  • Mat Marrash gives a quick overview of selenium toning prints, showing sample silver gelatin images to demonstrate the advantages of toning your pints for both color shift and archival permanence.

    Good Demo.
I use Sel toning aswell. I believe it is so important to archive your photos for anything of extreme value. Glad to see another person embrassing the art of photography and knows what they are doing. It's the REAL DEAL!!!

Thanks for this video. Info is so scant on FB printing either online or in any surviving camera shops. I always print w/ RC and, like "embreefarm" says, shy away from FB printing b/c of the pain it is to dry and work w/. Thanks again! Can't wait to watch your next clip on drying...viva la film!!!

Mathew thanks for the great video. Seems proper lighting is a key here when toning prints. Would you mind describing your light setup in your darkroom there (i.e. color temp and type)?

Gloves and/or using tongs to handle the toned print are good. Toner lasts quite a while, so do not discard toner down the drain, it must be taken to a local darkroom for disposal, or some other waste management service.

How many times can you reuse the toner if you don’t want to waste or pour down the drain?

Mat, I noticed you are using the Ultrafine Fiber paper in this video. Do you still use it? I typically use Ilford MG FB glossy and have been pleased with the results. However, the Ultrafine is substantially cheaper. Just wondering what your opinion on this is. I have a number of prints that I am going to Selenium tone this afternoon. This will be my first time toning. Excellent Video.

Hey John thanks for the question. I still use Ultrafine from time to time, but not nearly as much as I was back then. It was mostly a budgetary concern, and for the price it's excellent. This is a paper that I would recommend toning for sure, since the stock color cast isn't as neutral as Ilford in my opinion. Thanks for stopping by!

Will I still get the same effect with my Ilford multi grade RC paper? Im still learning about darkroom techniques but am enjoying the physical process. Great video!

RC papers will tone, but the effects are nowhere near as dramatic as they are with fiber based papers.

Selenium toner is not particularly dangerous. Selenium *powder* is. Typical liquid KRST is a low dilution (
