This surfaced for me on TH-cam last night, or rathter the version with Astrid Joseph,
and I lay awake till way after midnight listening to both versions over and over again.
(Music is a health hazard.) My 11 year old daughter (I made her listen this morning)
is very upset that I cry when I hear the girls (and the choir) sing the song.
(It is like an African Taizé song.)
However, Hlumelo Marepula sings some lyrics over the others
that I can't find in the lyrics provided in the description box,
some lyrics that Astrid Joseph does not use.
What are those words, and what to they mean?
I was SO moved, by the song and by the singing. Lovely choir.

The extra words are Hlumelo's own improvisations, we will ask her to send us the translation.
This was Hlumelo's Swansong as it was the last time she performed with CTYC.
Thanks for replying, and, again, for singing so beautifully and soulfully that it makes me cry.
My parents did not have a lot of records, but one that I enjoyed listening to very much was one with Miriam Makeba, where she sang Hamba naye. I think that is where my love for African music started. The moment I first heard your national anthem, long before 1997 (yes, I am old now, but once upon a time I, too, sang in a youth choir😄), I fell in love with it.
Now I am practising my clicks to be able to sing along.
I wonder if the arrangement is availble as sheet music. It would be a lovely song for my church choir.

@2:24 she carries the theme of praise and augments the message by taking a sample from a song sung in isiZulu with the same theme ‘igama leNkosi Malibongwe’ which can be translated to The Lord’s name be praised.
@2:49 on the theme of faith, she samples a chorus sung in isiXhosa ‘ukholo lwami ndonyuka nalo, ndilubambe ngesandla’ which can be translated to I will hold on to my faith until the roll is called up and I ascend (into the heaven).

Role model. What an inspiring person. Also says so much about all the CTYC is, does for people, and what it means to its members as well as audiences around the world.
So incredible how this song is sung by different leading voices by the same choir over years and it keeps on sounding better and better. The high standard is been kept by this outstanding choir/voices. I/we are really blessed to listen to such beautiful voices.... 🙏

The sound quality in relation to the choir is phenomenal-- it was only the speaker I couldn't hear. Your choir is amazing-- while I live on the other side of the world (Winnipeg, Canada), I watch your videos and listen frequently. This has been Ms. Marepula's song since (I believe) she performed it with the Cancioneta Prague Youth Choir and CTYC on tour, and it's interesting to see how her interpretation has changed and matured over time. All the very best to both the choir and to Hlumelo in her future endeavours!

"Ladies and gentlemen, our time is up but please allow us one more song. It is a very special song for me personally.
Nine years ago a shy little girl, though she was not that shy, joined the choir and tonight is her last concert. She has graduated from UCT with a Masters in Civil Engineering, and has been offered a fantastic job in Pretoria, she has to start there in July. And ever since I can remember, it feels that long, she has been the soloist of the next song.

I don't want to badmouth the musical performance, because it is outstanding.
But as a Christian, I would like to ask the artists a question: When Jesus went to the sick, did he also go with a mask and full protection?
No, Jesus went to the sick, touched them and they were blessed.
He never uses a mask and that is his legacy. And everyone should think about that.
Why are you promoting the mask that doesn't work?
Respectfully sir, the choir is in no way promoting the mask. Only wearing one at a performance in a time where mass infections were on the rise in our country and at a time where mask wearing was (and still is) mandatory in a public indoor gathering. This entire event was fully covid-compliant for the time and we were simply following the regulations of the land.
