The single best explanation of edging on TH-cam. Thanks so much for taking the trouble.

3:34 that slow mo shot is great for seeing just what the kayak does when you lean over on edge, I never knew the kayak turned that easily, even before the sweep stroke.

Incredibly helpful. I've been edging on the wrong side!! I've tried out the techniques you demonstrated, and my "turn game" has already improved. Many thanks!

My mind is blown right now. I was also edging towards the wrong side 😂

I keep trying to get this edging down but I am just getting this sharp of a turn in my Tsunami. I probably need more practice. I am more confident in the secondary stability though.

I have seen other demonstrations of this stroke + edging that show the paddlers edging on the inside. Can you explain why you teach this way? And what the difference is between the two?

2:34 "these sorts of boat turn best when edged to the outside of the turn " Does this infer that other types of boats turn best when edged to the inside of the turn?

Good question. I was wondering myself. On a sailboat, the edging is the same. On a motorboat the edging is the same. On a sup-board the edging is the same. Always edge to the outside of the turn to turn faster. It only works if you have speed. Lying still in the water with your boat and edging does nothing.

Hi Mike good video. Can you help with turning advise on fast moving water and corners. On a recent kayak adventure I was struggling on a few sweeping turns on a fast flowing river. As the river turned left the current was pushing into the right and I couldn't turn instead was caught in the fast flowing water getting pushed into the corner. When I tried turning my kayak goes sideways (bad) so I dug the paddle in to correct and straighten up and hit the river bank a few times. River was very shallow on the left. Deep fast moving water on the right all on a left turn.

Just poking around and saw your inquiry. Of course, it is not easy to address this fully without more information, such as type of boat and river obstacles, but here is general instruction for controlled passage through a left-turning river current. Start as close to the inside (left side) of the river as possible and adjust the yaw of your boat (before you enter the turn) to point at about 10 o'clock (45 degrees left) compared to the direction of the river current. Lean forward to adjust the pitch of your boat to press down on the bow and (as Mike says in the video) lean your kayak on its edge to be slightly tilted to the right, but looking with your head to the left (where you want to go), so that as you initiate the turn mid-current with a forward sweep on your right side, the bottom of your boat is partially facing upstream, taking the force of the current. It is a similar action as peeling out of an eddy into the current, in which you always face your butt upstream to maintain control. This is a repeated action with alternating strokes all the way through the turn and will keep you flowing in the direction you want to go. Too aggressive and you would shoot too far to the left and hit the inside bank. Too relaxed and you will be swept to the right and hit the outside bank.
