@@chrisminns8815 goty isn't the only category my guy. There are 30 categories. It should've at least gotten a nomination for best sim/strategy, especially considering some of the other contenders for that category.
1:31 - You mentioned a standalone DLC got nominated for GOTY - Shadow of the Erdtree isn't Standalone, it requires Elden Ring and isn't really playable until about 40hrs in!
The reason why I started watching the show is because of Valve. Jeff is good friends with Gabe Newell and every year I’m hoping half life 3 gets revealed l! Been getting fooled for a decade now!
Thanks Snutt, helped a lot! Very balanced take on the Game Awards, that I can can totally agree with. The direction is good with great anouncements, sufficient time for various developers to place emphasis on sth. and a great show with selected celebrities. That way it was really entertaining, informative and great to watch. For me the Voting and Nomination process was this years weakness and has to improve. How to handle DLCs, Remakes/Remasters and Early Access titles needs clarification (in my opinion own categories for the first two). And because of the variaty of the industry some categories might need more nominies. And where was Satisfactory? Would have truely deserved nominations for Best SIM/strategy, Best community support and personally even Game of the year
Thanks for the level headed dive into The Game Awards Snutt! Already loving the direction you're taking the channel. "not 100% fan vote dominated -> prevent social engineering" One of the reasons gacha games are so high in the community pick section is because they offer rewards to players if they win GOTY, so players will vote for them even if they don't believe they are the best GOTY candidate. That said, the voting panel probably isn't as diverse as it could be. It's predominantly western, so games that are universally adored in eastern markets aren't necessarily faithfully represented in the panel. But it's also not as easy as better internationalizing the panel as various parts of the world are more nationalistic than others & would largely vote along national pride based on where the game was made vs the game content itself
I think the winners are generally deserved. I think its great we have multiple game of the year awards in general though be it BAFTA, Golden Joystick etc. The Game Awards has its place but its by no means definitive its nice that gaming has gotten this big though and hopefully we maintain a strong indie scene along side it
I had forgotten what your independent content felt like and this refreshed my excitement for the future of what you will make. Wonderful to have this channel with steam in it's engine again! Merry Christmas Snutt, would love to see a Eevee Christmas card somewhere ;]
As a disposable dev, I'm starting to hate the event more and more. This year's event was a big fuck you with the "gamechanger" award, which was there to deflect the state of games jobs and turn it into a feel good story. Nothing wrong about the guy who got it, it was just completely tone deaf for an event where big studios come together to pat each other in the back while having record profits.
Best ongoing was on stage, the live service money must had been good... Art and OST/music was not on stage... the event was close to 4 hours long, if i remember right. There were 3 to 5 awards given on stage. There was the "pre-show" where they tried to empty the awards closet so they didnt need to mention them in "main show" This was extremely BAD awards show, kinda bad show in general. This show was not about you or other devs, or the works of the year. It was just looooong ad, with 15-20% awards and speeches. I would rather watch the twitch ads that pop up, than this shit again. The fucking naughty dog game at the end, had hidden adidas and porche ads in the video... disgusting show.
The only bright spot was Swen Vincke's speech. He addressed exactly what's wrong with the gaming industry, and it's something people really need to hear.
You have to have winners decided by this blended vote.. If you leave it to the internet you end up with Boaty McBoat Face. That's just how the internet rolls.
The biggest issue with fan-only votes IMO is whoever spends most money on marketing wins. Since most people only play maybe 1 of the selected games, 2 at most. And people would just vote whichever game they happened to play in this timeline. And bigger marketing exposure means it has more chance of people playing it, or even just hearing about it. I have known people who has not played any of the games and would just vote whichever one they know existed or "looked cool".
...I know, wrong video to comment on...but I LOOOOOVVVVVEEEEEE that weird ass christmas music tape in Satisfactory. You guys did a great job on it. Its truly demented and wonderfully half baked and genuine. You messing up the harmonium, whether it was intentional or not, is pure musical genius. I laughed so hard first time! Loved the video, thanks for keeping those of us who don't watch the show, updated ^_^ a quick tip that you can do what yu want with, the music during the video was a little bit louder than I would have liked and at times made it difficult to focus on your voice. Otherwise it was lovely done
really got my hopes up for that few seconds there could be more to outer wilds coming, but probably for the best to leave the lukewarm sequels to the already bland triple A sector
the biggest problem with the show is that our votes only count for 10%. we are basically only voting for them to get the ads money of the website. besides that this year basically 80% of the nominated games had sony as publisher.
Feels like they should have categories for each game; graphics, sound design, artistic direction, etc, have a pool of the top 50 experts in the industry for each of those fields, have them vote on the games, then aggregate the scores. Having companies like Pride, npr, The Guardian, and other random news outlets doesn't seem like the right way to critique games effectively.
First one was decent but then the publishers saw the potential and the money ruined the process. The shill awards this year was a bit better than the last one but still featured a paid dlc as nominee for "game" of the year. A pure fan vote would be far too easy to sway, just look at how many people preorder overhyped titles like "the day before" or the growing habit of review bombing on steam based on what they've heard from an influencer rather than experience. It'd end up being a generic like cod, fortnite or something similar that could leverage an audience.
It's a bit of a conundrum for any awards show: if they're based on some objective, verified metric, like gross sales or number of concurrent players or whatever, then it doesn't really justify an announcement in a show, it's just a PowerPoint chart. So they need to be highly subjective to justify their own existence.
I googled Astrobot and I'd seen it on a twitch stream, it looked very solid. I laughed at the first Reddit result that it was a "slap in the face" and would set the industry back years. The hand wringing is just laughably sad. It's video games.
Without a quantifiable way of objectively measuring a games worth it will always go down to popularity and therefore marketing. Just like how the internet would vote for the game the most people have played, and same thing will happen to journalists. This is why something like Factorio: Space Age will never have a chance in hell of even being recognized in a show like this, regardless of how masterful it could be, as it is simply too niche to be popular enough to be recognized by enough people.
its barely an award, its just corpos patting eachothers backs. Im tired of it being taken seriously, and especially so when 90% of the vote is decided my journos, and the remaining 10% from the actual public vote. I sincerely feel like the steam awards are a MUCH MUCH better indicator of what us gamers actually want
I also do like to see the previews of the new games, and sure, the competition is always questionable, but every awards program ever will be questionable. I think for what they needed and what would help them continue to spark interest in gaming companies showcasing and contributing to their awards, they did okay.

Baldur's Gate 3 getting all that controversy for winning last year was definitely from a huge group of people that had never played it. It definitely deserved it though.

To not even get a nomination was a bit crazy to me. To be clear, I'm not mad or anything, I was just surprised. It does make me feel like the current process is causing some important games to be overlooked. If a game I would have considered to be my own game of the year doesn't even get a nod, it makes me a bit skeptical and wonder what else got missed.

It feels like "The Sony Awards". Shadow of the Erdtree isn't a standalone DLC though - doesn't standalone mean that you can play it independently without other software? For SotE you need the original Elden Ring to play it. Lovely video nontheless!
the 90/10 split is absolutely stupid it should be closer to 60/40 to correctly represent the PLAYERS voice and let them choose the actual game of the year
Meh... I usually prefer award ceremonies which use a jury rather than a popular vote, because I don't trust the audience. 😅 Popularity contests give awards to Nickelback. We don't want that.
@@fluffls True, 10% is a joke. Something like 25 to 35 % would be good. That would still be relatively save from "Hype" or "shitstorm" votes from communities but give a serious vote to the players.

That show is such a bs lol, couldnt watch a minute of it, bunch of clowns doing some rich guy stuff for themselves basically. Doesnt even reflect the real gamer ideas and choices.
Just take a look at the player's choice nominees we ended up with for TGA this year, 3 mobile gacha games, plus Elden Ring DLC (which is funny due to its supposed fan outrage) and Wukong which is neither here nor there. We don't need The Game Awards to be player choice, I would much prefer a wider range (including even more international) critics to be involved.
Astro Bot is definitely an achievement (on scale and fidelity)... but it also feels uninspired. Balatro had the most unique entry among the nominees, but it was an indie game.
I 100%'d Astro Bot and absolutely LOVED the game, but I was completely speechless when it won GOTY. My wife told me and I was like, "Really? Astro Bot?" and had to confirm for myself. Just didn't see that coming with the other great games in the list.

Loving it!
Hello
Balatro
Engagement: I heard that Astrobot is a really good game. 🤷♂ Seems fine to me.

I don't even watch or care about award nonsense. I play what I play. Fuck the herd mentality.
camera / focus / light -> on point (right eye could be a little lighter though)
And you are?
If Shadow of the Erdtree was $60-$70 and called Elden Ring 2 with no content changes there would have been 0 controversy. It's silly.
'Oscar bait' was not a thing before award shows, therefore I wonder if there will come games in the future that tries to achieve this niche.
I 100%'d Astro Bot and absolutely LOVED the game, but I was completely speechless when it won GOTY. My wife told me and I was like, "Really? Astro Bot?" and had to confirm for myself. Just didn't see that coming with the other great games in the list.
