From the album "Seasons End", obviously the first after Fish, the first with Hogarth, the first in a row of incredible pieces of music - but you know that already! 🙂
It is good to see and feel how timeless the music of Marillion is. Your comments about majesty and luxuriating made me appreciate your style of reaction more and more. Thanks for the little rabbit hole Marillion has become. If you haven't listened to This Strange Engine you will be again flabberghasted, I am sure.
No, it's not. It is the final movement of "The Leavers", an epic tune that should be reacted to in its entirety, although by itself, due to its subject matter, it is a fine way to top off a concert.
OOOOOH! Jim, I've been waiting for you to listen to this one! Gonna come back to this once I've watched it ... :) OK, back now, had a huge grin on my face the whole time. This song is a great example of why I've always said that if you look up 'crescendo' in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of Marillion. As others have no doubt already mentioned, The Space is from "Seasons' End", their first album with Steve Hogarth. His voice cracks a bit - hell, mine does too when I try to sing songs from over 30 years ago - but there's so much character and emotion in it. You've mentioned Rothery in comparison to David Gilmour before, and Rothers makes no bones about Gilmour being one of his major influences.
That’s Christmas in March ! Because you do another Marillion Song ! So happy ... You could listen to The Invisible Man... A true Rollercoaster of emotions.
@@JimNewstead I think we can do both together :-) ... it's a really long piece of music and Steve Hogarth once said to the audience after the last note had faded: thank you for listening so carefully to such a long piece of music...thank you very much...it has touched me....okay Jim i'm looking forward to the brave 2013 concert with you !! :-) come on
Excellent, so pleased to see you head back to Marillion :) You will also like the track “Go!” from the same gig, the audience participation light show towards the end of the track is wonderful, you need to see the faces of the band :) This is from the “with friends from the orchestra” album and tour, which was amazing. The lyrics also refer to the damage someone can cause in others lives and never be away of it (the section about the tram); H witness a tram hit a parked car in Amsterdam and just carry on when he was with his previous band The Europeans; and thought it was a good metaphor for what can happen in some people’s lives, so the story goes :)
we were there on the night, sat near the front just up on the right, actually sat next to mark kellys brother who was in tears at the end of this song. H's voice had been dodgy on the build up to this show and there was some doubt as to whether he could sing this - he certainly delivered on the night. The love for the band from the audience during this show was a physical thing you could actually feel. Seen them over 100 times and this was a bit special.

Easily my favorite song of the Hogarth era. Brave was a great album but IMHO the band never quite reached the heights of this first post-Fish album again.
For many the Seasons End was the last Marillion album, if not the Clutching At Straws wasn't it. For me Seasons End was exiting moment, because it showed that Marillion wasn't done. I liked H's vocal sound right from the start and I was happy he wasn't a poor copy of Fish. Seasons End also showed how Marillion had and still have a strong sound of their own. I do agree with #sequentialscott that you must get the Brave!
@@JimNewstead The notes on 'Brave" say "Play it loud with the lights off." I *strongly* urge you to try that on the first listen. It is *so* powerful and moving. The whole album builds to the final guitar solo in 'Falling From The Moon', so gorgeous it moves me to tears every time.
Nobody does it like marillion jim, absolutely brilliant band from the members through to managemen, and of course the fans, hope you have managed to update your collection with disc from the H era, plus new album arriving some.
Yippee I get to watch one of your videos again please make it sooner so I can watch Marillion( I can’t wait for over a year) again) Please do the AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL song Strange Engine Live
Surprised someone else hasn't mentioned this, so I will. I think 'chamber orchestra' is about right. It's a string quartet plus Flute and French Horn. This is a relatively recent addition. The last tour was performed entirely with the sextet, to go along with an album of old tracks dusted down with the added orchestral arrangement. The previous tour featured the sextet for half of the set, with FEAR performed just by the band - the Albert Hall video comes from that tour. Before that, they'd just used strings on a few occasions for convention weekends I think. The 'Friends from the Orchestra' album is probably a good place to start with Hogarth tracks, as it's an excellent selection of highlights from his era, and they're very nicely updated in general, though very much on the mellower side, to blend well with their tame mini-orchestra. I suspect the next tour, assuming it's after they finally manage to release a new album, will be just the band, but that's purely a guess. If you want tickets, better get in quick, I think some venues are sold out already.
The orchestral instruments really added something special to this. Who knows if there will be any concerts this year? We live and wait. Missing live music so much.
Jim, you should really check out Mark Kelly's band called Marathon. I suggest the track "Amelia" Can't post the link here without the whole post disappearing, but just put "Mark Kelly Amelia" into the YT search. First link is a live/studio show of the song - amazing stuff, as is all the album.
Thank you for this video!! Maybe my favourite Marillion song!! And album!! (Seasons End). They have taking it down a whole step from Bm to Am, so it's not quite the same! The studio-version is better, but I must say - this version isn't far behind!
If you plan to listen to some Hogarth era then i'd begin with, in no particular order :- Seasons End (his fiirst with the band) F.E.A.R. (most recent) Afraid Of Sunlight (Steve Rothery rates this as all round their strongest) Marbles (the come back after a couple of less good albums) Brave (the concept album) And also you should listen to the track 'This Strange Engine' which isn't on any of the above - constantly voted by fans as one of their best.
I really loved Marillion when Fish was singer. And I loved the first albums with the new singer. I lost interest after the album Marbles. This is from the excellent album Seasons End. Hollidays in Eden. Afraid of sunlight are also excellent albums. I can’t remember how good Brave was.
Good shit Jim. I actually enjoy the music in the H era even more than the Fish era. Of course the Fish era was amazing as well. If you like Steve's guitar, listen to his solo album.

Yippee I get to watch one of your videos again please make it sooner so I can watch Marillion( I can’t wait for over a year) again) Please do the AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL song Strange Engine Live
It's been a while, I know. Soz!
LOVE your reviews ... Quick Request: Karmakanic - "Two Blocks from the Edge" or "Let in Hollywood" ... cool old stuff.
Cheers Kevin, never heard of them (no surprises there!) so will add to the list. Thanks.
Have you listened to the Marillion track ‘Blue Sky Above The Rain’? It’s truly epic.
Marillion my favorite band in Fish era or in Hogarth era ❤❤
Marillion is awesome but Marillion with an orchestra at the RAH is beyond sublime
Please Check from Marillion the New Kings.....
I suggest the track "Amelia"
Can't post the link here without the whole post disappearing, but just put "Mark Kelly Amelia" into the YT search.
First link is a live/studio show of the song - amazing stuff, as is all the album.
Have a look at polish band Riverside if you've never heard them before. Similar vibe but maybe slightly heavier.
Thank you for this video!! Maybe my favourite Marillion song!! And album!! (Seasons End). They have taking it down a whole step from Bm to Am, so it's not quite the same! The studio-version is better, but I must say - this version isn't far behind!
If you plan to listen to some Hogarth era then i'd begin with, in no particular order :-
Seasons End (his fiirst with the band)
F.E.A.R. (most recent)
Afraid Of Sunlight (Steve Rothery rates this as all round their strongest)
Marbles (the come back after a couple of less good albums)
Brave (the concept album)
And also you should listen to the track 'This Strange Engine' which isn't on any of the above - constantly voted by fans as one of their best.
will always be the single best musical even I've ever been to. Nothing can or will top it and I've seen some amazing shows......
Jim... if you want a real laugh, just look up Abba messing about, very short.
I love the fact that h doesn't take himself serious... love it
I really loved Marillion when Fish was singer. And I loved the first albums with the new singer. I lost interest after the album Marbles.
This is from the excellent album Seasons End.
Hollidays in Eden. Afraid of sunlight are also excellent albums. I can’t remember how good Brave was.
Well, from the comments it seems Brave is a VERY good album! We sill see....
@@JimNewstead i have the album so it must be ok. I just can’t remember how ok it was.
Would be great Wenn you check some more symphonic Rock like : Arena IQ Pendragon Pallas Jadis
@Beaver McFluffy's World mystery is great i saw them live in Holland.
The best Song from marillion is The New Kings 17 minutes pure emotion. With Steve Hogarths best lyrics!!
Look in to Marbles or FEAR 2 marillion master peace’s
Nice sweet Marillion, but i miss A strong voice
I can never understand why a reactor, after reacting to a Marillion performance, can ever react to another band ever again.
Ah.... you see, there’s just too much great music in the world to stop listening 😁👍🏼
Good shit Jim. I actually enjoy the music in the H era even more than the Fish era. Of course the Fish era was amazing as well. If you like Steve's guitar, listen to his solo album.
Yeah.... so much material to listen to, so many off-shoots and related bands to explore. It's a life's work to keep up with it all!
