Reading the comments of the Japanese fans, I can tell they really appreciate all that you provided in this video. I'm a Japanese-to-English translator by profession, and have spent over a third of my life now living in Japan. It has been fascinating watching the Japanese game and learning all the subtle differences that help make us appreciate baseball more. My hat goes off to whoever did the Japanese subtitles for this video, for they were extremely well done and enabled the Japanese audience to understand pretty much everything you said. Indeed, in reading the Japanese viewer comments, many indicated how easy it was to understand your analysis, with some indicating that it goes above and beyond the commentary we get for Japanese baseball games here (which can be bland at times). There is one former Japanese baseball player by the name of Harimoto who has a disdain for the MLB, as he thinks Major Leaguers are lazy when it comes to the fundamentals. At least one Japanese comment in the thread indicated how your analysis puts him in his place, as you demonstrated how calculated MLB pitchers and batters are when it comes to each pitch. Yu Darvish has had some nice Twitter threads where he calls out Harimoto for his nonsense, and those can be fun to read. As a lifelong Cubs fan, I must admit my heart sank a little when I read that you had been traded to the Reds, but I have always enjoyed watching you pitch, and look forward to seeing you square off against my Cubs multiple times in the seasons to come. If you ever get a chance, I'm sure the Japanese fans would appreciate to hear your take on some of the successful Japanese pitchers in the MLB, such as pioneer Mr. Hideo Nomo, or how you would have approached a batter like the great Sadaharu Oh. I know I’m very late to comment on this video but very few batters will play this way, notice Ichiro’s position in the box, he stands close into the box by the plate, this technique actually shows how confident he is and how he DOESN’T FEAR the ball. In Japan we do this other at Koshien. This technique is supposed to scare pitchers from pitching inside because they don’t want to hit the batter so instead most of the time they’ll throw straight down the middle or away but batters who stand close inside the box will have more advantage of hitting any ball down the middle or away and if they read the ball going far away from the strike zone, they’ll let it ball. I hate these types of batters, they’re position tells you that they’re willing to eat a ball or hit it out or let it ball. These types of batters puts the most pressure on me because throwing inside becomes scary when you don’t want to hit the batter so you’re forced to face them head on. And these fuckers are gooood!
Those who talk smack about Ichiro's approach have never seen him in batting practice. When I was a kid, I saw him rifle more than a few balls 400+ feet into the right field stands at Comerica Park in Detroit. Dude could've raked in games, too, but he's a 3,000+ MLB hits guy for a reason!
