fire out (grass smoldering). lucky me I'm in the barn. No notable damage to wires. The fuses are good but it now won't start. I have pto switch in that area. I will let you know what I find for the other views

    • @marktolman6037
      @marktolman6037  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you got the fire out. Hi, the bungee cord is a problem. Typically, if all the safety sensors are in place, the PTO will stay in place. The fact that the PTO won't engage is a safety feature in itself, so you don't keep using the PTO. Find the brake safety, and seat safety, see if the sensors are getting mechanical contact, then test them to see if they make a closed circuit when engaged. Best of luck.

    Dang I knew something was missing from my f935...it's the whole rear tensioner and bearing. The two screws with the springs are there in the bracket and nothing else!

    • @marktolman6037
      @marktolman6037  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are great machines, but they always seem to need something. If you do the work yourself, and dont mind tinkering. If you have to pay someone to do the repair work hourly, it could quickly add up to more than the machines worth.

      Thanks for the great video. Excellent work. I was trying to get a better picture of how the pto works. I'm pretty sure the belts would go to the pto clutch. I wasn't sure how the pto
      Brake worked. Is there a band that goes around it? I tried to find a diagram online with no luck

    • @marktolman6037
      @marktolman6037  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there is a band that goes around the pto brake pulley, and it can be adjusted to grab whenever the pto lever disengages. Most people don't want this, because it puts alot of stress on the pto and mower components, with the abrupt slowing of rotating mass.

    This video saved my life!!! Thank you thank you thank you.. Mine is a low hour machine but that fafner carrier bearing is gone and wallered out. At least now I know why it is so damn hard to remove this pto shaft. I agree it is a very poor design . I think I will eliminate the pto brake altogether . What do you think?

    • @marktolman6037
      @marktolman6037  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Howdy, thanks, glad the video helped! My PTO brake is there, just adjusted so it doesn't touch the PTO brake pulley. I don't have a problem without the brake, and it also saved wear and tear on the machine. Yes, the mower deck stays spinning for a bit after PTO is disengaged, but it takes a lot to slow down and stop that large rotating mass through the drive shaft. I think it was a mandatory safety item from the factory, but not necessary to function and longevity.

    Most of thos bearings you can get in some normal bearing shop.. JD uses usual size bearings.. sometimes some Japanese bearings... and those even Premium quality bearings (KOYO etc) are 3 times cheaper without that green JD box form JD shop...

    Have a similar mower f911 with 3 a cylinder yanmar gas engine, 60" deck. It doesn't take much to slow the blades down to a stop when mowing. Replaced the belt thinking maybe it was stretched out but that didn't help at all. Blades are sharpe. Would it have anything to do with the pto clutch? Any ideas?

    • @marktolman6037
      @marktolman6037  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you check to make sure the PTO belt tensioner is tight enough? The double belt on the engine side...that could make a slip. Or the belt on the mower deck.. so check to make sure blades are tight

    • @JOnesti20
      @JOnesti20 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@marktolman6037 I checked the PTO belt tension it did seem a little loose. Going to tighten it up some before the next mowing and see if that fixes it.
