    One thing still alludes me... have now gotten Brother sewing machine, but cannot figure out machine's needle threading mechanism ... will you consider doing video on this subject? Thanks so much!!

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      do you mean how to thread your brother machine? Is it a newer model? Usually if you do a search on the model number, sewing machine companies have created their own videos to show how to thread and use it. I don't own a brother and each machine is a little different in their threading process.

    • @88momart
      @88momart 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for answering!
      I've looked up the model # on youtube & found an instructional for my model... however, the woman teaching held her hand in front of needle the whole time, and so was not good instructions.! I'm talking about the built-in needle threader that swings down , captures the thread & pushes thread into needle before you let it go... looks very simple, but just cannot get it to work for me,. I find as I get older, threading my machine's needle is becoming more difficult... again, thanks for answering.

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      oooooh...the needle threader! Yes, most days I can do it but even I sometimes cannot get that little thing to work. it can be so annoying, so I get it! Ok, I'll put it on my list :)

    I loved one of your subscribers comments.... Visual learner.. That's me also. This tutorial is the easiest I've seen and thank you. May I ask could I use this to put sleeves in a bought sleeveless garment?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say yes but the biggest issue is that your ready-to-wear garment probably doesn't have much seam allowance left around the armhole so you might have to play with the sleeve pattern to get something to fit and then your seamline might not be at the should but a little more in.

    so I have a quick comment / question if you had done the basting thread in red it would have really shown up on the video because at some point I am guessing that you had 4 rows of thread. Two in the basting and to in the regular Stitch is that correct? And I really did not know about the puckering not extending past the baste line, that was very helpful

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      serger or overcast is the easiest. You can also do a bound finish with thin bias tape.

  • @dorothydavis8238

    I was hoping to see you sew in sleeve to show which side are you sewing from inside or underside side of sleeve which side makes it easy because am always catching my sleeve cap w tucks and have to take out

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I always sew the armhole seam, looking the bodice fabric...so I guess that would be the outside. I'm just constantly feeling through the fabric to make sure I don't have any big wrinkles but sometimes I don't know until I flip the sleeve out at the end. For the most part, I don't have any issues but it does happen sometimes. You're not alone!

  • @annie4424
    @annie4424 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ft his is the method I learned in school, and is the method the Big 4 pattern company suggest in their instructions. It's a good method, and with some tops, it's the only one that works. Personally, I prefer to set the sleeve in, then sew up both the side seam and the sleeve. That way, I have less of a chance of catching the wrong fabric in the wrong sleeve. (I think that's more of a comment on my poor attention to detail, rather than the technique.)

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's good to learn about what works best for you :D Thanks for sharing!

  • @ejshelby5460
    @ejshelby5460 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Prof, how would you suggest I translate the technique to leather garment? With leather, especially heavy duty leather, I obviously can't do a parallel basting stitch to pull the thread, I basically only have one chance right? how do I secure, since i can't pin either?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, doing the sleeve in leather is going to be tricky. That's why a lot of the times you may have a leather bodice, but the sleeves themselves will be fabric. You may just have to ease them in by hand and instead of pinning, use clips to hold it into place before sewing it. you can use clips like these: www.walmart.com/ip/24545444?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227018393168&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40942565312&wl4=pla-78881469272&wl5=9021433&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=24545444&wl13=&veh=sem

    Wouldn’t you find sewing the sleeve to the armscye easier if you laid it out flat, sew on the sleeve, and then sew side seams?

    This might be a dumb question. I have an arm hole and sleeve cap that are the same size, can I still do an in set sleeve without the ease.

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmm....I've never come across that but if it fits, I would give it a try. Maybe just put it in with a basting stitch and then try it on to make sure you still have complete mobility with your arm. If it works, then you a regular stitch. :)

  • @LisaJF
    @LisaJF 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is there a particular reason that the sleeve should be put in this way rather than sewn in flat before the sides of the bodice are sewn?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there are different types of sleeves. Kimono sleeves are sewn flat so there might just be an overarm and underarm seem. This technique is for the inset sleeve which is probably the most common type.

  • @angiecarey567

    the marker that you use on the material, is it washable? Just in case I made an error.

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fabric markers are either water soluble (disappears with water) or disappearing ink, (disappears after 48 hours). I usually use the disappearing ink (purple ink) for most of my projects because it just shows up better on camera but if you set your project down too long, you can lose your marks. I wouldn't use the blue/water soluble pen if your fabric is not allowed to get wet or dry clean only. I've accidentally gotten water mark stains because I didn't realize I had that kind of fabric. You can find these pens in the notions department at any fabric store. :)

    Does anyone know what’s the “pinking cheer” (in the auto-generated subtitle) at 9:00 for fabric that tends to fray a lot?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pinking shears. They look like scissors, but the blades are zig zag's. This helps prevent fraying on raw edges. You can get them at your fabric store.
