Thanks for your work, preserving folk music - that isn't usually digitalised - keeps the tradition alive.
You da real MVP.

Getting crazy trashed drunk tonight drinking whiskey and listening to Scottish ballads for Burns Night. Celebrating all the way over from the rolling hills of Northern California. Proud of my Scottish heritage. The Armstrongs were cast away a long time ago. I've never been able to see the land where my ancestors lived. But there is nothing more I wish than to visit. Thank you so much for preserving this. Horo Chall Eile and Hush, Hush are truly haunting. Hush, Hush is too much for me. It's a direct reflection of my ancestors fleeing prosecution and slaughtering. Fleeing to Ulster and America. Dreams of Peace and Freedom. It's hard to listen to those lyrics without bursting in tears. God bless Scotland till the end of time itself.
Hush, hush, time tae be sleepin'.
Hush, hush, dreams come a-creepin';
Dreams of peace and of freedom,
So smile in your sleep, bonny baby.
Soon tae be shipped owre the ocean
No use pleading or praying
All hope gone, no hope of staying
Hush, hush, the anchor’s a-weighing
I recently found out from my father, that his mother (my Grandmother) and her family were evicted from their croft in Sutherland by the Duke and his 'factor's fire-raisers'. They re-located to Helmsdale on the east coast of Sutherland after that happened and her father and brother found work in the fishing industry (herring fishing was big back then).
Apparently the Duke of Sutherland is one of the most hated people in Scotland for those that remember...
You should definitely pop back over the ocean for a visit sometime if you can! The weather can be a bit crap but it's a beautiful country 😁
WHY doesn't this have millions of views??? This man is a national treasure for Scotland AND New Scotland. I LOVE his voice and his mastery of the story-telling song.
Alastair McDonald really is one of the best folk singers I've heard.
Soon. I just shared it on two music groups on telegram
Joe Strummer once mentioned how there is nothing more common in the world than undiscovered talent.
Bloody hell! I grew up in a folky/nationalist house in the 70's, this was almost mandatory listening! Bloody hell..... Incredible listening to this again after so many, many years! As a ,now exiled?, Scot living in North Wales, I send you thanks from "Robert Bruce Murray"........... Suas Alba (Edit: Alistair MacDonald is one of the most underrated folk musicians/singers - incredible bloke!)
(another edit: published the year I was born... 1972......... Where do the years go?)
Sorry, but even after best part of 40 years I remember the track order..... Some amazing songs. Anyway, I am going to sober up, get my kilt on, grab my targe, dirk and claymore and set off to Derby.... or London...............
Class
God bless the welsh and irish i agree buddy TOTALY when the older songs come on its funny how they can take you bk in time CLASS
Exact same here mate, still love this as much as I did when I was younger
Love it
Wish i could like this 1000 times 🏴🏴🏴
Got this record as a wedding present in 1978. It stood the test of time far better than the wedding: still got the LP...divorced in 1981.Thank the universe for music!!!
Well done for not losing the record along the way! Wallace is with you today!
Get back with her.
@@lordmozart3087 Back to him you mean? No way. We have both since got other partners and kids! But I have kept the LP because I love it!
@@annepoitrineau5650 don’t say I didn’t try..😂
@@lordmozart3087 Thank you for your efforts on our behalf :) xx
Thank you very much for this wonderful music and history of Scotland. ❤️From a Scottish- American in North Texas.
This should be mandatory listening for all school children in Scotland
England is not your enemy my friend, the SNP is.
Nope, it's fantasy. We're all related, brethren. Look to immigration. Who facilitates it ?
@@stevehall9333 The tories and your shit government that serves the English people only. England's government is my enemy and always will be, I will never vote anything other than SNP. You should see by now that labour and tories are fucking terrible. Lib dems are idiots that support tory policies and the green party is a wasted vote. Who else do we vote for? The SNP is the only choice and the only party that has shown to be supporting of Scotland. Why the hell should I give a fuck what happens to England? I care about Scotland.
You wouldnt have the same outlook if your country was dictated to by another even if you voted for something. If you respect democracy then you will adknowledge that Scotland voted to remain in the EU. It's a perfect example of how the voting system in this country serves the English people and them only.
@@stevehall9333 Believe me my friend I know. The English are our closest brothers in this god forsaken Earth. We now face a much greater task of waking our Europeans brethren up to our imminent destruction. The English people have suffered more than any at the hands of the British establishment. The SNP are Globalist traitors who want to see ethnic Scots pushed to minority status in Scotland and have our primary school kids indoctrinated with LGBTQ propaganda.
@@stevehall9333 Aye, immigration, right enough.
Send all those Saxons back where they came from.
And don't get me started on those Normans!!
I got this longplay in the 70s and copied it on tape cassette, then, but in a very poor sound. I taught myself guitar playing with these songs when I was 17 - THANKS so much for this good sound quality! Slainte!
had the vinyl o this for 30+ years - pure class ✊
Alba gu Barth soar Alba 🏴🏴🏴🏴
Song at 8:07 makes me wish i knew my mother tounge, to be back in the times when scotland still had some fight left.
I know the feeling
Scotland never lost its fight. Remember that Robert The Bruce won at Bannockburn, driving the English forces out. The eventual peaceful alliance signed with England was as a result of Scotland going broke due to failed merchant/trading ship business ventures to the Darien region of South America.
England bailed us out financially due to bad business decisions.
Scottish soldiers have fought bravely alongside their English, Welsh and Irish brothers in many wars and conflicts since then as part of the British Army.
Also remember that Scotland has paid England back in the hundreds of billions of tax revenue raised from the extraction of North Sea oil & gas from the 1970's to the present day. Also, Scottish inventors, engineers and scientists contributed hugely to technological advances in the industrial revolution which led to Britain becoming the most successful empire the world has ever known. Plenty to be proud of I think...
Since I bought my first CD at Killiecrankie I love this laddie and his unique voice. And btw: I am german 😆
Thank you for uploading this. I listen to it all the time.
I got the lp some days back. Awesome songs.
The Scottish gift for melody obvious here
23:10 hush hush. Awesome to the max.
Absolutely Kino
superb LP ✊
I need to learn the ways to preserve the sounds of records digitally. This is history
SCOTTISH PEOPLE HAVE A LONG MEMORY
I had this album a long time ago and can't get it now. I love these songs yet some are so sad, I think on how they want to build houses on drumossie Moor that's steeped with the blood of brave Scottish warriors who sorely lacked modern weapons of the time dying or murdered whilst still wounded by the German kings son, building houses on that ground would by an insult to their memories. The traitors the Campbells are well steeped in the blood of the Scottish people as well not only at this battle but for the massacre of Glencoe, I saw a documentary on clan chiefs and even to this day the chief says he was right pity he couldn't talk like a Scotsmen but he's as English as they come listening to his voice shows that. The bane of Scotland has always been other Scotsmen
With regard to the building of houses on Drumossie Moor, it was Nicola Sturgeon's government that gave the go-ahead for that. I USED to vote for the snp all the time but when I seen what she and they were doing to Scotland from the inside I couldn't bring myself to vote for them ever again. Drumossie Moor housing is one example. Another couple are: destroying the iconic countryside with 400ft foreign manufactured and owned wind turbines everywhere and mass immigration just to give them the vote. When I used to vote for the the snp it was to protect Scotland not destroy it from the inside. You are quite correct with your comment about the bane of Scotland always being other Scotsmen (or woman). Best wishes.
Check charity shops, I found a perfect sounding 1973 one for like 50p
I'm just a rare American with roots to the center of the earth. Beautiful...
I was the only non-classical music listener in my family. When I moved to the US in the 80’s. I brought this LP with me. It’s one of the best! I only wish I could buy a cd of it as the record is wearing out.
Have you tried Amazon? They also sell used records/CDs
I'm English, I love it. Couldn't do it now .
Steve Hall 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love it man
Thank you for posting this!!
Épico
Nobody sings Parcel o'Rogues like Ian Bruce. This is good but that's amazing.
From Smith to Smith I thank you. Alistair is and always will be a favorite of mine. He is a friend and I miss him. I'd never heard of Ian until reading this comment of yours. Thanks for posting it. I have just listened to Ian's acapella rendition, and it is powerful and deeply stirring. Thank you for getting me acquainted with him. I shall seek more of his music. Take care and God bless you my fellow Smith.
the fire raisers
I have some of these songs on really old books dunno if they are even worth anything (wouldn’t sell them anyways) but it’s pretty cool
That is pretty cool

Republicanism isnt Scottish. It is Irish, American and French.
Scotland has been a monarchy since before a form of Scotland was even established in 846.
Scotland is not defined by a monarchy, we have proved that through out history ffs. Our greatest period in history was the Scottish people showing, by our own will that the King of Scotland could be dethroned and one who best served the nation would be risen to that office. Admittedly our geographical situaton did alot to stagnate republicanism in Scotland, however by the reformation the idea of a monarch who was ment to serve the people not the other way round was stronger in Scotland then south of the border. "The English Civil War" could not have happened without the Scots first getting pissed at a king who thought he had absalute rule over his "kingdom". Don't mess with the Kirk! XD
Wha song is at 8:07
Hi,just added the Titels
@@jochvomberg5541 thanks mate
To be perfectly honest this song brought me to tears.
It is I that am sorrowful
On a hillock, great is my grief
I saw my love
He did not recognize me yesterday
He neither noticed me nor enquired
He didn't ask me how I was
I saw you going up
To the cattlefold
He passed me by
On a gray horse with a light step
On a nimble-footed horse
Lively at jumping the bog
My baby is in my arms
I am without sustenance under the sun for him
I was not at fault
It was himself that was at fault
That I wander around alone
Seeking food of every woman for him
God Save England. God Save Edward I, Hammer of the Scots. Basically tuned up the entire British Isles to protect England from being invaded all the time. And then all the wee countries complain about it and make rather good songs about it.
@Wow-ys2jrbased
Edward was a Norman like almost all the nobles of that time in England... And a lot of Scotland for that matter too, by that time. The English were the first to be conquored by the Normans... do you forget that? Look up the Harrying of the North...
I ask myself if I am the only one that recognizes that the first seconds of "German Lairdie" are also the first seconds of the German national anthem :).
Just as a matter of fact the anthem was only adopted by Germany in 1922 , it was the Austrian Royal anthem for far longer (over a hundred years) and was originally composed decades after the 45 rebellion.
This is the only place in existence where I can listen to “the fire raisers”
I can't find it anywhere else either which is a shame because it's a belter of a song!
Yes I cant find it anywhere either
That is definitely my new favorite song! Damn shame there isn’t another video with just that song.
My late dad and lost sister and myself use to listen to this record a lot when we were young. I am so grateful for you sharing it on here. I hold it very close to my heart.
I was gifted a copied cassette tape of this album and completely loved it. I haven't been able to find it on CD. ('Tis a sad thing...)
This album shaped me as a man when I was a wee boy
Greetings from Ukraine

The Wallace ! This reminds of Of sketch with Ricky Fulton and Gregor Fisher doing a send up of the Corrie’s The Curries on here on YT !
The version of Harlaw on this is way better than the other version on youtube which are also by McDonald but have a slower pace than this. Wish there was a single version available on youtube.
Both are fine depending on the mood
I grew up listening to this album in the 1970s .. fantastic
